Dietary Guidance
Question: Current dietary guidance for most humans to reduce risk of cardiovascular disease is:? A)Eat less saturated fat and more fiber
B)Eat more fruits, vegetables, grains, and legumes
C)Don’t eat any red meat, milk, or eggs
D)A and B only
E)A, B, and C
Answer: D.
Saturated fat has a direct link to an increased risk of Cardiovascular disease. Fruits, veggies, grains, etc are packed with vitamins and minerals that will help reduce the risk. The reason it's not E is because you can have all of those things, but you want them in moderation.
Question: What kind of dietary restrictions are applicable to Christians? Does Christianity offer any guidance on choosing proper foods for yourself or your family?
Answer: everything in moderation.
except during Lent, then we (Catholics) have to abstain from meat - although fish is fine. It's funny, because the rule was put in place for the laiety to sacrifice something, but most of my friends and I use it as an excuse to have sushi on Fridays.
Personally, I think it's just a way to keep fishermen in business, since most of the Apostles were fishermen.
Question: Dietary Advice? I'm looking to do either a low fat diet or a calorie controlled one but I've never dieted so i've got no idea how much fat etc I'm meant to have as a daily intake or how many calories etc. I'm 5 foot 7 and weigh 10stone 5lbs. can anyone give me guidance or suggest a web page for me to get further advice? thanks
Answer: I think that you are a healthy weight for your hight... but if you do want to lose a few pounds (and if anything i would say only a few) i would say go for a low gi diet...
We have a diet in Australia that is having amazing results it is called CSIRO diet and has worked for so many people... so have a look for that book where you are
this is the website if you want to have a look at it

Question: A Religious Dietary Law Confirmed/Approved by Medical Science? http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2008/07/12/are-there-deadly-superbugs-in-your-pork.aspx?source=nl
Judaism and Islam both prohibit consuming the 'flesh of swine' or pig meat.
How could these Ancients/Religions know this knowledge, which we now have proven scientifically?
A mere Coincedance, or is it something more, like Divine Guidance?
Answer: Yes, of course it is divine guidance. Allah (swt) tells us many times in the Quran that we should not eat pork:
http://www.islamicity.com/Quransearch/action.lasso.asp?-database=Quran&-Table=tblMasterTranslit&-Response=Sreply1.asp&-Error=SReply1.asp&-MaxRecords=20&-token=English||falsefalsefalsetruetruefalse&-op=cn&English=swine&-sortorder=Ascend&-sortfield=CV&-Search
Islam and science go hand in hand. There is nothing in science that has been absolutely proven that contradicts anything in the Quran.
Actually both Judiasm and Christianity also prohibit the consumption of pork. The Torah is the first 5 books of the Bible's Old Testiment, and the prohibition against eating pork is there, in the book of Leviticus.
----
"And the swine, though he divide the hoof, and be cloven footed, yet he cheweth not the cud; he is unclean to you".
"Of their flesh shall ye not eat, and their carcass shall ye not touch, they are unclean to you." [Leviticus 11:7-8]
--edit--
I don't know why the link came out looking so strange, but it seems if you click on the blue link, it does take you to the page it's supposed to.
--edit--
I also found this:
Pork is also prohibited in the Bible in the book of Deuteronomy:
"And the swine, because it divideth the hoof, yet cheweth not the cud, it is unclean unto you. Ye shall not eat of their flesh, nor touch their dead carcass."
[Deuteronomy 14:8]
A similar prohibition is repeated in the Bible in the book of Isaiah chapter 65 verse 2-5.

uh...i dont really think its the food problem..im 5'6 120lbs..im healthy in that area, its just ive been too distracted and 'depressed' to eat i guess... i dont think a berry would truly be the solution to this here...but thanks...
Answer: It's natural to feel self-conscious, nervous, or shy in front of others at times. Anyone can have a racing heart, sweaty palms, or fluttering stomach when trying out for chorus, asking someone on a first date, or giving a class presentation.
Most people manage to get through these moments when they need to. But for some, the anxiety that goes with feeling shy or self-conscious can be extreme. It can seem so unbearable that they might feel too nervous to give answers in class, be unable to make eye contact with people in the hallway, or avoid chatting with others at the lunch table.
When people feel so self-conscious and anxious that it prevents them from speaking up or socializing most of the time, it's probably more than shyness. It may be an anxiety condition called social phobia.Dealing with social phobia takes patience, courage to face fears and try new things, and the willingness to practise. It takes a commitment to go forward rather than back away when feeling shy.
Little by little, someone who decides to deal with extreme shyness can learn to be more comfortable. Each small step forward helps build enough confidence to take the next small step. As shyness and fears begin to melt, confidence and positive feelings build. Pretty soon, the person is thinking less about what might feel uncomfortable and more about what might be fun.Take care as always!
Question: Should the US Government and the FDA be allowed to regulate Alternative Medicines? I say No. And if you feel the same you should state your thoughts by going to: http://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/oc/dockets/comments/COMMENTSMain.CFM?EC_DOCUMENT_ID=1451&SUBTYP=CONTINUE&CID=&AGENCY=FDA
And also contact your local Senate: www.congress.org
Please read below: A re-print from HSI:
Dear Reader,
This might be the most important e-Alert I'll ever send you.
Your healthcare freedom is constantly under attack. And as we've just discovered, that freedom has suddenly come under fire as never before.
--------------------------------------------
Always something
--------------------------------------------
Most HSI members won't be surprised to learn that the FDA has launched a plan to impose new regulations on alternative healthcare - regulations that are far more severe than existing regs.
Attempts like this aren't new, of course. Over the years we've diligently monitored such actions so that we can keep you informed through the e-Alert, the HSI Members Alert, and our web site.
Just last month I told you about a new senate bill called the Safe Drug Compounding Act that would limit the freedom of women to choose a safe alternative to synthetic hormone replacement therapy. So far, there's no further news about the progress of that completely unnecessary act, but now a much larger threat looms.
This past December, the FDA quietly put a document on its web site titled "Draft Guidance for Industry on Complementary and Alternative Medicine Products and Their Regulation by the Food and Drug Administration." This document is open to public comments until April 30, 2007 - just a few days from now.
After that, FDA officials will evaluate the comments and decide if they dare proceed with a regulation that might actually make it a crime to take vitamin C for a cold without a prescription.
Sound extreme? Absolutely! This is the most extreme attempt to control the sale and use of dietary supplements I've ever seen.
--------------------------------------------
The cards are stacked
--------------------------------------------
The FDA document is 14 pages long, but here's what it boils down to: If you use an herbal or dietary supplement to stay healthy or to help prevent an ailment, that's fine. But if any supplement is used to treat a symptom, then it's a medicine and will be regulated by the FDA, just like any prescription drug.
And there's a qualifying statement to that second part: The supplement will be exempted if it is "generally recognized, among experts qualified by scientific training and experience to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of drugs, as safe and effective for use under the conditions prescribed, recommended, or suggested in the labeling."
In other words, the freedom to use a supplement to treat a condition will be at the discretion of FDA experts. And given the track record of FDA experts, this is really bad news.
With this spacious latitude, there's no telling just how far the FDA might go to restrict access to supplements. For instance, they could take a widely used supplement off the market if the label states a benefit; such as using lutein to reduce the damage from age-related macular degeneration, or using chondroitin and glucosamine to reduce joint pain, or using probiotics to address digestive problems - the list goes on and on.
As HSI Panelist Jon Barron points out on his web site (jonbarron.org), under the proposed FDA guidelines even bottled water might be considered a drug if used to alleviate severe dehydration, which is an emergency medical condition.
Answer: I say yes, here is why - if the FDA approves various herbal remedies, etc then doctors can then legally prescribe them if needed for one thing. Another thing is that Herbs ARE DRUGS. For example, the primary ingredient in most prescription drugs is an herb of some kind. Like Viagra is basically nothing more than an herb in a pill packaging. The problem with the FDA regulating this is that if it isn't approved they can take it off the shelves for a while. I wonder if this is a conspiracy by the drug companies so that only the drug companies can sell herbs. I don't know. But FDA approval will give these items the same testing as our drugs and that testing is needed. And it gives one standard by which to measure by. If you get Enzymes from your pharmacy they use one measurement system to measure how many units it is and if you go to your health food store they use another measurement system,a nd nobody knows how many of one = how many of the other one.
Right now you have doctors who make you buy a $1200 medicine when they could tell you to try the $3 herb, but the doctor can't tell you to take the $3 herb without FDA approval legally, so if these are approved your doctor can now tell you to take the $3 herb and they can do it legally. It might be good for everyone, but then it might not be either.
I really dont' know.
I think it's been frustrating for me that the herbs haven't had FDA regulation.
But that doesn't necessarily make it good
Question: What would you do about someone who has mild pica and urophagia? If you found out that someone you loved (not family; like a friend or perhaps a lover) had mild pica and urophagia, how would you react? How would you handle it? Should how I handle it depend on the severity?
My initial reaction is that something is seriously wrong with this person, and needs to be fixed, and my logic says to shove them out of my life because of their differences, but they're someone I love very deeply and I don't feel that reaction is at all appropriate or helpful in any way. The ew factor is huge for me, but this person has accepted my oddities in stride and I want to be able to accept theirs in stride... But I really don't want to accept this in stride.
So, I have lots of inner conflict. And I want to be supportive and helpful.
My worries mostly stem from the fact that they seem to have no inclination to stop. I don't want to be their inclination, either. This person isn't bothered by it physically or emotionally, and that concerns me too. In fact, it's such a regular part of their day that they didn't even really realize it was weird until they found out it was considered a mental disorder. I think I'm worried most by their complacency.
After doing some research, I've found that the actions of this person don't really fall into the 'typical' cases of urophagia and pica because it's not religious or a fetish, and it doesn't act as a makeshift dietary supplement.. It's just.. a habit and such a normal part of their day. After talking about it, we think it may have something to do with their compulsions (as most children of alcoholics have compulsions).
I just. Feel very conflicted and need some KIND words of guidance. Rude answers will be reported.
For reference:

Thanks Elle. For clarification:
Teenager
Stems from childhood - such a normal part of their life because they've done it since four years old
Does want treatment but the situational circumstances are so odd that they aren't sure how to deal with it on their own and can't go to their parents for help because..
Parents are and have always been serious alcoholics and drug heads and we wonder if it's one of their compulsions.
Answer: These disorders usually happen in childhood or in those with intellectual disabilities.
I would agree it something is wrong and that it should be fixed. It's very unhealthy. If this is happening in an adult, otherwise normal individual, then something is very wrong and it NEEDS to be treated. It's also treatable.
There is probably also something more going on, probably some psychopathology that the primary problem and is leading to these behaviors.
You need to encourage this person get evaluated and seek treatment. It's more than gross, it's very unhealthy.
Question: It is our responsibility as a society to look after children by both punishing parents for their child’s...? It is our responsibility as a society to look after children by both punishing parents for their child’s dietary intake and preventing the specific targeting of children in sales... This is the thesis statement of my paper in English Comp. II. I am already conducting my own research by using online catalogs provided by my school, so please don't take this posting as me wanting you to do the work for me. What I'm looking for is guidance. Although this is my thesis statement I'm actually very neutral and I'm looking to be pushed in one direction or the other by opinions from you guys, and supporting material if you're able to find something I haven't yet cast my gaze on. I look forward to any responses I get and I will look at any, and everything with an open mind. Thank you!
I like both of the first two inputs. I am a person who likes less government control. What is a solution to our kids getting fatter that involves no government laws/control? You guys are amazing, I love this site.
Melrose, awesome stance. I agree. It does take a village to raise a child. So, what I'm thinking is by school's not allowing vending machines... That's not a law. So it's not the government stepping in, it's part of society helping raise a kid.
I think I may take off the part about punishing parents because the only way possible for that is laws, and I'm against more laws. Unless someone has a solution.
Answer: I will start off by saying that while I am open-minded, I am also very judgmental and critical of people, particularly those who have no motivation to better themselves and their world. I think it is a parent's responsibility to make sure that they AND their children understand nutrition and exercise. Kids can't be expected to eat healthy foods when they do nothing but watch tv, see all the advertisements for unhealthy foods, and then their parents eat nothing but McDonald's. In today's society, many parents have not been taught by their parents that they have to be the role model for their children if they want them to turn out well.
There are far too many of these parents, and if they are not intelligent enough to be parents, then society should step in and take action. Some may say that it is not anyone else's business, but I disagree. If you live in my world, and make impressions on people, who may then go on to make impressions on me and the people in my own little world, then yes, you are my business. That saying "it takes a village to raise a child" makes sense, and we don't heed it today. An individual is not expected to know everything, but many people collectively do know a lot.
I am tired of seeing fat little children being coddled by their enormous parents who would rather give them food than to give their kids the proper amount of attention they need if they want them to become functional, healthy adults. (I was at Red Lobster last week for my 10 year-old half-sister's birthday, and watched in horror as my stepmom let my already overweight sister shovel down 4 biscuits, 8 jumbo shrimp, crab legs, salad and 2 glasses of pop. Meanwhile, my stepmom has lost about a hundred pounds recently and does nothing but work, work out, look for new boyfriends and play online!) Studies are showing that many of these (fat) parents don't even think their kids are overweight! That's probably because they are in denial over their own weight, and are bombarded by seeing so many other hefty kids every day. I may be overweight now, which unfortunately is partially due to hereditary thyroid problems and other hormonal imbalances that start at puberty in my family, but I was a string bean of a kid, and my parents always emphasized playing over watching tv, and healthy foods over convenient junk food.
p.s. that's a good idea about the vending machines. But if schools do have them, they should be stocked with healthier stuff - granola bars, Sun Chips, natural juices and teas, etc.
Question: How to get fit as quickly as possible.? Over the past year I have gone from 280lbs to 207, but there is still some weight left to lose. It was a gradual change in my eating habits and an increase in physical activity which got me this far, but I feel like I've hit a wall and need a little guidance. I eat small portions at least 4 times a day, though I shoot for five. I eat low carb. high protein foods and I run 5 miles or more every day and do various strength and toning weight and resistance routines.
Is there a weight loss formula which will enhance my routine and get me that extra bit of flab off my gut? Or a dietary supplement that isn't a scam? I've heard Hydroxycut is helpful, but I am reluctant to give it a chance. Can any other health nuts help me get the body I've always wanted? I feel like I'm nearly there.
Answer: The MOST important thing is to eat naturally..without medicines, chemicals, "starving" your self etc.
first, it would be best for you to eat as healthy as possible..this will also help you considerably to lose weight gradually and naturally..
eat fresh fruits, vegetables, drink plenty of WATER..avoid all cokes, caffeines, smoking, alchohol etc. as these also add weight as well as they contain chemicals which disturb your natural bio rythmns as well as brain chemistry. try not to eat too much meat, and the meat you should eat should be "lean meat" such as steamed chicken and rice, or steamed fish with rice..and vegetables,, this should be your staple diet rice and vegetables with fruits..AVOID "JUNK FOOD" and "Fast Food" as this type of food is very unhealthy, lacking in vitamins really and has plenty of fattening molecules which make one gain weight and is very bad for overall health.
if you snack,, try fruits with yogurt or fruit yogurt and nuts.. nuts are very healthy for your body .and contain proteins.
go for walks every evening or morning or whenever you get time each day for 1 hour or 2 hours..make this somewhere you enjoy walking even if you have to drive a bit to there..and make this a daily routine..you will enjoy it once you get into it ..and it makes you feel great after..just walking for 1 hour or 2 hours.
if you do this..every day for one month ..you should lose around 10 pounds (.714 stone) per month until you get to your natural healthy weight.. look up on the internet for an idea of what your weight for your height should be ..and when you get to this weight,,your body will look very nice and you will feel very good.
10 pounds (.714 stone ) each month in 3 months you should lose 30 pounds (2 stones, 2 pounds)..for sure...but no junk food and dont drink alcohol or smoke, dont eat junk..just healthy food with vitamins and walking 1 hour or 2 hours every day..and drink plenty of water..this is guaranteed way to lose weight naturally and for good, if you stick to this, which you should,,as it makes you feel so much more positive due to the vitamins and lack of chemicals making you feel depressed...
btw, forgot to mention,,just in case you dont know how to really make healthy meals..buy a "food steamer" at your local deparment store..they are very cheap and work very well..as well as buy a "rice cooker" which is also very cheap..eating rice is a great way to get your necessary carbs "healthy carbs" to lose weight and has lots of natural energy inside. you can buy asian rice at most large supermarkets or if you have a local oriental market..they sale quality asian rice.. thai or indian rice is good "jasmine rice".. buy corn or canola oil to sprinkle on vegetables or rice before steaming to add to taste as well as you can buy several nice spices like "cumin" or "Curry powders", etc.just sprinkle on the vegetables before steaming to give nice taste.
drink "Green Tea" as this is very healthy and helps burn extra fat faster...you can buy quality green tea at most oriental shops or large supermarkets as well
