Goji
Question: How long do Goji berry seeds take to germinate and can you use the seeds from the commercial dried fruit? After buying a pack of goji berries I want to grow them for myself and want to know what is the best way to plant the seeds and how long they take to germinate? I bought a pack of Linwoods Goji berrys and was wondering if i can use the seeds from there or do I need to buy special seeds for sowing? would really appreciate some help.
Answer: In China when growers start with goji seeds. They will usually mix the seeds with fine grain sand and leave the mixture under 20°C. When about 30% seeds start germination, it is the right time to sow goji seeds onto lands. The best timing for Chinese growers to sow seeds is early spring. They usually sow the seeds in rows with 30-40 cm in between, and 1 cm below the surface. Usually seeds will all start sprouting in 7-10 days.

Question: Is it possible to grow Goji berries from the seeds found in dried berries? I bought a 8 oz. bag of Organic dried Goji berries. I realized that each berry contains a lot of seeds and I was wondering if I were to plant these seeds would they sprout? Would they germinate if the seeds were from dried berries? The berries are certified organic, i don't know if that makes a difference, but i figured id include that. The bag doesn't say anything about how they were dried. Answers would be greatly appreciated, if you coud give me some guidelines that would be great too Thanks!
Answer: I think that they would.
What is interesting is how much companies are over-charging for this fruit now that it is popular. Goji is a name for the fruit sold in Chinese herb stores as Lycium.
Of course the imported product is not organically grown, or it doesn't say, but you I can purchase large bags, a couple of pounds of them, for a few dollars.
I found this site with a little information on growing them:
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/63945/
You might find more if you google Lycium barbarum.
But the only way to know for sure is to try it. Good luck!
Question: Is it harmful to eat a lot of GOJi berries? Are there any side effects of comsuming too much goji berries? If so, what is considered a lot? Are goji berries and wolfberries the same thing?
Answer: Goji and Wolfberry are the same thing.
It depends on what you consider a lot. They are similar in sugar and nutritional content to a raisin. So don't eat more than you would raisins.
I am sure you know of all the healthy benefits to eating Goji berries. It can be very good for your eyes, but like all Chinese medicinal foods, it takes time. So you need to eat a large amount every day for weeks.
Try putting them in tea or soup.

Question: Can anyone tell me how to tell the differents between Chinese woofberry and Tibetan goji berry? Hi, there are two types of wolfberry lycium chinese (which cost hardly anything) and lycium barburum (real goji berry).. Can anyone tell me how to spot the differents between the two when they are in dried fruit form.
Answer: Wolfberry is also another name for the western snowberry, Symphoricarpos occidentalis.
Wolfberry (also known as Chinese Wolfberry, Duke of Argyll's Tea Tree,[1] or Matrimony Vine[2]) is the common name for the fruit of Lycium barbarum (Chinese: 宁夏枸杞; pinyin: Níngxià gǒuqǐ) or L. chinense (Chinese: 枸杞; pinyin: gǒuqǐ), two species of boxthorn in the family Solanaceae (which also includes the potato, tomato, eggplant, and tobacco). Although its original habitat is obscure (probably southeastern Europe to southwest Asia), wolfberry species are now grown around the world, including in China.[3]
These are the authentic, very pure Grade A goji berries that are shade dried, organically cultivated wild plants.
Tibetan Lycium Eleagnus Barbarum (Tibetan Goji Berry) is the original source of this great energetic ancient Lycium berry and these Tibetan Goji berries are the purest form of the Lycium berry and come from a compassionate culture that honors all life. These Tibetan Goji berries have been grown in protected valleys in wild and cultivated areas of Inner Mongolia in million year-old soil where pesticides have never been used.
You will know when you are eating true Authentic Tibetan Goji Berries because they are very sweet and delicious tasting. If you get a cardboard sensation you may not be eating the true Goji (gogi as some type it).
Note: We are aware of other websites selling Goji berries for a lower price. Although they claim to be Tibetan Goji berries, the quality and taste is not the same. They are not from the Tibetan Goji Berry company.

Goji berries strenthen the immune system and may stimulate release of rejuvenative human growth hormone by the pituitary gland. Goji berries have been related, traditionally, as strength building, adding longevity and linked to sexual potency. In some study groups with elderly people given goji berries they showed increased optimism, appetite improvement, patients slept better, and some patients partially or fully recovered their sexual function.
Note: The Tibetan Goji Berry is not to be confused with the Chinese Wolfberries becoming more and more available. The Tibetan Goji Berry comes in 18 oz (1/2 kilo) bags, keep this in mind when comparing to the 1 lb prices of other companies. The Chinese Wolfberry may be grown with pesticides in depleted soil, dyed red, sulfured and irradiated. The Chinese Wolfberry may be more expensive too.
Goji berries contain polysaccharides which fortify the immune system. A polysaccharide found in this fruit has been found to be a powerful secretagogue (a substance that stimulates the secretion of rejuvenative human growth hormone by the pituitary gland).
Goji berries have been traditionally regarded as a longevity, strength-building, and sexual potency food of the highest order. In several study groups with elderly people the berry was given once a day for 3 weeks, many beneficial results were experienced and 67% of the patients T cell transformation functions tripled and the activity of the patients white cell interleukin-2 doubled. In addition, the results showed that all the patients spirit and optimism increased significantly, appetite improved in 95% of the patients, 95% of the patients slept better, and 35% of the patients partially recovered their sexual function.
The Goji berry is a deep-red, dried fruit about the same size as a raisin. The Goji berry tastes somewhat like a cross between a cranberry and a cherry.
A good daily intake of Goji berries is 10-30 grams (a small handful). Goji berries may be used as snacks or mixed with recipes or smoothies like other dried fruits.

Question: what conditions are suitble for goji berry growth? I recently brought a Goji berry plant for £3 from a mail order website however it is very small and weak looking with falling of leaves and i'm not sure if it need to treat it or if the conditions are wrong... Do they need treatment and what condiions are needed?
Answer: These plants originate from the Himalaya's, they are hardy to -15C. they will tolerate drought and over watering and will grow in shade or sun. So as you can see they are pretty easy to grow but you need to get yours started. Plant in 5+1/2" pot of good compost, do not feed at this stage, and water moderately. Keep in a greenhouse or well lit window cill until plant is showing signs of recovery. You can then plant it outdoors giving it a dose of general fertiliser. I prefer the liquid form. Should do fine. The plants grow wild in hedgerows in East Anglia and some southern counties of UK. Sometimes called Wolf Berries.
Question: Antioxidant in Goji Berries - How Can it Help Us? I read that Goji Berries are full of antioxidants. How is it beneficial for our health?
Answer: The goji berry and products derived from this fruit offer many nutritional benefits. It contains all eight of the essential sugars, called glyconutrients, which our bodies need in order to function. Without these sugars, body processes do not have the energy they need to work their best.
Goji berries have impressive immune boosting powers. In fact, some studies show that consuming goji regularly doubles the production of white blood cells. They also inhibit the growth of free radicals, which can injure our cells.
Goji berries are also known to promote longevity. In fact, adding goji berries to your diet can help you fight common signs of aging. On the outside, they help keep skin youthful, strong, and free of wrinkles. On the inside, it can help regulate your body's functions and equip your immune system to work at its best. Furthermore, goji is great for protecting your vision. It contains the compound zeaxanthin, which is known to keep eyes healthy. The goji berry is also highly prized for its ability to improve memory which normally occurs when a person reaches 50 and above thus it in spite of their age they are still active and wise.
Goji berries are also especially important to your circulatory system. Plus, they contain a high concentration of iron. This makes goji berries a great choice for those on vegetarian diets who may not consume iron, which is most commonly found in red meat, from other dietary sources.
Among its other benefits, the goji berry can also help relieve headaches and promote restful sleep. It also aids in digestion and can boost metabolism. They are even high in protein. In fact, the fruit has a complete amino acid complex and more muscle building proteins than wheat. Additionally, its level of B vitamins makes goji berry great for improving your energy and mood.
It is no wonder that the goji berry has been consumed for thousands of years and consistently touted for its health-promoting properties. However, only recently has the goji berry made its way into Western cultures. Today, new research reveals just how important it can be to our health. Consequently, it is now widely available around the world for anyone who wants to look and feel their best naturally. You can buy goji berries fresh or dried, drink goji juice, or enjoy a number of other goji supplement products.
Question: Has anyone used goji berry and maca together to improve sperm count and motility? We have been TTC for 1 year, recently found out that he has low sperm count and motility, he was a heavy weed smoker and stopped a little over a month ago. We have both been taking goji berry and maca pills and i am on a prenatal and he is taking fertiliaid for men............anyone had any success doing anything like this?
Answer: Sperm Count (Age Group 15 to 40)
Normal- Over 20 million
Temp low- Between 5 to 20 million
Low- Between 1 to 5 million
Lowest- Less than one million
Temp low condition is mainly due to your life style. You can reverse this condition if you identify the causes. You need to review your habits, practices, activities, stress level, foods, other medications and environment you live and work. I was in this group but now my count is back to normal.
Low and lowest conditions are mainly due to medical and biological conditions. You need to consult an urologist. Temp low group still can father a child if the motility is 60% of observed sperm but chances are 50%. Low group still can father a child if the motility is 60% of observed sperm but chances are less than 10%. Fathering a child by lowest group is very rare.
Your count normally goes down to below 50% if you are over 40.
