Question: Is vitamin b1 deficiency a large contributing factor to a hangover? read in an internal medicine book that alcohol prevents absorption of vitamin b1 into the body. Since deficiency of vitamin b1 prevents the metabolism of carbohydrates, which are a source of energy for the body, I was wondering if the inability of the body to metabolize carbohydrates contributed significantly to the generalized weakness of a hung over person.
am also aware of the impact of fragmented sleep of a drinker, but am looking for a relative comparison between several contributing factors
Answer: Fifty years ago we were taught that alcoholics got thiamine deficiency because of poor diet. We also learned that the cause of a hangover was due to the fusel oils in the alcoholic beverage. Fusel oils are actually higher order alcohols with more than two carbon atoms. They play a role in the flavor profile of a beverage.
I have not updated that area of physiology in the past four or five decades.
Question: Vitamin B1 - how long does it take to work? I am going to start supplementing Vitamin b1 (Thiamin) to help with anxiety and worry and mild depression and negativity. It is said to help but this is somewhat unproven, so I guess I;ll just give it a go and see.
How much should I take? i was going to go for 300mg a day - reasonable?
How long will it be until I notice a difference if there is going to be one? The same day or does it take some weeks?
Many Thanks
Answer: Unfortunately, almost all of that answer would depend on your body. Most people notice the benefits of supplements in anywhere from a few days to a few weeks, though.
Basically, supplements give your body nutrition it's otherwise lacking, so the more deficient you are on a nutrient, the better it'll feel to take that nutrient... just like how water tastes and feels better the more dehydrated you are. The general rule of thumb is to give it a good 3-4 weeks before writing off a supplement just so you can feel the maximum benefit of it. Good luck and I hope I helped!

Question: What is vitamin B1(Thiamine) used for in horses? I want to calm my horse down and i am wondering if this would help. As well i was wondering if there were any known brands that work well.
Answer: I don't know about horses, but it is used in humans and other animals to prevent bug bites. It is better to give a multivitamin or B complex with it, it will work better. B vitamins are good for the nervous system and might help to calm the horse, depending on what the problem is. I have no idea what the dosage would be for a horse; and make sure it is in a form that is readily absorbed by a grass-eating animal. Vitamins in capsules should be readily absorbed by any digestive system.
For that matter, you could probably get the same results by adding nutritional yeast to the horse's food; lots of people use this for their B vitamins, and it should be fine for a horse. The horse might like it.

Answer: poor intake and absorption yes
Question: What type of bond does Vitamin B1 have (ionic, covalent, etc)? We need it for a project, the sooner the better. Please & thanks!
Answer: an individual molecule is joined by covalent bonds.
the intermolecular forces experienced by B1 are (in order of affect) hydrogen bonding and van der waals.
It wouldn't surprise me if the sulphur atom could covalently bond, but since i've never heard of di-thiamine im guessing that this doesnt happen.

Answer: Very good sources of vitamin B1 include asparagus, romaine lettuce, mushrooms, spinach, sunflower seeds, tuna, green peas, tomatoes, eggplant and Brussels sprouts.
Molasses is a thick, brown to deep black, honey-like substance made when cane or beet sugar is processed. It is enjoyed as a sweetener in many countries, and most particularly in England where it is called treacle.
Best of Luck
Question: Does drinking cause poor absorbtion of vitamin b1, thiamine?
Answer: Indeed it does and it also destroys some of your magnesium intake as well as a few other vitamins and minerals and other nutrients. This only applies to excessive drinking.
Drinking in moderation is quite OK but regular heavy drinking is bad for your health and brain and will speed up the ageing process and shorten your lifespan and that is only the tip of the iceberg.
