Question: Fish Oil supplements useless for decreasing chances of heart disease? I just saw on CNN this morning a cardiologist saying that fish oil supplements are basically useless, that only the actual food source provides the benefits of decreasing stroke and heart disease? Is this so?
I always understood that the omega-3 fatty acids are what provide these benefits, which are included in both the fish oils supplements and obviously the fish themselves....
Answer: I think they are somehow right because in the actual food you find different mineral and organic complexes that can't be obtained during chemical reactions in pharma. laboratories.
omega 3 fatty acid can't be bad for your health but it's better to eat the whole complex of vitamins, lipids, proteins, etc.
Question: What are the best supplements for the heart to keep it nice and strong? Sometimes I think my heart may need support. Or maybe it's just gas :D
Answer: CoQ10 is a really good one. I take it about every day.
Question: Alternative Supplements for Post Heart Attacks? What would you recommend, nutritionally, for those who have had a heart attack? Also, if you have suplementation recommendations, at what dose levels?
Answer: You really ought to ask your Cardiologist about this. The supplements that you take can interfere with other medications that you MUST have.
After your heart attack, you'll be on Aspirin, Plavix (if you got a stent or angioplasty), as well as probably a Beta-blocker... maybe a few others, too.
Because it's more important for you to take those medications, check with your doctor (and maybe a pharmacist, too) about what supplements you can take in addition. You definitely don't want to take something that will inhibit the effects of your aspirin or plavix or anything.
Question: Is it safe and beneficial for women 30 yrs and younger to take fish oil supplements to prevent heart disease? Which is better? flaxseed or fish oil supplements?
Answer: Absolutely, it's good to get omega-3 from fish oil/flax seed. I personally prefer flaxseed supplements because you don't get the fishy aftertaste.
Question: Can Toprol XL and OTC magnesium supplements be taken together for heart palpitations? I have been diagnosed with mitral valve prolapse and take Toprol XL 50 mg every day for the past 10 years.
Answer: since your body is accostomed to the pill and what it's composed of, it prbably shuldnt be a problem.
although, you should look on the label if it says "do not take with..." , then read the ingredients on the other pills, and if it doesnt have that ingredient it probably wont be an issue.
nonetheless, you should still take the pills a good 20 minutes in between each other.
Question: What causes rapid heart beats, are there any supplements that i can take?
Answer: It depends on what type of rapid heartbeat you're talking about. If you're just sitting still, doing nothing and it's racing (over 100 beats per minute), then it could be a condition called atrial fibrillation. If that's what happening, then you run a very high risk of throwing a blood clot. If the clot goes to your heart, lung, or brain it can be fatal.
The only way to tell is to get to your doctor and have an EKG done. If it's rapid during or just after exercise, that's okay. There are no supplements to help A fib, only serious prescription heart medications.

Answer: Healthy Heart Guide - An Introduction
Why do you need to keep a healthy heart?
Heart disease is the #1 cause of death in men and women, greater than the next five causes of death combined!
According to the latest estimates by the American Heart Association, over 64 million Americans have one or more forms of cardiovascular disease (CVD).
Fortunately, there are ways to significantly lower your chances of developing heart disease and reverse the effects of a current heart condition you may or may not be aware of. Lower cholesterol, triglycerides, homocysteine and CRP levels are a start to promoting healthy hearts.

9 Supplements for Healthy Lungs
1.Daily multivitamin. Look for products containing 15,000 IU of mixed carotenoids, including beta-carotene.
2.Vitamin C. This water-soluble vitamin can provide additional protection against the oxidative effects of air pollution and smoke.
3.Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10). This powerful antioxidant can improve the use of oxygen at the cellular level.

Question: Can calcium supplements contribute to clogged arteries in a person with heart disease?
Answer: In normal amounts, no.
Question: Are there any heart concerns in taking non-hormone supplements such as NO2 or Creatine for physical training? I've been working out for the past 4 years and decided to take creatine to aid in building size and strength.
I guess my main concern is the problems that is associated with taking steroids. It increases heart size (because it is a muscle), and have known to cause heart failure amongst other effects.
Now, I do know that Nitric Oxide (NO2) and creatine are not steroids. So my question is, will taking NO2 (such as NO-Xplode) or creatine enlarge the heart? Are there any other concerns I should be worried about? Please list your sources also. Thanks everyone!
I know that NO2 contains caffeine (1 scoop = 8oz drip coffee) and the suggested use calls for 2-3 scoops.
Answer: no it won't cause heart failure. weight training in and of itself will cause modest degrees of cardiac hypertrophy but those compounds won't exacerbate things
Question: Magnesium supplements?/ heart? The cardiologist said my tricuspid and mitral valves close asymmetrically so my heart goes, "lub lub dub," instead of other people's, "lub dub."
He suggested that I take a magnesium supplement, so I will try that.
Does anyone know if that is good for your heart?
Or what it amounts to if you have this asymmetrical valve closure?
He said it does not appear to be MVP after all, unless that occurs episodically.
Thank you! I used to, and sometimes still do, drink a large mug of either black or green tea in the morning.
I was thinking I should cut out caffeine though if I have this heart thing. However the cardiologist did not say that.
I can' t find much on the Internet about this asymmetric valve thing.
Answer: Magnesium is good for heart rythm. You can take it with calcium but be sure to take a little vitamin d with it. D gets the calcium into the bones, so it doesn't stay in the blood and get in the arteries. Dont take too much vitamin d, check the rda, lately they've increased it somewhat cause they see new benefits of it.
Your doctor sounds wonerful- he's trying nutrition. You are fortunate!
I get palpitations myself, I avoid caffeine- chocolate, coffee, .
Question: I get pain in my heart when I have phosphatidylcholine or phosphatidylserine supplements.? Im seeking an explanation that links the cause and effect.
Answer: Chest pain is a known side effect of these supplements, but I do not think anyone understands the exact mechanism by which it causes the chest pain. I would recommend you stop taking these supplements and go to the doctor for evaluation.
