Question: Why did the poor egg get chosen as the symbol for cholesterol health? The egg has gotten a bad rap and it seems it's still carrying it. When people talk about high cholesterol (see today's Y! homepage) they always show photos of eggs. Why not show something truly bad for you like a friend steak or french fries?
Answer: cuz fired steak and french fries are NOT necessarily bad for you. you just think that...what if they were fried in palm oil..palm oil has 0% trans fats
eggs are delicious and not a target of cholesterol for everybody just ppl with high chol. and older people
Question: I have a 4 year-old brother whose cholesterol is 201! What do you health experts think his diet should be like I'm very concerned about the health of my brother. High cholesterol is common in my family. But I have no idea how to change his eating habits. I was never really aware of how important eating habits and controlling your cholesterol was. But when your 4 year old brother is more than 110 points over his normal cholesterol, it's time to get worried! If you know anything about health and/or cholesterol, PLEASE help and post your ideas.
Answer: WOW.
Ask your doctor!!
But what I CAN TELL YOU is read the nutrution facts on everything that you buy, if it has cholosterol in it don't but it.
Try buying healthy, fresh foods.
Lay off all the junk with tans of trans fat, saturated fat and cholosterol - especially eggs and lots of types of meats - they have a lot of cholosterol!
Just watch everything you buy and make sure your controlling what goes in an dout of his mouth!
Good Luck
Question: How effective are aspirin/cholesterol drugs on cardiovascular health? Can they really significantly reduce the risk of dying from a heart attack or stroke and greatly enhance your health/life?
Do they have any hidden dangers we should know about?
Answer: Aspirin does reduce the risk of heart attacks at people with certain risk factors. It's primary side effect is increased bleeding and gastric upset.
The vast majority of people take it without problems.
Cholesterol drugs "statins" also have been shown to reduce mortality in patients with CAD and to prevent events in certain groups.
The most common side effect (muscle aches) are actually pretty uncommon.
You'll find people on here that think statins are "the devils brew". Far from it. For every 'horror story', there are 100s of 1000s that have no problems. Like any med, they are not for everyone.
Question: Give me a good food item or recipe that flax meal can be added to for cholesterol health.? My daughter is 7 and has HEREDITARY high cholesterol, she was on Lipitor but complained of ankle joint pain so we stopped. Now they say use ground flax meal. But put it in what?

Question: can having a very low cholesterol be bad for your health? could there be health problems for people with low cholesterol?
and how how can i know when my blood pressure is starting to get too high, would it be around 200 total cholesterol?
Answer: The "normal" total cholesterol range is 150-200. What do you consider low? A lot depends on your age and health history, especially cardiac history. A young--under 50--person who has a history of heart disease in his family would be encouraged to keep his cholesterol around the 150 level. An older person--over 65--but with no heart problems would be considered fine with a cholesterol level up to around 250.
Nowadays, there is more interest in the total cholesterol to good (HDL) cholesterol ratio than in just the total cholesterol number. You want a ratio below 4.5.
As for blood pressure, you don't KNOW when it's getting too high. That why it's called the silent killer, although some people do get headaches. It's important to monitor it regularly.
Question: Does dealcoholized red wine lower cholesterol and have other health benefits as alcoholized red wine? Does dealcoholized red wine have same health benefits as regular red wine?
Answer: I would think so. you can drink purple (concord) grape juice and get similar health benefits.
Question: What high cholesterol could do to my health? I already have high blood pressure and I take meds for that ? I don't eat red meat, I don't exercise regularly, just walks, I do eat carbs like pasta, rice, and sweets. I'm 52 years old, and have some extra pounds, could be all of these things together? The bad cholesterol was 150!!!
Answer: You can help yourself by...
1.) discontinue eating sweets.. not because of the cholesterol but because it is NOT good for your health. If you must eat sweets... eat fruits LOCAL to your city and or state.
2.) exercise. you MUST exercise... MUST!
3.) cut back on carbs... eat more green leafy veggies, and brown rice
150 bad cholesterol is horribly high but easy to fix.

Question: what health risks are associated with low cholesterol ? My total cholesterol is 109
HDL is 30
LDL is 54
Triglicerydes 123
Is it normal ?
What problems I might have with this low cholesterol ?
Answer: Apparently your total cholesterol is supposed to be above 160.
The information on this suggests that below 160 could cause some health problems but the reports on this do not seem to be very conclusive.
Most vegans would undoubtedly be well below 160 and a lot of vegans are very healthy.
A web search for "low cholesterol" + "health hazards" will give you further information.
Question: is organic food health for high cholesterol? my son is 2 and already has high cholesterol and i was see if organcic is better for him to eat.
Answer: I'm not sure how much of a difference organic food would make. But a vegetarian diet may be highly beneficial.
"You should eat more foods from plants which don’t contain cholesterol such as fruits, vegetables, grains, and avoid foods that contain too much cholesterol like meat, egg yolks and fat milk."
I understand your child may be too young for drugs. Check the sources below for natural ways to lower cholesterol.
Question: I am 47, and have recently been told I have High Triglyceride Cholesterol. Would a Health Store Detox help? Mostly looking for "success stories"; I really want to know if they work for intial diet changes (I plan on staying on a healthy diet and exercise program, so expect the Detox to be a one-time thing) or if they're mostly a waste of money and I should just wait out the results of a good lifestyle change.
Answer: It's doubtful they will help. I say just start eating healthy, avoiding overly processed foods. It's best to watch for high fiber, low sodium and low sugar levels on nutrition labels if you must use processed foods.
Getting exercise, at least 30 minutes a day, will also help to bring this down.
Good luck!

Question: How dangerous is Cholesterol for our health ?
Answer: Hi,
HIGH CHOLESTEROL
When you have too much cholesterol, it can be dangerous to your health. When cholesterol levels are high, cholesterol is deposited on the walls of arteries and forms a hard substance called plaque. Over time, plaque causes the arteries to become narrower, decreasing blood flow and causing a condition called atherosclerosis (pronounced: ah-thuh-ro-skluh-ro-sis), or hardening of the arteries.
When atherosclerosis affects the coronary arteries (the blood vessels that supply the muscles of the heart), the condition is called coronary artery disease, which puts a person at risk for having a heart attack. When atherosclerosis affects the blood vessels that supply the brain, the condition is called cerebral vascular disease, which puts a person at risk of having a stroke. Atherosclerosis may also block blood flow to other vital organs, including the kidneys and intestines. This is why it's so important to start paying attention to cholesterol levels as a teen - you can delay or prevent serious health problems in the future.
LOW CHOLESTEROL
Having a very low cholesterol could mean that you are not eating enough food which inturn causes disease. It is more safer to have low cholesterol but its best to get a doctors opinion incase theres any underlying problems. A simple blood test will determin this
Question: I'm 45. Am I 'allowed' to request a free health check (blood pressure cholesterol etc) at my GP practice? I'm not sure if this kind of prevention/promotion type activity is offered to people on the NHS. I feel vaguely guilty about misusing resources, although I am keen to know what my basic health status is.
Answer: there is a trend towards preventative medicine these days and if u go for something eg a flu jab then they usually test your BP. if u have any reason to be worried about BP or cholesterol ie family history then yr doctor will do the tests im sure. best is to go and ask and say u r concerned about keeping fit and healthy and have never had these things tested. they can only say no. the problem with BP it is a silent killer there are no symptoms....till u have a stroke or heart attack. your doctor will also advise u on such issues as weight management, smoking cessation and exercise if applicable.
Question: How can health eating help improve your cholesterol level?
Answer: Changing Your Eating Habits
To lower your blood cholesterol through diet, eat fewer foods high in saturated fat, total fat, and cholesterol.
If you do not have a cholesterol problem that needs a doctor's attention, the recommended eating pattern is:
Less than 10 percent of the day's total calories from saturated fat
30 percent or less of the day's total calories from fat
Less than 300 milligrams of dietary cholesterol per day
If you have high blood cholesterol, your doctor will first prescribe a diet similar to the one above, but with special emphasis on limiting calories from saturated fat to 8-10 percent of the day's calories. If you follow this "Step I" eating pattern for about 3 months and your blood cholesterol does not drop enough, you may need to cut back still more on saturated fat and cholesterol and follow the "Step II" eating pattern. This calls for:
Less than 7 percent of the day's total calories from saturated fat
30 percent or less of the day's total calories from fat
Less than 200 milligrams of dietary cholesterol per day
If you have coronary heart disease, you should follow the Step II diet right from the start. It is a good idea to get help from a registered dietitian or other qualified nutritionist when starting the Step II diet.
Question: Another question on health for teens. Can you have high cholesterol and still be overweight? I don't understand. Can you have high cholesterol and be overweight at the same time? and what if you're not at all blubbery? What can you do to bring the weight down other than the body fat? All the times I tried to loose weight, I see the fat burn away but not the weight. It's so confusing.:(
Answer: Well, yes. Being overweight goes with high cholesterol.
But not for teens--most teenagers do not have high cholesterol.
You are confusing ME. What are you talking about "What can you do to bring the weight down other than the body fat? All the times I tried to loose weight, I see the fat burn away but not the weight. It's so confusing."
Losing weight IS losing fat. Fat IS the weight. Good grief.
