Cordyceps Mushroom
Question: Has anyone tried cordyceps (mushrooms) for energy. does it work?
Answer: Cordyceps is in the class of herbs called adaptogens. These are herbs that help the body adapt to stress. It's not the first herb I recommend for stress and, In fact, I don't use this often. It is used for extreme depletion and chronic illness, also it has been used in kidney diseases. Some other uses are infertility in men and women and male impotence. I believe it's also been used by athletes to increase stamina. If I recall it was used by Chinese Olympic athletes years ago. There are other herbs that may be better for you such as eleuthero, Rhodiola and Schizandra berries.
For cordyceps, It's best to use a reputable company. This next bit is not to freak you out but to help you with finding good quality cordyceps. If you don't know already cordyceps is when the fruiting body of a fungus (above ground mushroom) takes over the body of a dead insect and grows out of it (usually the head)...an ant, moth, caterpillar, etc. the mushroom spores get into the insect, the insect dies and the fungus grows out of it. So getting high quality cordyceps is important.

Question: Anyone familiar with Cordyceps? Cordyceps is a type of mushroom that they make a supplement out of it. It supposedly helps with various things such as energy and circulation problems, among others. Has anyone used this or know of someone using this? Did it help at all? Thank you for your time!
Answer: Cordyceps is a genus of ascomycete fungi that includes about 300 species. The species that parasitizes the vegetable caterpillar — Cordyceps sinensis is the most famous of these, having long been considered a precious ingredient in Chinese traditional medicines.
All Cordyceps species are parasitic, mainly on insects and other arthropods (they are thus entomopathogenic fungi); a few are parasitic on other fungi like the subterranean, truffle-like Elaphomyces. The mycelium invades and eventually replaces the host tissue, while the elongated fruiting body (stroma) may be cylindrical, branched, or of complex shape. The stroma bears many small, flask-shaped perithecia that contain the asci. These in turn contain the thread-like ascospores, which usually break into fragments and are presumably infective.
The genus has a worldwide distribution and most species have been described from Asia (notably China, Japan, Korea and Thailand). The genus has many anamorphs (asexual states), of which Beauveria (possibly including Beauveria bassiana), Metarhizium, and Isaria) are the better known, since these have been used in biological control of insect pests. Cordyceps species are particularly abundant and diverse in humid temperate and tropical forests.
Some Cordyceps species are sources of biochemicals with interesting biological and pharmacological properties, like cordycepin; the anamorph of Cordyceps subsessilis (Tolypocladium inflatum) was the source of ciclosporin — a drug helpful in human organ transplants, as it suppresses the immune system (Immunosuppressive drug).
Question: Where to get cheap reishi or similar mushrooms? Hi, does anyone know where I can buy Reishi, Maitake or Cordyceps in the UK? I am looking for the cheapest possible, either in mushroom form, or the extract.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Answer: Find an ethnic Chinese market. Look for whole Reishi mushrooms. Maitake is likely to be expensive everywhere it is sold. Cordyceps is also relatively expensive.
One mushroom that you should look for that is sold as a food is the Shiitake. You can buy big bags of dried shiitake mushrooms in Asian markets.
Question: Why? My throat swelled up after drinking Odwalla "Serious eNergy" Juice Drink (Tropical Energy) with Mushrooms I noticed the back of my throat closing up after I drank some Odwalla "Serious eNergy" that has "Yerba Mate", "Green Tea Extract", and "Guarana Seed Extracts".
** Found out it contains mushrooms?? (reishi and cordyceps mycelium, mushroom derivatives) 250 milligrams of reishi and 750 milligrams of cordyceps.
14 hours later.......(slightly better?) Woke up with congested throat. Throat feels less closed/swollen, but still there. Used flashlight to look in mouth and back of my throat looks a bit raw with Red, tiny, bumpy dots. This area is more white-ish than red. Does feel raw, but not painfull.
( When it was only 4 hours after initial prblem, i was able to eat and drink as normal).
Not sure about eating ability now, only having coffee at this point. Gonna see the Doctor today.
Found some MAOIinfo - not sure if it matters:
An August 11, 2005, United States patent application cites yerba mate extract as a monoamine oxidase inhibitor; the maximal inhibition observed in vitro was 40–50%.
miss-spekked - meant "MAOI info"
miss-spelled "miss-spelled" - i must be tripping out
Everyone:Thanks for your answers!

*** Appears that odwalla did Not research this first (or just accepted the risks!)- I hope most people would agree w/ me that This drink should NOT be on the market! Or, it should be labeled "Contains MAOI".

Question: cordycep mushrooms in high altitude training? I plan to take cordyceps in my normal dosage (1.5 grams) in higher altitude (9,000ft) and perform high intensity cardio training. I typically exercise at around 4,500 feet altitude. are there any safety concerns? DO YOU THINK THIS WILL BE WORTH WHILE TO IMPROVE STAMINA?
Answer: I've never heard of that stuff, and messing with mushrooms especially when you are starting high altitude training sounds kinda dangerous. I'm not a doctor though, and I suggest you ask one.
Question: Concerns about the brand of supplements and their products...? Is Solaray a trustworthy and reliable company? I want tot ry some of their supplements like the herbs. I wanted to know if anyone has tried this brand before. I am interested in cordyceps they sell, but I dunno if it is contaminated or it is real, not fake ones.
