Brewer's Yeast
Question: What, if anything, is the difference between brewer's yeast and nutritional yeast? I've heard of the health benefits of brewer's yeast and my doctor even suggested it in capsule form to help with lactation. I cannot find it in flake or capsule form. The closest thing I've found is "nutritional yeast" in flake form.
Answer: They are very similar except that Nutritional yeast is low in Chromium. Nutritional yeast has a mild flavor. You can order it online.
Question: Would Nutritional Yeast have the same effect as Brewer's Yeast for natural flea prevention? I use Revolution on my dog but, I am also looking into natural things... such as yeast. I have usually read that Brewer's Yeast has been used with some success for flea prevention. But would Nutritional Yeast have the same effect?
Answer: I don't think yeast would have any effect on fleas. I think you should save your money and just stick with something that is science based
Question: How do I convert tablets of brewer's yeast to cup measurements? The recipe calls for 1/2 a cup of yeast, but I'm assuming it means a different type. Each tablet is about 1 gram. How much should I use?
Answer: If you have a recipe for something like bread or muffins that calls for yeast, you should NOT substitute brewer's yeast in it's place. You should make sure that you have the type of yeast for which it calls. Active dry yeast is, from what I've found, the most common. Brewer's yeast isn't an active yeast while dry yeast and baker's yeast are. I'd suggest that before you substitute one yeast for another, you read the informative article on various types of yeast at: http://www.foodsubs.com/LeavenYeast.html
*(10 grams, in general = 0.35273961955802 ounces, 1 cup = 8 ounces)
Question: What temperatures can brewer's yeast survive at? I brew my own beer, but can not keep my house cold enough for the recommended yeast fermentation levels. At what temperatures do I risk killing the yeast? My house typically sits at around 80 degrees but can get up to ninety degrees Fahrenheit. Should the yeast be able to survive at these temperatures?
Answer: Bakers yeast will die at 120 for sure. Brewers yeast temps are more about taste than dying. Fermenting speeds ie. temps affect taste big-time. The Germans ferment cold and drink their beer cold. The British ferment their beer room temp and drink it room temp. As long as you are getting a proper fermentation it's only taste you will be dealing with.
Do you have access to a basement? That would help.
Question: What is the shelf life of brewer's yeast? The brand is Lewis Labs Brewer's Yeast.
Answer: My husband is in LOVE with the stuff. We bought a lot in bulk a while back and just keep it in the fridge. It seems to last indefinitely as long as you don't let it get moist. You certainly can't smell it to see if it's gone bad, right??!!! PEEEUUUUUUUUWWWWWWEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Question: How brewer's yeast can induce pyrexia? how does brewer's yeast induce fever in the test animal by injecting it subceutaenously. Ca you please include the source of your answer....
Answer: Immune system detects intrusion and acts accordingly.
Question: What's the difference between brewer's yeast and the one you use for bread? As far as i know it's the same species, right? are they different strains? What does each one do?
Answer: Bakers' yeast is selected for low alcohol production and high carbon dioxide production to make the bread rise. Brewers' yeasts are selected for the reverse. In addition, they affect the taste of the beer, resulting in subtle tastes of different fruits or spices.
Question: Do any of you use brewer's yeast and garlic powder as a flea and tick preventative? Does it work? How do you give it to them and how much? Also someone told me about a product called badgers(?) that you rub on your dog to keep ticks off. What is this?
only people who have actually used brewer's yeast and garlic need to answer this. I don't care what your opinions on it are if you've never even tried it.
Answer: wow, that first guy is a total prick
Question: can you use baker's yeast instead of brewer's yeast to brew beer? i'm allergic to brewer's yeast but not baker's yeast so i'm looking for an alternative
thanks for the answer's guys ! especially john!
Answer: You're not allergic to brewer's yeast, it's something else in the beer. If you find that you have a reaction to beer, it's most likely sulfites or hops oils.
Brewer's yeast is the same thing as baking yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) but is just a different strain that behaves a little differently. It's these slight changes that leads a brewer to choose one yeast over another. There are also dozens of varieties of brewing yeasts out there (all of them strains of s. cerevisiae).
So, to answer your question: Yes you can brew beer with baker's yeast. It will work, but the followup to that is that it won't work *as well* as a strain of yeast developed for brewing.
Question: My dog is allergic to Brewer's Yeast in vitamin pills. Do any of you recommend a daily vitamin for your dogs? Must be Yeast-Free and should be in tablet form (not granules of capsules)?
Answer: I use Berte's Naturals (B-Naturals) Daily Blend - they have a website. I've also used Nature's Logic. Both are powder and easy to add to the food bowl.
Question: Brewer's Yeast with Garlic for dogs - is it safe? I was in Walmart and saw a Pro-Pet's Brewer's Yeast with Garlic that supposedly promotes healthy skin. I thought that dogs were allergic to garlic. Am I wrong? Is it safe for dogs?
Answer: Both onions and garlic contain thiosulphate, which isn't an allergen, but actually a TOXIN to dogs. Of course, some dogs are more susceptible than others, and usually just a bit on rare occasion won't cause harm. But feeding a dog anything with garlic on a regular basis? Major no-no.
Fish oil and/or flax seed is a better option for skin and coat.
General rule... don't buy any dog food/treats at Walmart. You're just begging for something to go wrong if you do.
EDIT to the person below:
Proof that breeders are idiots, surely.
Yes, many things in high doses are toxic. However, if something's toxic at all, why feed it to your dog at all? I've heard a few cases of dogs dying from eating onions, and far more of dogs developing severe renal/kidney damage at a young age (when, coincidentally, fed garlic daily). In fact, an online search will turn up a few cases if you actually read through.
People eat toxic things in small amounts. However, that's our personal decision. To impose something toxic on a dog because "it's not a lot" is just ignorant and cruel.
Question: what are brewer's yeast, and wheat germ?and what can i substitute if i dont have them? i wanna make some doggy treats but i saw that they need brewer's yeast and wheat germ i dun have nay idea what they are.
Answer: Brewer's Yeast is usually used for fermenting beer hence the name, but it is high in B vitamins, and aides digestion. It also helps repel fleas, which may be one of the reasons it is an ingredient. Wheat germ is the heart of the wheat kernel, it contains vitamin E, folate (folic acid), phosphorus, thiamin, zinc and magnesium. All of which are good for your animal. Don't substitute these ingredients, they are usually available at the grocery store. If you can't find brewer's yeast, check with a GNC store as they usually have it. Good Luck!
Question: Is Brewer's Yeast the same as rising yeast for baking?
Answer: They're actually the same type of yeast but prepared differently. When you purchase active dry yeast you are purchasing a product created by a manufacturer to foam and rise quickly and be able to last longer than a fresh block of yeast. If your question is about what to use for baking, you have to use "active dry yeast" to get the desired effect in baked goods, because it is a man-made product specially manufactured for just that purpose. Hope that helps you!
Question: What do you recommend as a very good brewer's yeast for home use?
Answer: I think that yeast is the most important ingredient in making a good alcoholic product. Alcohol is of course the byproduct of the yeast that feeds on the sugars in beer. If you use a cheap yeast or cheap malt, you won't get the same quality. I recommend using White Labs yeast products. They come in a liquid vile. The scientists that clone this product have the highest standards for production in the homebrewing industry. You'll have to purchase the yeast from a homebrew store that has refridgeration. White Labs yeasts have to be stored at a temperature under 50 degrees farenhight. I've had hundreds of great experiences using White Labs yeast, and several experiences using dry yeast that are just so - so.
Question: Can I ferment milk with brewer's yeast? Just by putting the yeast into the milk carton for a day or so. Will this make it produce lactic acid and ferment?
Answer: In theory, yes. I think that kumis (koumis) is made from fermented camel's or mare's milk. The strain of yeast used is probably different, though.
Question: what is the difference between brewer's yeast vs. baking yeast?
Answer: Brewer's yeast is a different strain than baker's yeast, and meant, as the name implies, for brewing beer. Yes, you can use baker's yeast to make beer, but it won't have quite the expected flavor. And you could make bread with brewer's yeast, but in my experience - yes, I have tried it - the results are less than desireable.
