Flax Seed
Question: Flax seed? My mom has high triglycerides and is a diabetic so is flax seed good for her to use? and what is it used for and how does it help the body? Also can anyone use it?
Answer: Flax seed has multiple health benefits for people with a variety of different symptoms. I, personally, grind it up in my coffee grinder each morning to add to my breakfast smoothie to help keep me "regular"... ;)
HOWEVER -- in your mom's case, she could benefit from the use of flax to help stabilize blood-sugar levels. Other proven benefits include: promotion of heart health by reducing cholesterol, blood pressure and plaque formation in arteries; natural diarrhetic/fiber substitute; and anti-cancer lignans.
Question: How much flax seed should one consume daily to help reduce colesterol? I would like to add flax seed to my healthful eating plan, but am unsure of how much i should limit myself to in a day. I have been told that if you have too much, it may cause diarreah. On the other hand, I want to make sure i'm getting enough to make an actual difference. My ultimate goal is to lower my high colesterol because I've heard it is a healthier alternative to perscription meds. I've been able to find plenty of good information online about the benefits of flax seed in general, but nowhere can i find the amount recomended for daily intake. Can anyone help? Thanks!
Answer: Flax seed is an excellent source of soluble fiber, the fiber that helps reduce cholesterol. The AHA recommends 25-30 grams of fiber daily. 2/3 cup of flax seed contains around 28 grams of fiber. It also has lots of other really good components such as vitamins, minerals and unsaturated fatty acids.
There are lots of other good high soluble fiber sources, beans being a good example.
Question: What are the properties of flax seed that make them an excellent laxative? For this purpose it is typically suggested that a couple of tablespoons of flax seed be taken with a generous portion of water. However, I find that if the seed are included in a meal it will accomplish the same. For instance, if one is consuming a lot of starch or cheese, which normally slow ejection, flax seed will prevent this.
Are there deleterious aspects in the practice? What characteristics of the seed produce this effect?
0909: The issues here are complex. In our day it's easy to nail down the perfect diet:
Eating light is the priority. This will be a regimen of water-laden foods - raw fruits and vegs, cooking only such items as require it for consumption.
Fruit should be eaten alone. Beverages with meals are taboo, though the traditional 8 - 10 glasses of water are in order - best between meals, like a snack.
Vegs well provide necessary protein - particularly avocado, the best source across the board.
Problem is: this becomes boring and invites contrast. Choosing what to introduce and when - purely for pleasure - is the challenge. Other protein sources, and starches we crave from habit. Adding dairy, potatoes, etc. calls for an increase of natural fibre.
This is best done up-front, not later. Since fruit must be eaten alone, prunes are limited in this regard. Flax seed are the answer.
But LIGHT is always our top consideration. Stop eating before sufficiency.
Answer: Many most laxatives work by making the colon collect water. The saline laxatives in particular. I have a lot of heartburn, and i sometimes use baking soda in water. If I accidentally take too much, I am on the potty for the next two hours.
This is almost certainly how it works, especially if the directions say to take it with a glass of water. Flax seed would contain Something that causes the water collection, not sure, but also two other ingredients that will help with clogged plumbing. All seeds contain oil. In fact I was thinking about asking you if it was flax seed oil or the seeds, but further reading clarified. The other thing is Fiber, which is more preventive than remedial. But knowing how fiber works, I can see why eating it With the cheese might help keep the cheese from causing so much binding.
Old fashioned plant based remedies are always preferable if negative side effects are a concern, but the Most important thing is this: Is it doing what you want it to? If so, I am SURE it is safe in moderation. I love Cheese too! but too much of it can be quite harmful. High fat, High cholesterol, in addition to the problem of post consumption disposal.which can contribute to colon health issues. Variety is the key to diet.
Question: How do you eat/prepare flax seed? I am taking flax seed oil because of its health benefits and would like to start adding whole flax seed to my diet. How do you eat it? Any suggestions or recipes?
Answer: The seeds have lignans (great for cancer prevention) and a fiber that is great for the colon. I use milled flaxseed (I am a nutritionist) and there is no need for the oil since it is in the seeds. You can grind it up or buy it milled. Othewise it will pass thru you without being digested.
It has a pleasant taste so you add it to baked items, soups, brown rice or any kind of food that it mixes well with. I drink a greens drink and add it to that. Some greens drinks have some in them. See site below for greens drinks to learn about them.

Question: Is there a particular type of flax seed when making an herbal neck wrap? The only type of flax seed I can find in my area is one on a grocery shelf called Hodgson Milled all natural flax. Would this work? Thanks.
Answer: You don't want milled flax, since it is already ground up and will not work well for you. Also, it will go bad quickly.
You want whole flax seed. You may have to look for it at a health food store, or anywhere you can get whole grains. You can also use wheat, oats, rye, corn or basically any grain. Experiment to see which ones work the best for you.

Question: How much flax seed to feed to chickens? I have 27 laying hens and one rooster that have been raised more or less organically. Though it is mid-December they have continued to lay for us with the help of a heat lamp. We would like to start supplementing their layer feed with flax seed to increase the omega 3s in the eggs. How many pounds per fifty pounds of layer do we need to feed? What is the accurate amount to feed per chicken? Any input would be appreciated.
Answer: Try offering them free access to flax seed. They will know how much to eat. Maybe a bird feed mix such as True Value bird seed that has flax in it a plus will be multiple seeds added to their diet.
Question: What other supplements can I take besides kelp and flax seed to benefit my body? I'm kind of a health freak, very healthy diet, strict workout plan, and some supplements mainly flax seed and kelp. Besides these, what other natural supplements could I take to benefit/detoxify my body long term?
Answer: Highly nutritious foods you should consider: sprouts, chlorella, spirulina, paprika, turnip greens, mustard greens, kale, garlic, brewers yeast, raw almonds, ground flax seeds & chia seeds.
For optimal health, I advocate a low carb way of eating. As long as you have <9grams carbs per hour,
you will maintain insulin control, which will balance hormones & allow your body to function properly. You shouldn't gain weight, no matter the calories, because insulin (the ONLY fat storage hormone) isn't activated.
I personally believe in using fat as fuel instead of carbohydrates. Fat is totally benign in the absence of insulin. There aren't enough calories in vegetables & fruits to fuel the body, if you get enough calories from carbs to fuel the body, then you maintain an almost constant high insulin level with roller coaster blood glucose levels. I recommend fats from butter, coconut, olives, nuts, fish & meats, chia seeds & flax seeds.
When you restrict higher carb, lower nutrition foods, it becomes much easier to greatly increase vegetables in your diet. Change your mindset just adapt it to low carb -
replace bread with lettuce
replace pasta with cabbage
replace rice with cauliflower
replace potatoes with brocolli
Carbohydrates trigger insulin (the fat storage hormone). Protein triggers the fat burning hormone glucagon.
High carb levels trigger insulin which unbalance other hormones, promote inflammation, weight gain, hunger. Controlling insulin levels will balance out other hormones and allow sex hormones (testosterone in men) & human growth hormone (HGH) to be produced naturally so lean muscle will be gained even without exercise.

Raw nuts are living and full of the energy of life and should be capable of building a tree. Roasted nuts are dead & they may still provide some nutrients, but none can compare to the nutrients and enzymes from a live food.
Unfortunately, raw does not necessarily mean living.
Commercially sold almonds are now required to be pasteurized turning a live food into a dead one. You can not sprout an almond that has been irradiated. I buy my almonds direct from growers off ebay. I get 20# for less than $3# including shipping.

Question: A recipe that showcases flax seed? I'm looking for a recipe that uses flax seed as the "star" ingredient. Something without much preparation, and not just adding it to other dishes. Anything you want to share, please?
Answer: Flaxseed is used a lot of time in baking, such as in cookies or breads. Check out the link below for some recipes. There's a pretty simple one for pancakes at the top of the list.
Question: Is it BAD to use flax seed that's been kept in tupperware OUT of the fridge/freezer for months? I've been using ground flax seed for months, and thought I could just keep it in a sealed container in the pantry. Just found out I'm supposed to keep it in the fridge/freezer. Have I lost all health benefits/is it detrimental to take at this point? I have a lot left and I don't want to throw it out.
Answer: throw it out..
Question: What is the best way to include flax seed in my diet? Also, is too much flax seed dangerous?
Answer: I use it when OI bread tofu. If you bread chicken or shrimp or something, you can use it then, too.
I put it in the blender with water. When I bread my tofu, I dip the tofu in flour, then the flax seed mixture, then bread crumbs. I cook in a bit of oil then bake with spaghetti saucer and parmesan cheese for a fantastic tofu parmesan.

Answer: Flax seed pills will maintain your cardiovascular system and lower your cholesterol.. to an extent.. Use a fat burner (like Hydroxycut or Xenadrine) to burn fat with exersice.. (I tried both and both worked for me)..
STAY AWAY from lean cuisine and all other packed/frozen/processed food! Calling it "lean cuisine" doesn't mean it's good, it's just a label, a marketing game..
Eat healthy raw foods, like fruits and vegetables!
Get some 98% fat free groundbeef and make your own burgers.. or get fat free chicken breast (really good).. Eat water packed, preservative free tuna and chicken (very quick to make and easy to digest)..
Drink low fat milk, eat whole grain wheat bread..
Exersice regularly (when ever u can).. take multivitamins, and educate yourself on healthy eating habits and active lifestyle..
Question: Is it possible that taking flax seed would lower blood sugar readings in someone with diabetes? The reason for my question is that the other day I had an extreme drop in my blood sugar (down to 61) and I had been taking flax seed and this morning I took a large tablespoon of flax seed and about 10:30 a.m. I could feel a low blood sugar situation coming on. It just got me to thinking about it!
Answer: I've been using flax seed oil on some days a teaspoon with every meal and I have not noticed this. Not sure how much difference there would be between the seeds and the oil.
Kelley misread that article on flax seed. Hyperglycemic is high blood sugar not low.
The effects of flaxseed on blood glucose levels are not clear, although hyperglycemic effects have been reported in one case series.
Question: Which is better for hot flashes flax seed oil or fish oil? Which is better for hot flashes flax seed oil or fish oil? I have tried soy which doesn't work.
Thanks,
Answer: Probably fish oil. Hot flashes can get terrible is your stressed or even occur when your stressed and fish oil relieves stress and relaxes you. Relaxing is the best thing for hot flashes so take the fish oil and it shall help you. Flax seed has to do with fiber which is needed when your constipated. So, I doubt you need the flax seed oil, unless your constipated too.
