Folic Acid
Question: Folic acid? What tipe of foods have a good sorce of folic acid besides cereal and bread ?
Answer: Leaf vegetables such as spinach and turnip greens, dried beans and peas, fortified cereal products, sunflower seeds and certain other fruits and vegetables are rich sources of folate, as is liver. Some breakfast cereals (ready-to-eat and others) are fortified with 25% to 100% of the recommended dietary allowance (RDA) for folic acid.

Question: Folic Acid? I have read a lot of articles that say not getting enough folic acid can increase the risk of birth defects, especiall neural tube defects. Everything I've read says that you need it most within the first 28 days of pregnancy, which is before you have even realized you're pregnant. As soon as I found out, I started taking prenatal vitamins, but I definitely wasn't getting much folic acid at all before then. Does a deficiency in folic acid pose a large risk for birth defects?
Answer: supposedly yes. both of my pregnancies I was unaware of until I was two months along, and they were fine. people have been having babies for centuries... dont get too scared about the things you read. its natural, its normal. even starving women in Africa still have babies... :) relax, dont let them scare you! good luck with your pregnancy and baby, and God bless!!!
Question: What is a good brand of folic acid for the cure of bacterial vaginosis? I am a young teenager and I think I suffer from bacterial vaginosis, even though I've never been checked out. I was looking on the internet and came upon a cure for B.V (folic acid). I want to give it a try but I just dont know which brand to pick. Could someone help me with this?
Answer: don't believe everything you read on the web, folic acid will not cure bacterial vaginosis. You need to see a doctor and get tested and treated appropriately.
Question: How much folic acid does the human adult need daily? Could someone give me this answer in miligrams please? I'm taking folic acid supplements and was wandering whether it was possible to over-dose on it?
Answer: The recommended daily dose is 0.4-1 mg for all women of childbearing age. Don't worry about over dosing, you would have to take a huge amount to OD. Any unused portion is simply excreted by your body. WTG for taking it by the way. 50-70% of all cases of neural tube defects in infants can be prevented just by taking that supplement
Question: How much folic acid and iron do you need when trying to conceive? I have some target brand prenatals that have 800 mcg of folic acid and 28 mg of iron. if i also eat foods with that in it will it be too much?
Answer: Folic acid you can not overdose on, you will pass what you dont need. I take a 800mg of folic, and my prenatal vitamin and what ever else i eat through out the day. You can OD on iron but that isnt enough to do anything.
Ive heard of folic helping concieve. But the main reason the doc tells you to take folic before your pregnant is to prevent the baby from having health problems.
Question: How much Folic acid is ok to take daily? So I am trying to conceive, and I read that it is good to start taking folic acid suppliments a few months before you try, but how much should I take daily?
Answer: hey hun
i agree that pregnacare is a great vitamin to take during pregnancy, but you can get another vitamin called pregnacare conception and it has all the vitamins you need when ttc. i used this vitamin when ttc with my second baby and i fell pregnant on the second month. during pregnancy you will be advised to take roughly 300-400mg of folic acid per day up until 12 weeks, so taking that when ttc is just the right amount.
take care and lots of baby dust
Question: How much is too much folic acid for men and women? My wife and I are trying to conceive and obviously folic acid helps with fertility with both parties. How much is too much folic acid for men and women?
Answer: I'd stick with around 800mcg daily. You might choose to take this in two parts; 400mcg morning and night, as Folic Acid is water soluble, so you pee much of it out during the day anyway. This also means that you'd have to take a LOT of it to call it 'too much' but any more than 800mcg probably isn't doing any additional good to your system. A healthy diet is better than OD-ing on vitamins :) Good luck!
Question: How much folic acid is too much when pregnant? I'm 7 weeks pregnant and was already taking vitamin supplements before I fell pregnant. My doctor has just prescribed folic acid and iron supplements and I am eating foods high in folic acid. Does anyone know if you can have too much?
Answer: one tablet everyday is enough
Question: How does Folic Acid help you get pregnant? Is it true that folic acid helps you get pregnant?
Or does it help when you are pregnant?
If so, how does it help you get pregnant?
Answer: Folic acid doesn't help you fall pregnant. What is does is help prevent neural tube defects in early pregnancy - things like anencephaly, encephaloceles, hydranencephaly, iniencephaly, schizencephaly and spina bifida are caused when the cells fold around into what will eventually become the spine and skull/brain. If they don't fuse properly, these defects can happen and folic acid helps to prevent them.
Question: How long should you take folic acid if you are not pregnant? My doctor gave me like 4 bottles of it at my last appointment to get my birth control I am not pregnant but she said I should still take it just in case I do get pregnant. Can you have to much Folic Acid? If I don't get pregnant for lets say for 6 months should I take Folic acid for the next six months? Please only answer if you truly know about folic acid. Thanks.
Answer: Folic acid is used to make the extra blood your body needs during pregnancy. All women of childbearing age should consume 400 micrograms of folic acid a day. Question: How much Folic Acid while trying to conceive? So, I am TTC. Taking Centrum Cardio which has a total of 400mcg of Folic Acid. Well, went to the pharmacy and asked the pharmacist if I should take more. She said it would be fine to take a seperate Folic Acid which is 800mcg. So, I am taking 1200mcg. Is that too much? Are there risks for taking too much Folic Acid? I've only been taking the both together for about 5 days.
Answer: You know what is absolutely crazy? When you are browsing Yahoo answers, you see little 'tales' about 13 year old girls who 'accidently' got pregnant. You see stories about girls who want abortions. You read about how these people are neglecting their babies. And here you are...trying to have a baby...it seems that those who do want to AVOID pregnant are the ones that do, and those who DO want to get pregnant are the ones who have a very, very hard time doing so..
It's so sad...
I know you have so many questions....No one on here can tell you exactly what is going on with your cervical mucous, Clomid results, ovulation, pregnancy tests, implantation bleeding, or pregnancy symptoms...I know you're trying to look for every ray of hope....trust me...I was in your shoes not too long ago.
Just as a little story, My husband and I tried to conceive for a whole year. (By the way...my cycles were extremely irregular...)Last year around Thanksgiving time, it finally happened.
I think it wasn't happening for a whole year because I was stressing so much over it. I kept thinking about the baby. I kept counting days, researching my ovulation charts, reading about all kinds of crazy methods to conceive a child. I had baby on the brain. Finally in November last year, I gave up. I had a move to think about. I had to pack things, clothes, furniture...had to get an apartment, start paying new bills with my husband, make a road trip to our new state..things were hectic and I forgot about baby-making, and somewhere around that time, it happened. I think when you are anticipating a child, your body isn't going to respond only because of how the stress hormones are high even though you don't know it.
And this can even put your cycle off. It sucks, really. I have some really helpful sites for you though..you should check them out:

Good luck..I know it's so frustrating...but it will happen. Like I said, we tried for a year..now I am a mom to a beautiful baby who was born in August 2008.
Question: How long before folic acid builds up in your system? I'm 1DPO, and if I'm pregnant this month should I begin taking prenatal/folic acid vitamins now? Also, would taking B vitamins be beneficial as well?
Answer: I agree, if you are ttc you should have already started taking folic acid and prenatals. I would recommened that you start asap.
B vitamins can help certain areas of ttc, but only really need to be taken on a need basis, eg: I am taking B6 to increase my luteal phase.
Good Luck and babydust!
Question: What are some foods that have folic acid in them? My doctor told me that I don't need to take folic acid any more but I would like to eat more foods that are high in folic acid but I don't know really what has folic acid in it. Thanks.
Answer: Dark green, leafy vegetables
Whole wheat bread
Lightly cooked beans and peas
Nuts and seeds
Sprouts
Oranges and grapefruits
Liver and other organ meats
Poultry
Fortified breakfast cereals and enriched grain products
One cup of orange juice provides half the RDA for folate, underscoring how easy a nutrient it is to consume. Food processing destroys 50 percent to 90 percent of the folate in foods, as it is very susceptible to heat. It is really important to lightly cooked vegetables as they retain their nutrient value the best when cooked minimally in water -- through steaming, stir-frying, or microwaving.
Question: How long are you supposed to have folic acid tablets during pregnancy? I'm about 4 weeks pregnant and just bought some Folic Acid tablets from the pharmacy.
How many am I supposed to have and for how long throughout the pregnancy?
Answer: You should take it untill you are 12 weeks! Then after that you should take extra calcium, i am, else if you dont have enough dairy the baby takes from ur teeth and bones!
Question: Is Folic Acid more important with IVF than a regular pregnancy? We all know that Folic Acid is very important in a regular pregnancy for the baby health.
Is it more important when undergoing IVF or equally important?
Answer: It doesn't matter which way you conceive, it's best for the baby. Pregnant mothers who are deficient in Folic acid have a high chance of having a baby with Spinal Bifida as well as some other nerve related disorders. The ddeficiencydoesn't have to be very high so it's better just to take it. Most mmultivitaminsnow have it. The sooner you start taking it the better.
Things that can help conception with ivf--taking a mmultivitamin(certain vitamins (c, b's, e and minerals like sselenium zinc and copper) increase fertility and implanting success.
DHEA taking 75 mg has shown to make the ovaries respond like young healthy ovaries. It's shown high results (women on it have more eggs retrieved and better grades with the eggs that fertilize) when taken for at least 3 to 4 months.
PABA taken at 300 mg helps IVF response.
Stay away from herbs! A lot of them will work against the fertility meds including CChaste Berry Even Raspberry Leaves are questionable.
Ask your RE about Arginine. It's an amino acid that increases blood circulation (aiding hormones meds to the follies) to the uterus and ovaries but I read on aarticlethat was against it with IVF but strangely fine with clomid???
Question: How much Folic acid should be in a Prenatal vitamin? I was checking my Prenatal vitamins that were prescribed by my doctor. It contains 1mg of Folic Acid. Shouldn't there be more? Or is that more important after you've conceived? I would think since my doctor prescribed it, it would be fine... I was just surprised. Maybe someone can inform me. Thanks!
Answer: I did some research and it's actually 800-1,000mcg if your pregnant. My multivitamin that I was taking before I got pregnant had 400mcg and now my prenatal vitamins have 800mcg, but 1mg actually equals 1,000mcg. So your fine your getting the right amount.
