Question: What happens when Vitamin C is added to an iodine and starch solution? It's a grade 10 high school chemistry question :)
As you may already know, an iodine and starch solution is an aqueous solution with a dark violet/black color. But when you add vitamin C to the solution, what happens? Can you provide a lengthy explanation for me? Tomorrow, I'm doing an experiment which tests the levels of vitamin C in different substances, but all I need to know for now is what will happen.
Answer: Vitamin C. reacts with iodine:
C6H8O6 + I2 ==> C6H6O6 + 2H+ + 2 I-
So you can use titration with iodine to find out the concentration of vitamin C. Since the reaction ratio is 1:1, moles vitamin = moles I2 at the endpoint, so concentrations (M) x volumes are also equal. The reasoning is a bit like in acid-base titrations, which you might have met.
The suspended starch forms a dark blue loosely held complex (almost a solid state solution) with I2, so long as there is any, so it acts as an indicator.
Question: Do Vitamin C really work to prevent illnesses and strengthen body's immune system? I heard that consuming Vitamin C is pointless to maintain a healthy body, unless you are exposed to extreme conditions. Is it true? Then what are the other ways to prevent illnesses and strengthen body's immune system besides Vitamin C?
Answer: Taking extra vitamin C definitely boosts your immune system. You will get fewer colds and when you do they will be less severe.
Although you can easily get at least 50 mg of vitamin C from a normal diet, taking extra vitamin C is much better. 500 mg a day would be a useful amount. More vitamin C also helps to absorb more iron.
Garlic is another immune system booster.
Question: How long does vitamin C last in the body? If I take 500 mg or 1,000 mg of vitamin C(ascorbic acid), how long will this last in the body? I realize it is water-soluble so it doesn't last very long, but how long exactly before it gets used up or goes to the bladder? This question is about regular vitamin C pills and powders, not sustained release vitamin C tablets.
Answer: duno, our body requires daily doses of it, so maybe less than 24 hours???
Question: How much Vitamin C should I take when trying to fight a cold? Also,
Aside from what's in a typical multivitamin, are there any additional supplements that my body needs to appropriately process and utilize Vitamin C?
Answer: Anywhere from 1000mg to 3000mg! And something else that helps alot of AIRBORNE!! It's only 6 bucks! Try it!
Question: How do guinea pigs get vitamin C in the wild? I know that guinea pigs need vitamin C daily from their diet because they can't produce it or store it on their own, but I have read that their natural diet in the wild is just grasses. Where do wild guinea pigs get their vitamin C?
Answer: Most animals produce vitamin C in their cells from its component parts. This means that they do not need vitamin C in their diet, because they will produce it from the food they eat.
Guinea pigs, primates and humans do NOT produce vitamin C in their bodies, so they MUST get it from their diet. If they do not consume adequate amounts of vitamin C they will suffer from a deficiency called scurvy.
Signs of scurvy include lethargy, diarrhoea, weight loss, and internal skeletal-muscular haemorrhage.
Vitamin C is also a water-soluble vitamin, so it can not be stored in the body. These animals therefore need to get vit C in their diet every day.
Wild guinea pigs eat a variety of plant matter - and plants contain high levels of vitamin C.
If you want more detail consider this:
In the wild guinea pigs are grazers - they eat all the time. Their diet is low in calories, so they must eat a large quantity to get enough energy. It is easy to get enough vit C when you eat such a large amount of fresh food! Many pet guinea pigs are fed a complete diet, with very little fresh food. As a result you need to get all the requierd vit C in a much smaller quantity of food.

Question: What are good fruits that have lots of Vitamin C for guinea pigs? I don't like the Vitamin C water drops so I have to give my two guinea pigs vitamin c through fruits and vegetables. They always get romaine and carrots and strawberries, but they don't like red bell peppers and oranges. What other fruits are there that have lots of vitamin c and are safe for guinea pigs?
Answer: Hello,
If you visit this link it will tell you all the fruit and veg, and how much vitamin C it contains. Red peppers are the highest, like you said your guinea pig doesn't like them. Neither do mine! http://www.guinealynx.info/diet_order-c.html

Question: How much vitamin C should an adult with a cold take? Vitamin C doesn't reduce the onset or severity of colds, but it reduces the duration of them.
What's the max amount of Vitamin C I can take before it plateaus or becomes dangerous for me?
Answer: As much as you want really. Vitamin C is one of the least toxic vitamins out there. They've injected rats with the equivalent of 500,000 mg of vitamin C with no ill effects other than diarrhea. I take 5,000 mg everynight for it's anti-oxidant properties.
But it does increase the ability of your body to absorb iron, so don't get too crazy.
Question: How much Vitamin C should I intake to have a whitening effect on skin? I read somewhere that consuming Vitamin C whitens the skin. Question: What is Vitamin C? What is the vitamin that helps absorb calcium and whats a good multivitamin brand? is Vitamin C, Calcium??
What is that one vitamin called that helps you absorb the Calcium into your bones?
What is a good multivitamin that has lots of Calcium.. hopefully chewable and is kinda cheap? Like i could find it at Wal Mart?
Answer: I think you may be thinking of Vitamin D, not vitamin C.
Centrum usually has a wide variety of products that cater to age and nutrition goals. They have men's and women's only vitamins as well as general health supplements.
You may also want to invest in Caltrate if you feel you are not getting enough calcium through your diet and additional supplements.
Question: What is the difference between synthetic and natural vitamin c? Wondering about the bioavailability regarding vitamin c from natural or sythetic sources. I am specifically looking for studies or scientific proof of the negative effects of sythetic vitamins and specifically vitamin c.
Answer: Vitamins are made up of several different components enzymes, co-enzymes, and co-factors– that must work together to produce their intended biologic effects.Vitamins that are found naturally in whole foods come with all of their necessary components. The majority of vitamins that are sold in pharmacies, grocery stores, and vitamin shops are synthetic vitamins, which are only isolated portions of the vitamins that occur naturally in food.
Question: What veggies are good source of vitamin C for my guinea pigs? My female just underwent an operation. She's recovering now. But she would not eat her vitamin c tablets of drink vit c in the water. So what should i do? She loves vegetables. But which ones contain the most amount of vitamin c? Or other than veggies, what food contains high amounts of vitamin c? Thanks
Answer: Don't put vitamin C in her water it could put her off drinking and can allow bacteria to breed. If you are syringe feeding her, add some vitamin C to the feed, or mix some with water and syringe it to her. That way you will know ow much she is having.
Parsley is high in vitamin C (but also has oxalate, so don't overdo it as this can predispose to bladder stones). Chicory is also a good choice as it stimulates the appetite. Avoid fruit (especially citrus fruit) as there is too much sugar, and the acids can affect their mouths.
Question: How effective is Vitamin C and zinc in producing higher quality sperm? My husband was tested recently. His prostate, etc, is perfectly healthy, but his sperm count is very low and the few that he produces are very slow. The urologist suggested he take high doses of Vitamin C and zinc for three months and then get retested. We would like to know if these supplements actually do make a great difference? What is the prognosis in such a case? Will we be able to have children eventually?
Answer: Eat foods and/or whole food supplements that are naturally rich in folate, vitamin C, vitamin E, selenium, and zinc.
Folate, selenium, and zinc are particularly important to producing healthy sperm. Vitamins C and E are thought to protect sperm against damage by the environmental stressors listed in the next section.
Question: How lost does vitamin C last in your system? I'm experiencing the beginnings of a severe cold and I bought some vitamin C tablets to take. Does anyone know how long vitamin C lasts in your system, because I heard it wasn't very long.
Answer: Vitamin C is eliminated from your body every day as it is water soluble. The best strategy is to take vitamin C two or three times a day as that is far more effective than taking the total amount once a day. If you only take it once a day there is nothing left for later on towards the end of the day.
