Healthy Heart
Question: Healthy Heart? i just found out my family history of heart problems is pretty serious and i have a horrible diet. does anyone know of any good diets for a healthy heart? im also pretty skinny so i dont wanna lose weight while doing this
Answer: In order to keep your LDL and your risk for heart disease low, you should start on the Heart Healthy Diet. The Heart Healthy Diet is an eating plan that can help keep your blood cholesterol low and decrease your chance of developing heart disease. Remember: the Heart Healthy Diet is fine for the whole family, including children from the age of 2-4 onward. Children under 2 years of age should not follow the Heart Healthy Diet - they need more fat to provide enough calories for growth and development.
Heart Healthy Diet Guidelines -- you should eat:
* 8-10% of the day's total calories from saturated fat.
* 30 percent or less of the day’s total calories from fat.
* Less than 300 milligrams of dietary cholesterol a day.
* Limit sodium intake to 2400 milligrams a day.
* Just enough calories to achieve or maintain a healthy weight and reduce your blood cholesterol level. you can visit this site for more Heart Healthy Diet

Question: Can a lot of anxiety and stress cause a heart attack in a person with a healthy heart? I have been to 2 cardiologists and a whole bunch of other doctors to check if I have a heart problem. They've done multiple tests and all conclude that I have a healthy heart. At times I feel a sense of my heart skipping a beat and off and on pain, I do suffer from some health anxiety and it stresses me out. I have a heart obsession I'm always afraid of something happening with my heart. I'm 21 yrs old and overweight but I have been eating healthy. I eat fish, lots of veggies and drink organic juices. So I just want to know if thinking bad things all the time can cause bad things to happen?
Answer: I am the same exact way. I have been experiencing panic/anxiety attacks for a little more than a year. It is one of the scariest feelings in the world when you think something is wrong with your heart. I experience heart palpitations very often. I am constantly wondering if I am going to die, but the doctor keeps reassuring me that my heart is healthy, and I am absolutely fine.
To answer your question, yes, a great deal of stress, can cause a heart attack, but I don't think you have anything to worry about at age 21. Obeisity, is also a factor in heart disease, but again, if your doctor has assured you that your heart is healthy, then my advice is to take his word. When you feel that your heart is skipping a beat, remember your conversations with your doctor. If you need immediate reassurance, visit the ER, most likely, they will give you something to calm you, and then send you home. I've been there and done that MANY times.
A pshycotheropist would probably give you the stregnth to over come your anxiety attacks on your own. I am just beginning to self cope myself. Sometimes, I wonder if I suffer from hypocondriocis.
Also, be sure to ask your health professional about any prescription drugs that can help you overcome your fears. I hate being prescribed meds, but I was taking .05 mg of xanax 3x per day, and you'd be suprised at how much it helped me. It was a little expensive though, so my doctor suggested klonopin. 1mg, 2 tx per day. It works great as well. I suggest you discuss your options with your doctor, and see if that helps.
Panic attacks are by far the most scary things I have ever experienced, and sometimes, they are hard to get through. However, It sounds to me like you are experiencing the same problem. Just keep eating healthy and I think you will be just fine. I hope you can find something to help you cope with this disorder. No one should have to live their life in fear.
If you ever need reassurance you can email me. [email protected]. I have found that talking with others with the same problem is one thing that always made me feel more comfortable. Try not to think about it, that only makes things worse. Remember, many people have this disorder, and you will be ok, and hopefully someday be able to overcome these attacks all together! Good luck with everything and take care!

Answer: You can teach them about the importance of pulse rates, and show them how to take check their own. You could then have them perform it on each other or calculate their own pulse. You could show them how to do a stepping exercise to achieve their max heart rate, then analyze the results. This is called the "Harvard Step Test". It's a type of arobic exercise which is both educational and fun.

Answer: LAMB & EGGPLANT RAGU
4 ounces whole-wheat rigatoni or penne
4 ounces ground lamb or lean ground beef
2 cloves garlic, chopped
1/4 teaspoon fennel seed
1 1/2 cups diced eggplant
1 teaspoon extra-virgin olive oil
1 8-ounce can no-salt-added tomato sauce
1/2 cup red wine
1 1/2 teaspoons chopped fresh oregano or 1/2 teaspoon dried
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground pepper
1 teaspoon pine nuts, toasted (see Tip)
1/4 cup crumbled feta (optional)
1. Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Cook pasta 8 to 10 minutes or according to package directions.
2. Meanwhile, cook lamb (or beef), garlic and fennel seed in a large nonstick skillet over medium heat, breaking up the meat with the back of a spoon, until the lamb (or beef) is browned, 3 to 4 minutes. Add eggplant and oil; cook, stirring occasionally, until the eggplant browns, about 4 minutes. Add tomato sauce and wine; cook, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens, about 3 minutes. Stir in oregano, salt and pepper.
3. Drain the pasta; serve topped with the sauce and sprinkled with pine nuts and feta, if using.
TIP: To toast pine nuts: Cook in a dry skillet over medium-low heat, stirring constantly, until fragrant and lightly browned, 2 to 4 minutes.
Question: What are some of your favorite heart healthy recipes? A family member of mine is recovering from a heart attack. We want to keep as much flavor as we can, but make things as healthy as possible. I am a pretty good cook and am open to creative options.
He is on a low sodium, low fat, low cholesterol diet.
Answer: Zucchini Bake.
Sounds gross, tastes great.
Yup, this will meet the criteria, because it serves six,
and it is extra virgin olive oil the cholesterol is low per serve.
The bacon only adds a tiny bit of yum to each piece but is not overwhelming in fat or cholesterol, the hint is to use quality ingredients.
3 x medium Zucchini (peeled then grated)
5 x eggs (lightly beaten )
1 x large onion (finely chopped)
100g diced bacon (fat cut off)
1 cup lite cheese (grated)
1 cup self raising flour (sifted)
1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil
Salt + Pepper to taste (less salt more pepper for heart patients)
***Combine all ingredients after there respective grating, chopping, etc. season to taste with salt and pepper.
(Dont use very much salt or you are defeating the purpose of the recipe :) )
***Place in an 6" x 11" oven proof dish
***Bake in 180 degree celcius oven for 40mins or until golden brown.
**Yum, Yum! Serve with salad. (no dressing!)
PS I always think it tastes better the next day after its been refrigerated then reheated. I dont know why but it is more flavoursome.
Sorry dont know pounds and Fahrenheit conversions, but should be easy to google.
Good Luck!

Question: What are some heart healthy appetizers for Easter? It has to be heart healthy, and of coure yummy!
Answer: Make a beautiful veggie platter with dip. Get four bell peppers, different colors. Fill each with: slice carrots in coins, use fresh snap peas in another, sliced celery, sliced cucumbers. Get a small bowl and make a dill dip. Put all four containers in a pretty lined basket. Scatter fresh cherry tomatoes to fill in the holes. Nothing like a nice looking veggie platter.
