Health Benefits
Question: Health Benefits? What are the health benefits of cooking for yourself?
Answer: Lots I reckon! You can control the portion sizes for a start, and not just how much is on your plate but things like how much meat goes into a stir fry or how much spaghetti to cook. So you probably eat smaller servings which may help maintain a healthy body weight. Also you can control fats in oils and butters by either limiting their use, controlling the quantity or changing the method in which you cook something to avoid them all together. You can also control the salt content in a lot of things. It could also be healthier if you are using fresh meats, fruits and vegetables as the nutrition aspect would be maximised.
However, I reckon the main benefit would have to be taste. You can make things to taste as good as you want. And if it tastes good you are going to want to eat it, no matter how healthy! Hope that helps

Question: What are the health benefits and risks of becoming a ballerina? I hear a bunch of rumours like ballerinas stop having a menstruation cycle because they are so skinny. So I was wondering what are some good physical health benefits from being a ballerina and some bad physical health risks from being a ballerina?
Answer: Ballerinas face the same health risks as young female athletes when they don't eat enough to offset the energy they spend, and stop menstruating as a consequence, says a new study.
The study, led by sports medicine researcher Anne Ho ch, D.O., at The Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, has been presented at the American College of Sports Medicine meeting in Seattle.
"These two components of the female athlete tetras put them at higher risk for the other two; the cardiovascular and bone density deficits of much older, postmenopausal women," according to Dr. Ho ch, associate professor of orthopedic surgery and director of the Froedtert and the Medical College Women's Sports Medicine Center.
The researchers studied 22 professional ballerinas, all members of the Milwaukee Ballet Company, to determine the prevalence of disordered eating, amenorrhea (lack of menstruation), abnormal vascular function and low bone density.
The dancers completed questionnaires on their menstrual patterns and eating habits, and underwent a blood test for hormonal levels. Thirty-six percent of the group had disordered eating habits and 77 percent were in a calorie deficit. Twenty-seven percent were currently amenorrheic, 23 percent had low bone mass density and nine percent were taking birth control.rterial ultrasound measurements revealed that 64 percent had abnormal artery dilation in response to blood flow.
"It was unknown if professional dancers without menstrual periods have evidence of vascular dysfunction, yet some characteristics of the tetrad were common in this group," says Dr. Hoch.
"Eighty-six percent had one or more components, and fourteen percent had all four," the expert added.
Question: What are the health benefits of eating peanut butter? I'm looking for sources, excluding Wikipedia, that describe the health benefits of eating peanut butter. It would be nice if the facts were specific to crunchy peanut butter, but it isn't necessary. Peanut butter benefits compared to other popular foods would be awesome. Thanks!
Answer: One of the most interesting and peculiar nutrients found in peanuts is Resveratrol: this is a natural antimicrobial agent, produced by the peanut plant (and in even larger quantities by red grapes) to ward off potential pathogens
The minerals peanut butter contains are in variable amount (raw peanut butter with crushed skin contains much higher amounts than refined "nut-only" butter): iron is essential for the correct functioning of your red blood cells, while calcium promotes healthy bones and shields against muscle spasms.
Although not among the richest foods in potassium, peanut butter still contains fairly good amounts of it, and research has indicated that diets rich in potassium reduce the risk of hypertension (bananas are, however, a better source of potassium, try making a banana and peanut butter sandwich!)
Proteins are present in high amounts (about 24% in weight), together with very important micro-nutrients such as Vitamin E, Vitamin B3 and large amounts of beneficial minerals such as iron, magnesium, potassium, copper and calcium.
Vitamin E is one of the most powerful liposoluble antioxidants, shown to significantly reduce the risk of cancer and cardiovascular diseases; Vitamin B3 (also known as Niacin) is a water-soluble vitamin that aids in the recovery of cell DNA damage (thus protecting from cancer) and in improving sexual bodily functions by assuring the proper secretion of sexual hormones.

Question: What is the health benefits package like for California state government workers? Would like to apply for a CA state government job, but due to my family circumstances (I am the sole breadwinner in the family with a hubby and two small boys), need a decent health insurance benefits package that doesn't cost the earth!! If anyone has had first hand experience, some advice would be much appreciated, especially how you like the coverage and if it works for you.
Many thanks for all of your help.
Answer: It might depend on what position you are applying for. You could call and ask.
Question: What are the health benefits of drinking green chai tea? I bought a box of the Stash green chai tea yesterday. My family was shocked because I can't stand tea of any kind. But I just drank my first mug of this a few minutes ago and it tastes wonderful! It actually sort of tastes a bit like the Mexican horchata. So I'm considering taking it up regularly instead of drinking Swiss Miss and Folgers. What are the health benefits of this delicious beverage?
Answer: Your sh!t will turn green.
Question: What are the health benefits of using tofu? What are the health benefits of replacing chicken in things like stir fry by using tofu? I am not a vegetarian, but I am trying to cut down on meat. Is there any beneficial reason to eat tofu instead? If it makes any difference, I'm also trying to lose about 6 lbs.
Answer: Well for a start it tastes sooo good! Marinade it in honey, oil and garlic and its just soooo good, then stirfry it with veg and a blue dragon lemon stirfry sauce, but as for health reasons:
Good source of protein with minimal fat
For women it regulates your hormones due to its estrogen content, thought for men just two servings of soya/tofu a week can lower sperm count
I think it's good for your heart but I'm not sure about that one
It's just really useful, I'm a non preachy vegetarian and I just love the fact you won't give yourself food poisoning with tofu. I don't know if it has any weight loss properties so to speak, just try it (I recommend cauldron tofu from the fridge section, about £1.10 from Morrison's, not blue dragon, if you're in the UK)
Question: How do the health benefits compare between walking and running? I know running burns more calories in the same amount of time, but if I just take up walking, how do the long-term health benefits compare? Is running more heart-healthy, or are they about the same? What are the pros and cons of each?
Answer: Some people develop knee/foot problems with running. Walking is all-round healthier ( less brutal to the body) . But that means brisk walking not leisure walking.
Question: What are the health benefits of chick peas? What are the health benefits of chick peas?
I know a very healthy person who is always eating chick peas. What is so good about them?
Answer: Some varieties of beans, notably chick peas, are rich in plant substances known as phytoestrogens which have an action similar to, though far weaker than, the hormone oestrogen in the body. Some scientists have speculated that consuming a diet rich in phytoestrogens may help protect against heart disease. Research suggests that one effect of phytoestrogens is to lower blood levels of the blood fats low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and triglycerides that are linked with heart disease and stroke. One study, found that feeding rats with chick peas brought about significant reductions in the levels of both these forms of unhealthy fats. However, even beans that do not contain much in the way of phytoestrogens may have benefits on fat levels in the bloodstream on account of their rich fibre content. Beans also tend to be rich in folic acid which, amongst other benefits, appears to help reduce the risk of heart disease.
In one study, eating four or more servings of beans or lentils each week was found to confer significant protection from heart disease. While baked beans are seen as a staple food by many of us, I would tend to avoid these on account of their added sugar and salt.
Question: What are the health benefits of eating whole wheat bread vs. white? I am eating that kind of wheat bread, it is kind of sweet but really good. I am just wondering about the health benefits/differences between white bread and wheat bread.
Looks like 100% whole wheat....We also bought other bread that has 7 whole wheats or something like that, my family has devoured that bag already :)
Answer: The wheat bread that you are eating is probably sweet because of some complex additives, one of which would invariably be sugar. Also chemicals and preservatives are part of the mix to increase its shelf life. Still, it is certainly a healthier alternative to the white bread. The flour in white bread is white through finer grinding and sifting (not through bleaching) and in the process many phytonutrients are lost. The carbohydrates in the white bread are easily digested and almost immediately converted to blood sugar. That results in weight gain or hampers weight loss. In the wholegrain bread varieties the structure of the carbohydrates is more complex as less fiber and wheat germ has been lost in the milling process. As a result, your body gets the fuel it needs for physical or mental activity at a more measured pace. The fibers preserved in the larger unmilled particles of flour will improve your intestinal activity, The vitamins and minerals give your body the necessary energy boost.
Watch out for preservatives in whole wheat bread. Try an artisanal bakery or bake yourself for a change. I am sure, you and your family will taste the difference.
Question: What are the health benefits of eating a banana? I am a 26 year old man, if that makes any difference. What are the health benefits of eating bananas?
Answer: Bet you didn't know all these health benefits of the banana! P.S. Bananas must be the reason monkeys are so happy all the time! Yum
Bananas: Containing three natural sugars - sucrose, fructose and glucose combined with fibre, a banana gives an instant, sustained and substantial boost of energy. Research has proven that just two bananas provide enough energy for a strenuous 90-minute workout. No wonder the banana is the number one fruit with the world's leading athletes
Anaemia: High in iron, bananas can stimulate the production of haemoglobin in the blood and so helps in cases of anaemia
Blood Pressure: This unique tropical fruit is extremely high in potassium yet low in salt, making it the perfect to beat blood pressure. So much so, the US Food and Drug Administration has just allowed the banana industry to make official claims for the fruit's ability to reduce the risk of blood pressure and stroke
Brain Power: 200 students at a Twickenham (Middlesex) school were helped through their exams this year by eating bananas at breakfast, break, and lunch in a bid to boost their brain power. Research has shown that the potassium-packed fruit can assist learning by making pupils more alert.
Constipation: High in fibre, including bananas in the diet can help restore normal bowel action, helping to overcome the problem without resorting to laxatives.
Depression: According to a recent survey undertaken by MIND amongst people suffering from depression, many felt much better after eating a banana. This is because bananas contain tryptophan, a type of protein that the body converts into serotonin, known to make you relax, improve your mood and generally make you feel happier.
Hangovers: One of the quickest ways of curing a hangover is to make a banana milkshake, sweetened with honey. The banana calms the stomach and, with the help of the honey, builds up depleted blood sugar levels, while the milk soothes and re-hydrates your system.
Heartburn: Bananas have a natural antacid effect in the body; so if you suffer from heartburn, try eating a banana for soothing relief.
Morning Sickness: Snacking on bananas between meals helps to keep blood sugar levels up and avoid morning sickness.
Mosquito bites: Before reaching for the insect bite cream, try rubbing the affected area with the inside of a banana skin. Many people find it amazingly successful at reducing swelling and irritation.
Nerves: Bananas are high in B vitamins that help calm the nervous system.
Overweight and at work? Studies at the Institute of Psychology in Austria found pressure at work leads to gorging on comfort food like chocolate and crisps. Looking at 5,000 hospital patients, researchers found the most obese were more likely to be in high-pressure jobs. The report concluded that, to avoid panic-induced food cravings, we need to control our blood sugar levels by snacking on high carbohydrate foods every two hours to keep levels steady.
PMS: Forget the pills - eat a banana. The vitamin B6 it contains regulates blood glucose levels, which can affect your mood.
Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD): Bananas can help SAD sufferers because they contain the natural mood enhancer tryptophan.
Smoking: Bananas can also help people trying to give up smoking. The B6, B12 they contain, as well as the potassium and magnesium found in them, help the body recover from the effects of nicotine withdrawal.
Stress: Potassium is a vital mineral, which helps normalize the heartbeat, sends oxygen to the brain and regulates your body's water balance. When we are stressed, our metabolic rate rises, thereby reducing our potassium levels. These can be rebalanced with the help of a high-potassium banana snack.
Strokes: According to research in "The New England Journal of Medicine," eating bananas as part of a regular diet can cut the risk of death by strokes by as much as 40%!
Temperature Control: Many other cultures see bananas as a "cooling" fruit that can lower both the physical and emotional temperature of expectant mothers. In Thailand, for example, pregnant women eat bananas to ensure their baby is born with a cool temperature.
Ulcers: The banana is used as the dietary food against intestinal disorders because of its soft texture and smoothness. It is the only raw fruit that can be eaten without distress in over-chronicler cases. It also neutralizes over-acidity and reduces irritation by coating the lining of the stomach.
Warts: Those keen on natural alternatives swear that if you want to kill off a wart, take a piece of banana skin and place it on the wart, with the yellow side out. Carefully hold the skin in place with a plaster or surgical tape!
A banana really is a natural remedy for many ills. When you compare bananas to an apple, it has four times the protein, twice the carbohydrate, three times the phosphorus, five times the vitamin A and iron, and twice the other vitamins and minerals. It is also rich in potassium and is one of the best value foods around. Maybe its time to change that well-known phrase so that we say, "A banana a day keeps the doctor away!"
Question: What are the health benefits of eating tofu over boneless chicken breast? I made tofu parmigiana last night, just to test it out and see if it is good or not, and it is GREAT!
But, chicken is good too, and offers more texture.
What are the health benefits of tofu over almost-fat-free-chicken breast?
Answer: Physical health benefits - avoiding the animal growth hormones, and antibiotics given to chickens. Avoiding the parasites and viruses often found in animal flesh.
Mental health benefits - knowing that a friendly little bird didn't have to die for you to eat dinner.
