Question: How do I find good alternative health care providers in the state of Maine? Who would you highly recommend for health care providers in the state of Maine? Professionals who study alternative medicine. Health care providers who are homeopathy, naturopathy, herbalist, and a wide variety of health care licensed professionals.

Question: How many people actually practice alternative health practices? I am interested in learning about health benefits from herbal medical therapy. Do you have any experience in healing through alternative medicines?
Thanks, but I am not talking about marijuana. I am talking about legitimate health resources.
Answer: To often folks think that when you are talking about alternative medicine, they think about a witch doctor or a Charmin. What is today considered alternative medicine is tomorrows general medicine. An example of this is aspirin, this was derived from the aspen trees by American Indians, ergo a witch doctor and now I can't think of what it must have been like before the use of it. Camille tea is used today for a number of different ailments and yet no one wants to call it by it's name. My son and daughter in-law are both medical doctors and they ask my wife what to do for their colicky, my wife's advise use some Camille tea, I should have pointed out that both my son and his wife are children's doctors. This is a great question so I think that the real answer is most folks do even when they don't know that they are using alternative medicine

Question: How will the new "health care reform" placed in the stimulus bill affect alternative medicine? The proposed health care reform will define which doctors are "meaningful users" of the system, and I was wondering if alternative health care providers (chiropractors, massage therapists, etc) will be considered "meaningful users".
Answer: The proposed "Health Care Reform" included in the stimulus is designed to do one thing: allow the government to decide who lives and who dies in order to "boost efficiency".
Question: What are some careers in alternative health care? I'm looking for ideas for different careers in the field of alternative health care. I'm not interested in hearing about acupuncture, chiropractic, or naturopathic physicion - I'm curious as to what else is out there. Anything related to alternative health care, possibly with nutrition, is of interest to me.
Answer: Well how about a nutritionist for starts, dietician, ocupational therapist, physio therapist, massage therapist. Do lots of research before you invest in some "school" that gives you a degree that is worth nothing. There is a lot of scam schools out there.

Answer: If the questions are about illegal drugs, you need to report them. Such questions are not allowed on the site. Unfortunately, since this is the case, the YA staff will not make a separate category for these questions, either, since they are NOT allowed. Perhaps if these types of questions were reported (as illegal) enough, the accounts of the people asking them would be suspended -- and this might slow them down a bit.
Question: What are some alternative health related volunteer positions other than volunteering at a hospital? I've been planning on volunteering at a local hospital during this summer as part of a bunch of stuff I want to do for medical school. However, it seems that everyone applied last month and now there are absolutely no positions available near me.
Does anyone know of some alternative volunteer work that would show that I am interested in pursuing a career in medicine?
Answer: you can volunteer at an in-patient hospice as a patient visitor. HOWEVER, since the focus of hospice care is helping the person to stay in their own home, you can volunteer to be a visitor to homebound folks. Hospices care for people from the moment of delivery (when it is known that a baby will not survive long after birth) up until 115 years old and everything in between.
Usually there is no hands-on care for volunteers but you can help with everything from reading out loud, conversation, helping with laundry (if YOU choose), companionship...this list is long. This will give you a good idea of how a terminal disease process affects someone physically, emotionally and spiritually, as well as their loved ones.
Please consider this. Good Luck to you.
Question: What alternative health options are there instead of knee replacements? It seems like there could be something; diet, something alternative to drugs to at least lessen the chance of the knee becoming even worse. I really don't want that surgery (or to get a "scooter" thing, which seem kind of like giving up....)
Answer: Check out MBT's! It's a shoe that helps decrease the stress on your knees and hips. It also tones up your muscle all the way up to your abs. And increases your posture. Also increases circulation to your legs.
I've had many people tell me that it's helped them walk again. Lots of nurses and other professionals that have to walk a lot wear them. Along with people who have had knee surgeries.
Believe me, just go to their website to find a store near you. Even just trying them on makes most people want to buy them.

Question: What's a good alternative to health insurance? I'm looking to offer a health insurance alternative to our employees. We own a small local pizza place and want to add a small incentive to keep our better employees but we simply can't offer health insurance. Any suggestions please?
Answer: Many of my foodservice clients offer a "mini-med" policy. It is an insurance policy with a limited outpatient services benefit, as well as Rx, but limits the out-of-pocket exposure in the event of a catastrophic illness or accident. It also includes coverage for the ER and walk-in clinics.
It is sold on a "voluntary" basis, which means that you don't have to contribute, but that you care enough to bring it to them. It is very inexpensive in CT. As an age-banded product, we see premiums under $100 for young single males, as well as females.
One such product is from Aetna or SRC. Check with a local agent in your area and ask them about this type of option, or check with your local restaurant association.
Question: Traditional and alternative health services for people suffering from stress? Where traditional health services are those that society believes to be effective and rely largely on medications and operations.
Whereas alternative health services are those that rely less on drugs and medical procedures.
Answer: I'm not sure if you are asking for opinions about whether one is better than the other or what the forms of these are. I'll give it my best shot.
There are medications one can take for stress. Sometimes that is the only way people will let themselves be treated. I have read in some of the medical literature that people get antsy and upset when their doctor suggests that maybe they need to seek out the services of a psychiatrist or therapist. They'll take the pills over talk therapy.
Therapy has been shown to be just as helpful as medication in dealing with stress and depression. Sometimes people need the extra help from medication, but when used in conjunction with therapy, people seem to do better long-term.
Therapy, esp. for stress, involves a person learning what things cause stress, determining how the body reacts, and learning ways to not get so stressed. Since that doesn't involve medication, that might be alternative health, but the two are happening more in tandem all the time.
As for alternative medicine, even herbs and remedies that people take are medicines of some kind. Food is a medicine. Acupuncture can be great for stress. Yoga is very effective as well. Physical exercise is a good remedy for stress. Alternative medicine also requires a person to relearn ways to live...how to eat and drink, what to eat and drink, examining one's life to see what needs to change.
I think it can be very difficult to choose one approach over the other. They both have their place and can be very helpful when applied judiciously.
I hope this makes sense.
Question: Is there an alternative health option to cure a sore throat other than antibiotics? My doctor keeps prescribing antibiotic after antibiotic and somehow they don't work, plus they cannot be healthy to be on repeated doses like that, right?
A swab was done and it was bacterial, positive for strep, but three different antibiotics have failed to work.
Answer: Considering you have had repeated rounds of antibiotics you should begin taking a probiotic, the antibiotics have also killed off much of the good bacteria in your intestines. Probiotics will help re-establish that. Oil of oregano is a good natural antibiotic. Vitamin C is also good for building the immune system.Gargle with warm salt water or a mouthwash that contains tea tree oil. I would think that yeast would also be abundant at this point, Olive leaf would help with that. Stay away from sugar, caffeine, nicotine and alcohol while you are recovering from this. Undistilled apple cider vinegar and local honey (from within 10 miles of where you live) mixed in water and drank a couple times a day. Undistilled vinegar has natural probiotics and honey has antibiotic properties and helps boost immune system...local is also good for desensitizing to local pollens. Fresh fruits and veggies, stay away from highly processed foods, choose lean meats, stay away from fast food. You may want to consider a sinus rinse,(with water and sea salt, not table salt as it contains iodine and may be very irritatiing) many times what ever the invading bacteria is can reside in nasal passages also. Results may not be as immediate as with prescription drugs but once your body has strengthened itself (a couple of weeks) you should be able to knock this out. Keep taking the oil of oregano and oil leaf for at least 4 weeks to get rid of as much yeast overgrowth as possible.
