Question: What's the approximate weight of 6 dried apricots? I'm doing a project for nutrition class. I need help figuring out how many ounces 6 dried apricots weigh (no seeds). Thanks!
Oh, if it helps, these are the apricots I'm looking at: http://shop.safeway.com/dnet/RichProductInformation.aspx?promo_window=1&bpn=184740157
Answer: You gave a broken link. Are you using 6 whole apricots, or (more likely) 6 half apricots.
I live in Santa Clara County in California and am familiar with apricots, dried apricots, and the drying process. I would estimate one fresh apricot weighs between 2 to 3 ounces. To dry it, you cut it in half and remove the pit. Sun dry during the day, and sulfur it at night. After the liquid has been removed, it should weigh around 1/2 to 1/3 of fresh weight. So figuring the average weight (less pit) of a whole 'cot is about 2 1/4 ounce and each half will lose weight during drying, each half probably weighs around 5/8 to 3/4 of an ounce.
Question: 5 a day fruits and veggies. What about dried apricots? So dried apricots, on the package it says there are 5 dried apricots in a serving and that has 90 calories. Is this one serving of fruit that I can count toward the 5 per day? Or is each apricot a serving toward 5 a day?
Answer: Sure, you can count the dried fruit. For sure. Dried fruit is a concentrated form of the nutrients in the whole fruit. Very portable, too.
The whole serving is composed of five apricots. A single apricot is 1/5 of a serving.
So five servings of apricots per day would be 25 apricots in a day. Probably not a good idea to get so much Vitamin A to the exclusion of other nutritions. A balance is important.
Also, drink plenty of water with dried fruit, so you don't get constipated.
Hope that helps.

Question: how many calories, and what are the cons of dried apricots? Hello

If there are other measurements, what are they? ( one half means one half of dry apricot? please explain)
What are the cons of dried apricot?
Latly i start liking driped apricots so i eat 5-10 a day is it good? is it bad?
I also noticed my bowl movment increased.
to about twice a day, and it gives ALOOOTT of gases.
Is it normal?
Thank you very much!
.
Answer: One dried apricot has approx. 20 calories if it weighs about 8 grams.
It has no saturated fat or sodium, It does have about 3% of your daily potassium needs about 100mg
It has about 5 grams or carbohydrate and a little less than 1g of Dietary fiber and about 3grams of sugar and about 400mg of protein. It gives about 2%of your daily needs for vitamin A and about 0.5%of your vitamin C and about 0.5% of your daily need for Calcium and about 1% of your daily need for Iron.
All this in one little dried apricot.
The Standard Food Guide says you require 8-10 servings of fruit and vegetables daily.
Every variety of Apricot and how it is prepared and its weight will cause these above figures to differ.
Fiber is good for most people but some people with IBS (irritable bowel syndrome and other bowel problems) may have problems with too much fiber. It can increase bloating and gas and sometimes cause pain and diarrhea.
If you have diabetes you should probably stay away from dried fruits.
If you are young and you exercise and are lean and healthy is it okay to eat a handful of these delicious apricots a day.
Question: How to make dried Apricots? We have apricot fruits from our garden. Pl.suggest how to make Dried Apricots? Also advise if any preservatives to be used. Thanks
Answer: i slice mine 1/4 inch thick sprinkle with a little sugar put them in my beef jerky machine. dehydrater,it take mine 7 hours to finish.put them in ziplock last for months.good luck, got mine at k mart. for 20 bucks.
Question: Why didn't my dried apricots freeze? I tried boiling some dried apricots until soft, pureeing them (for my baby), then putting them into ice cube trays but they didn't freeze!
Why not?
I pureed them with the water I boiled them in so there was plenty of liquid.
Answer: If there are any impurities, water will freeze at a lower temperature. Since dried apricots have a high concentration of sugar, (well, so do apricots) even the water may not dilute them enough to be able to freeze at your freezer's temperature.
Why did you do that, though? Since they're dry, they'll stay for quite a long time anyway.
Question: are dried apricots bad for someone trying to lose weight? Brand= Sunsweet.
The box says 6 dried apricots equals 100 calories but I read somewhere online that they're bad if you're trying to lose weight.
Answer: The only problem is that they are high in sugar. Fruits aren't necissarily bad for you, but if it's that or going after a box of candies, you're much better off with dried apricots. Sugars tend to be the key when it comes to losing weight, but that doesn't mean you should cut them out, just make sure that you are getting them from more natural sources like fruits.
Question: Why do I get gas when I eat dried apricots? everytime I eat some dried apricots I get very gasy. why is that?
Answer: You could be sensitive to an ingredient commonly used in dried fruits, called sulfites. It's actually a chemical and they use it as a preservitive and to preserve the color. The FDA has approved it's use in foods though, so small amounts are not harmful, but you may be one of the few who are sensitive to it. You can try looking at your grocery store for all natural dried apricots without the use of sulfites.
Question: Can dried apricots cause upset stomach? I love dried fruit but a few days ago I ate too much dried fruit, mostly dried apricots. My stomach hasn't been right since then, gassy etc. Can eating too many dried apricots cause this?
Answer: A BIG YES. Dried apricots are FULL Of Fiber, the limit is 6, sometimes I eat 10 to get through a bout of Constipation. BUT yes, they are VERY Gassy. Eat the suggested serving size on the bag unless you happy to be very constipated.
Question: Why are some dried apricots dark orange as opposed to ones that are more yellow ? Are the dark orange one's dried for longer or do they have more preservatives added ?
Both types have sulpher dioxide. I usually like eating the darker ones, because they are chewier, but have noticed they also contain s/d.
Answer: They are more ripe when processed.
