High Protein

Question: High Protein? Can someone tell me the advantages of a very high protein diet? How exactly does it work....I mean, just how much protein are we talking about? Are fruits, veggies and grains allowed at all? Also, what KINDS of protein are we talking about?

Answer: "Protein is an important component of every cell in the body. Hair and nails are mostly made of protein. Your body uses protein to build and repair tissues. You also use protein to make enzymes, hormones, and other body chemicals. Protein is an important building block of bones, muscles, cartilage, skin, and blood. Along with fat and carbohydrates, protein is a "macronutrient," meaning that the body needs relatively large amounts of it. Vitamins and minerals, which are needed in only small quantities, are called "micronutrients." But unlike fat and carbohydrates, the body does not store protein, and therefore has no reservoir to draw on when it needs a new supply." The amount of protein required is determined by weight and activity level. There is a link in source for whey of life and they have a calculator to determine how much protein you need per day. When on a high protein diet, other healthy foods like low glycemic level whole grains and vegetables are advisable. Low glycemic is low carbohydrate and sugar levels. Fruits aren't usually on there, or very few are because they are high in natural sugar which makes them high glycemic food. Types of protein can be from lean meats, chicken, turkey, fish, beans, dairy products like eggs, skim milk, low fat yogurt, cheddar, swiss and muenster cheese and oatmeal. There are also many brands and kinds of protein shakes available as well. There are some that are low carb and no or low fat. Personally I would stick with whey protein as it is better for you than soy protein shakes. More about whey protein can be found at the whey of life link as well. I hope I've helped answer your questions. Michelle Suffered protein starvation and malnourishment due to weight loss surgery gone bad. Ended up losing entire stomach and must rely on protein shakes and vitamin supplements for nutrition as I am unable to absorb nutrients from food.
