Question: How difficult is it for someone who speaks Spanish fluently to learn Portuguese? Spanish is my co-primary language (along with English) and I speak it fluently. How difficult would it be for me to learn Portuguese?
Writing and grammar shouldn't be a problem, but what about **speaking**? Are there some phenomes in Portuguese which Spanish and English both lack? I've been told that Portuguese is about as difficult as French, would you agree?
Answer: The old Portuguese joke about Spaniards is that they must be stupid because we understand every word they say and they never understand a word of our reply. The basic problem is that Portuguese speakers, especially those in Portugal, close unstressed vowels, making "segundo" into "sigundu" and even slurring them so that "sigundu" turns into "sgund." In the carioca dialect of Brazil (which is the one used on most television, because Rede Globo's main studios are in Rio de Janeiro) any T or D before an I is palatalised, turning Boa noite (standard Brazilian boa noiti) into Boa noichi (in Lisbon this would be bo' noit), and Latinoamericano into Lachinuamericanu.
Some words you may find hard to recognise because Portuguese drops intervocal L and N, whence Ceu for heaven, Lua for moon, and Ter (hold) and Vir (come) are very irregular verbs. The Spanish diphthongs IE and UE do not exist, so Tem for Tiene, Morte for Muerte.
Vocabulary differences include many misleading cognates, e.g. Exquisito means odd, queer, unusual in a bad sense. If the fish is exquisito, it means it is off. Borracha means india rubber (a drunken woman is bêbada), so a borracheria is not a tavern but a shop that sells or repairs automobile tires. There are also differences of vocabulary between Portugal and Brazil: rapariga (girl) implies someone of easy virtue in Brazil where it is replaced by moça (which implies someone of easy virtue in Portugal).
As in Latin, the past tense is also used as a present perfect: Vim, vi, venci is either "I came, I saw, I conquered" or "I have come, I have seen, and I have won". And instead of "yes," it is more usual to repeat the verb: Does this bus go to the airport? Vai. Will you take this woman...? Tomarei. Are you there? Estou. And two (dois) has a feminine form, duas.
Also like Latin, Portuguese is reluctant to waste words, so "I had two of them but cannot find them" becomes Tinha dois mais não acho.
Meu conselho seria que Vocè leia todos os livros, revistas e jornais possíveis em portruguês para dominar a língua escrita antes de tentar aprender a falar. Boa sorte! (My advise would be that you read all the books, magazines and newspapers in portuguese you can before you try to learn to speak it.
Question: How difficult is it to fly helicopters for the US Coast Guard/become a rescue swimmer? If you are a motivated person who is fit, will this be very difficult to attain?
Also, are there any other positions in search and rescue that aren't so difficult to become?
Answer: 1. To be a helicopter pilot, you first have to be an officer. This requires a college degree and completion of OCS. Following that, you can apply for flight school. It's competitive, but so are a lot of things.
2. To be a rescue swimmer (AST), you have to enlist. To qualify for Rescue Swimmer School, you have to be in great physical shape, and have strong ASVAB line scores. Even then, the wait to attend Rescue Swimmer school is almost always over a year, usually closer to two - and that's once fully qualified to attend. It's competitive as well.
3. Yes, there are other positions in SAR that are not AS competitive as rescue swimmer or pilot. First, let me say that to get in the Coast Guard at all right now, it's pretty competitive. That said, the Operations Specialist (OS) rate - a SAR Controller, working SAR cases from inside a command center - is one of the more available rates in the Coast Guard. Were you to be qualified to enlist, chances are you could likely get OS training on a guaranteed basis right after boot camp. The boatswain's mate rate is the most SAR intensive rating in the Coast Guard. In terms of how hard that is to get, somewhere more than OS and well less than AST.
Bottom line, figure out what you want and go for it. Even if it's competitive, the best qualified candidates will get selected.
Question: How difficult is it to change the drain fitting and control knob on a bathtub? I'm re-tiling my bath/shower. Since the walls have already been ripped out I thought it might be a good time to replace the fittings in the bathroom. I really like the oiled brass color in bath fittings. It would not be too difficult to replace the knobs, downspout and showerhead with the brass color that I like. The problem is that the drain for the tub and the knob that opens and closes the drain are silver. I would have to rip out more wall to access these and I don't know how difficult they are to replace. Is there a way to color them brass?? Or should I rip out the wall and go for it? Or should I just stick with silver?
Answer: You don't need to rip out anything if you have the kind of drain closure that has a spring assembly and striker rod. Check out: http://www.dummies.com/WileyCDA/DummiesArticle/id-3011.html
Question: Difficult to get into Fantasmic during the holidays? Is the Fantasmic or Candlelight Dinner Package worth it? How difficult is it to get into Fantasmic during the holidays? Also wondering if it is worth it to do the dinner package for either Fantasmic or the Candlight Processional. Thanks!
Which restaurants can you eat at for the Candlelight Dinner Package?
Answer: Fantasmic! - I don't personally believe so. It will allow you to sit sooner, but the reserved section for the package is off to the right and it's not that great of a view. It's been said that there really are no bad seats to F! (although if you're between the screens, it is kinda bad), but all the way off to the side isn't that great. I'd stick to just trying to get there early enough to be near the center. I've been to performances where the 3rd row center had been empty until 20 minutes before the performance. The thing is people consume more space than they really need, so you just need to find it. CMs may start directing to you to particular sections, but once you're down in the seating areas, you'll be free to roam around to try to find something better.
Plus there's often additional performances during busier seasons. During christmas week, there should even be 3 performances nightly. the second (and later) performances are always far less busy. So only consider the FDP if you (1) are on the dining plan and were going to eat at Mama Melrose, Hollywood & Vine or Brown Derby anyway or (2) you need to go to the first showing. You'll still be advised to show up at least half an hour prior to the show with the package.
as far as the candlelight processional, it's a bit different. because of the number of restaurants that participate in it, you'd be insane not to get to the package, especially if you're on the dining plan since it's all 1 TS credit anyway.
Waits will be pretty intense for it. I went in the beginning of December and the package line started more than 45 minutes prior to the show. by the time they started seating guests, the line had stretched as far as France. everyone got seats however and they did continue to fill up space with the standby line, but if you want an up close seat, it's imperative to do the package and show up at least half an hour before the show.
Question: How difficult and expensive would it be to rule a country? Firstly, how difficult and expensive would it be to start my own country on my own bought land. Secondly what about taking over a small but fairly developed country such as Cuba.
Answer: It wouldn't be easy; it wouldn't be cheap, and it WOULD depend on what KIND of country you wanted to "set up..." -Whether it was a Democracy, Monarchy, Dictatorship, -whatever. And as for "taking over a Country" & making it "your own", -the problem with THAT tends to be you end up spending alot of your time & $$$ cleaning up the MESS that the former Govenment left behind... So be careful what you ask for when it comes to starting a new Nation...-It could come back to rule YOU! :)
Question: How difficult is it to replace a motherboard with one of the same kind? I bought a computer on ebay with a defective motherboard. How difficult would it be for my to take the old one out and put the new one in?
Answer: It's not really hard, just remember to keep the old one until you get the new one up and running because you may need it to refer to ( jumpers etc. ) if something doesn't go right the first time. Take some pictures of the old one before you do anything to it, then maybe a few during the process so you can refer back to them as well as to where connectors go and the like.
Question: How difficult is it to become a heart surgeon? I'm interested in in becoming a heart surgeon but a little bit afraid of persuing it. I'm worried I'll fail. How difficult is it? Were you scared too when becoming a heart surgeon? How easy is it to find a job? I hope someone can help me thanks.
Answer: After med school it takes about 5+ years of a residency and then often a fellowship (so 15 years or so after you graduate from college). "(easiness in )Finding a job" is not something that happens in the realm of the medical professional at that level--all are employed. No one comes out from all that training & is unable to find a position.
Question: How difficult is it to get married in Rio de Janeiro or Mexico? We are planning to get married in April. How difficult is it to get someone to marry us in Rio or Mexico. Can anyone explain to local laws and customs?
Answer: Regarding the blood tests, I don't think a judge gives a damn if you're pregnant. Mexico may be a pretty conservative country, but it's socially pretty acceptable for people to have sex before getting married (at least in the cities).
They do need blood tests for STD's (which I don't think is a bad idea personally; people lie all the time they are virgins). They still check your blood for syphillis even though that disease is now rare. The witnesses don't have to be blood relatives either. They can be close friends of yours and don't have to be mexicans either. You will need death certificates of your parents if they're no longer alive.
Question: How difficult is to find a jon in UK either as a social worker or a teacher? Hi there!
I have just moved to London as I am attending a MA in Education.
Few years back I graduated in Education in Italy and I had several experience as a teacher of Italian to foreigners and a social worker.
I would like to do the same here but it looks more complicated as there are some qualifications you need to have in order to do that.
My question is: how difficult it is to find a job in such areas without these qualifications and how can I get them?
Thanks a lot!
Answer: Good for you ! Without qualifications (right ones) being a teacher or Social Worker is impossible,I am afraid. When you have completed your MA,you could apply to do a PGCE,which will be one year.Alternatively do the CELTA course/exam and teach English in a Language School. To be a Social Worker, you would have to do their course after the MA.I am unsure how long that would be,but not less than one year, even with an MA,possibly more.
Question: How difficult is learning to play tenor quints? I already know how to read the music for them, and I have a percussion instructor and friend willing to help me learn them. But I'd like to know from people who already play it or teach it how difficult it is to learn.
Answer: I came to it already playing snare, and found learning them easy.
Question: How difficult is it to learn Tagalog for a native English speaker? I am half Filipino and want to begin studying Tagalog. Just curious how difficult it may be. I speak a little a Spanish and Portuguese so I have some experince studying other languages, but those are similar to English. Any other advise would be appreciated.
Answer: Learning any language depends on the person learning it.
If you keep an open mind, are willing to learn, are not embarrassed to pronounce new words incorrectly, and practice gradually everyday (preferably with native speakers), then you can become fluent in no time. This goes for any language.
One of the key elements to learning a new language is to learn things you can and will actually use in everyday life. "Where's the bathroom?" is a phrase you will actually use if you go to the Philippines. Learning a phrase like, "The map to the city is very old" is practically useless.

Question: How difficult is it to tear apart a washing machine to remove the tub? I don't want to fix one, I want to remove the tub out of it to use for a different project. Is this very difficult? How many steps would it take to do this? I want to look into it before I start looking for a free broken washer to go pick up somewhere
Answer: If you are handy and have tools , I would say 5 on a 1 to 10.
Question: How difficult is it to learn how to change gears on a motorcycle? I've driven standard transmission cars for 32 years. I also ride a 50cc scooter for commuting, but would like to upgrade to a "proper-sized" motorcycle. So, I'm wondering how difficult it is to learn how to drive a manual transmission motorcycle. Or should I consider a larger, automatic scooter (400 - 500 cc range). Thanks.
Answer: You will find that the shifting on a cycle is far more forgiving than a standard shift on a car. Everything is so much smaller that it won't magnify any mistakes as much.
Still I wouldn't mind a automatic on a cycle myself, just one thing less to do.
A few cycles are now equipped with automatic transmissions as well as larger scooters.
Do as you will and test drive a few and make up your mind from what you like. DON'T let the difficulty of shifting a cycle sway your decision as it is very easy to do.
I taught my X how to ride a cycle and shift in a matter of minuets and she couldn't even drive a car, much less shift.
Being as you will probably be in a far different way of riding let me offer you these points.
1.- Ride in the left tire track of the cars, closest to the center lane (left side in the US). Never ride in the center of your lane. Oil from the cars and trucks collect there and get absorbed into your tires making them slippery for braking and leaning into a turn. It is close impossible to stop if it starts to rain.
By being in the left lane (US) a car passing you has to go into the other lane to pass. Some drivers will just go into the other lane partially if you ride in the right track coming way to close to you and leaving you nowhere to go. By being in the left track you have a whole lane to move over into if need be.
2.- RAIN, you can't stop Worth a tinkers dam on wet pavement. The tread pattern on newer bike tires aren't made for rain as well, as you have no weight to press down through the water and hydroplaning is a big problem.
3. Ride as though every other vehicle on the road is out to get you. Some way, somehow that guy is going to try to kill you, so be ready. This has saved my life more than once
Question: How difficult is a career in investment banking? What kind of math is involved? How difficult is the job in general? As an MBA graduate, will you be prepared to enter the field of investment banking?
Answer: Investment banking is a highly competitive field. The job tends to require a fairly high skill set but the difficulty really depends on the position, being the head of an investment bank is a high stress position that is extremely difficult, hence the high wages they earn, in contrast working on the buy/sell side of things can be substantially easier.
An MBA will open paths for you to get into large firms but Experience is what really matters in this field, its a long path to the top.
in terms of math you can probably get away with a strong understanding of algebra, unless you work for a firm that employs complex formulas and computer buying and selling, and even then it is unlikely you would need more than algebra.
