Answer: after a while, you'll be able to in moderation,
read this, I've researched it for you!
I had gastric bypass surgery in April 2005. I started out at 268, now I’m 180 and holding. These links will help you in many ways to make a decision if this is for you or not. I vote yes, because it made such a difference in my life. I was taking 8 pills a day, and after my surgery, I lost my diabetes. The way they do the surgery, takes your diabetes away. I no longer have to take glucophage, and I no longer have high Cholesterol or high blood pressure. I’m down to 2 pills a day. I went from a size 26-28 to a 16-18.

I really researched my surgeon, and I made a wise choice. Always get a surgeon that has done at least 200 of these surgeries. Get someone with a lot of experience, and you will do well.
Here’s all about my surgeon…

You just can’t find a better surgeon than him! He’s probably done at least 500 of the surgeries, so far. I did so well after my surgery, I thank him every time I see him.
I made it to 175! It's been almost 2 years since my surgery. I haven't had any complications at all with my surgery! My health has been very good, and I've lost the weight nice and slow, so my body doesn't look that much out of shape. I've been faithfully taking my vitamins, and my blood work came back excellent! I still think very highly of Dr. Pilkington, and would recommend to anyone thinking of this surgery, to have Dr. Pilkington as his or her surgeon. I'm walking proof, that he is an excellent doctor. I just spoke to another patient of his who told me she had a very good experience with him, and she is in excellent health, as well. He is a very caring doctor. I live in Florida in the winter. I see alot of folks down there because of my job, and I see people from all over the USA and overseas. Since my surgery, I've talked to lots of others that have had the surgery in Florida, and some of them didn't do as well, and I tend to think it's because their doctors weren’t as competent as mine. I feel that part of how you do, is because of your general health and attitude. The other major part is how good your doctor is.

Good luck with your surgery and new life!
Question: smoke and drink with lap band? can you smoke and drink after lap band?
Answer: You can, but im sure all dr's would advise against it. I dont smoke at all, but I do drink occasionally, it's just like any other beverage, drink it a little slower and you should be fine. If your a heavy drinker you should talk with your Dr.
Question: after lap band surgery,i couldnt drink much, now a week later i can drink more, why is that.?
Answer: The swelling in your stomach has gone down, so there is a large whole in your stomach. The band is stitched to your stomach, so it will swell some.
As you adjust the band you will notice the same thing. The first few days after an adjustment you will not be able to drink or eat as much as you will after a few days to a week or so. This is completely normal for me.
If you are having problems, however, call your doctor. You have to be able to drink enough to keep yourself hydrated.
Question: What are your thoughts on lap band surgery? A friend of mine (who is a hypochondriac) is going to have lap band surgery. I think she deliberately got obese so that she could "go under the knife". She is lazy, eats all the fatty foods and drinks sugar laced drinks. I hope the surgery lifts her self esteem. I don't think she realises that there'll be no more parties where she can drink until 3 or 4am. And there goes that daily carton of iced coffee. Perhaps she will take up excercise on the equipment that sits collecting dust.
Answer: Before most surgeons perform any type of obesity surgery, the patient must undergo counseling and education to prepare the patient for the drastic life-style changes he or she will have to make. The surgeon wants the surgery to be success full and select candidates carefully
Question: what's the best diet for a lap band user who needs to re-lose some weight? I've had my lap band for a little over 5 years now, and I've gained about 60% of my weight back. I drink lots of water and eat healthy most of the time, and I guess I could exercise a little more, but the weight does not seem to be coming off. Any suggestions?
Answer: Most people get obese because their bodies just can't process carbs any more. They become insulin resistant & carbs go straight to fat cells. As healthy as fruit may be, it just doesn't promote fat loss. The body won't release fat stores until the blood stream is free of insulin. In someone insulin resistant, the insulin response is too sensitive & produces too much insulin.
I highly recommend that you do no carbs for 3 days to get past the carb addiction & then increase carbs by 5grams every 5 days. Your carb level for losing weight may be very low, which is fairly common with insulin resistance.
Simple carbs are addictive & can be disastrous to health. The best way to break the addiction is NO carbs for 3 days. Make a huge batch of deviled eggs, eat one every time you want "something" - have huge omelets with bacon, sausage, peppers, mushrooms & cheese. Pork chops smothered with peppers, mushrooms & cheese - pork rinds & dip or tuna/chicken/turkey/egg salad - steaks - a huge sugar free cheese cake. Eat so much you won't feel deprived of anything. By the 4th day, the addiction will be gone & the low carb way of eating will create a natural appetite suppression that makes it much easier to make healthy choices.
You can lose more body fat eating protein & fat (don't eat protein alone) than not eating AT ALL. To lose weight fast, eat all you want, but nothing but meat, eggs, healthy oils, mayo, butter & half an avocado a day (for added potassium). Keep the calories high & the fat percentage high, at least 65% of calories. Green vegetables & some cheese will continue weight loss but at a slower pace.
The first 2 weeks eat several cups a day of (mostly) lettuce & celery, cucumbers, radishes, mushrooms, peppers & more variety of vegetables thereafter - add 5 grams per day additional every week (20 grams day first 2 weeks, 25grams 3rd week, 30grams 4th week etc) til you gain weight, then subtract 10grams. That will be your personal carb level (everyone is different & depends on how active you are.)
Start with meat, fats & salads for 2 weeks and then slowly add in more green veg, wk4 fresh cheeses, wk5 nuts & seeds, wk6 berries, wk7 legumes, wk8 other fruits, wk9 starchy veg, wk10 whole grains. You will learn how your body reacts to different foods.
The first week is just water weight but fat is lost thereafter if you keep your calories high enough. Otherwise the body will strip it's own lean tissue for nutrition. Although that may look great on a scale it will make it MUCH easier to accumulate fat in the future (since all that pesky lean tissue burning up calories will be gone). The body won't release fat stores if you lower calories below what it needs. It will slow metabolism to compensate & store every spare ounce as fat. If you continue lowering calories, it will continue lowering the set point, til it can survive off nothing & store fat on anything. The body will only release it's fat stores if it knows there is plenty of nutritious food.
Eating carbs while trying to lose body fat is terribly inefficient. When in glycolysis (burning glucose as fuel) you have to lower your calories (which slows your metabolism) & exercise heavily to deplete your glycogen stores before burning body fat.
The core of Atkins program is converting the body from glycolysis (burning glucose as fuel) to ketosis (burning fat as fuel). Dietary fat levels need to be at >65% of total calories, if not, the body will still remain in glycolysis by converting 58% of excess protein into glucose (via gluconeogenesis).
It takes minimum of 3 days to convert a body to ketosis, (but only one bite to convert back to glycolysis). People feel sluggish the first week but most feel better than ever thereafter.
Simple carbohydrates (sugar, flour, bread, cereal, pasta, potatoes, rice) trigger insulin (the ONLY fat storage hormone). The more protein the more the fat burning hormone glucagon is released.
High insulin levels promote inflammation, weight gain, hunger & unbalance other hormones. Controlling insulin levels will balance out other hormones & allow human growth hormone (HGH) to be produced naturally so lean muscle will be gained even without exercise.
Ground flax seed (4 Tbsp) 1/4 cup water, artificial sweetener, mix in a raw egg - let sit 10 min. to absorb liquid, put cream cheese in the middle & nuke 2 min. for daily fiber needs.
As long as you have <9grams carbs per hour, you will maintain insulin control & shouldn't gain weight, no matter the calories because insulin, the fat storage hormone is not activated. Many people gain weight on high carb, do low carb to lose weight & then are shocked when they return to high carb & gain weight.
Question: I got my Lap-Band on April 24 of this year and I wanted to know about drinking alcohol.? See my 21st birthday is June 24th .. next weekend. and of course I want to drink alcohol can anyone tell me if this will hurt me in anyway??? I mean is it ok?
Answer: i got my band Dec 2nd. i drank at Christmas,it was no problem!. my surgeon said it is ok to drink alcohol, but to be aware that you get drunk a LOT quicker than usual, because you are eating less food!. i often go out for a drink, but to be honest 2-3 drinks and i start to feel a bit queasy. i don't actually feel i need to drink much,it is as if my body is fooled into thinking i have had loads and need to stop!.
So in answer to your question, yes you can drink but be careful because if you get too drunk you may try to eat foods you can't cope with!.like not chewing enough, etc. i have lost 50lb and still enjoy my social life,i am always aware of my band though,i just work with it!
Any more questions, feel free to email me- [email protected]
Edit; to the person above, the woman asking the question is within her rights to ask people who have had the band on their experiences!. considering the surgeons have not lived with a band inside them,it is the banded person who can give the best answers to many of the questions!
Question: What do you go through after having Lap Band surgery? I am thinking about having that procedure done. What do you eat, drink, exercise?
Answer: I had the lap-band procedure on July 26th 2006. After surgery for the first week you can have water, crystal-lite, diet Snapple. Then after that you start on the protein shakes for 2 weeks. You are to have 3 a day. Then after those 2 weeks you can start on one meal a day of chicken, fish, turkey, vegetables. You have to puree them. You have to have 2 protein shakes a day also. Also you have to drink about 64oz of water a day which can consist of crystal lite, diet Snapple. After that 2 weeks you can start introducing solid foods. Only 3 oz and no red meat. You have to walk about 40 minuets a day. I do about 5 miles a day. Good luck if you decide. I've lost 40 pounds so far.
Question: I am looking for information from lap band or gastric bypass patients, i am considering surgery myself.? For anyone who has had Lap Band surgery, advice on how you quit drinking with meals. Was it very difficult to follow the rules?
Answer: I had Gastric Bypass surgery about a year ago. I've lost 140 pounds and only have 40 more to go. I've had zero complications.
I never stopped drinking while eating. I mean, you can't "chug" liquids, but my surgeon told me it was okay to SIP no more than one oz of fluid with a meal, so I have always done that. I like spicier foods and I found that I just couldn't get through a meal without a little liquid to quench the fire on my tongue...lol... I usually drink milk with my meals to get in the extra protien, one ounce only. My surgeon said it was fine and I've had no issues because of it.
Question: What has helped you lose a significant amount of weight? (besides gastric bypass or lap band? I need to lose 60 pounds or more. I am exersizing to an areobics video 3 times a week and drinking 40-60 oz of water a day and I am trying to eat smaller portions and quit snacking. I'm not sure if I have lost yet but it has only been 4 days.
Answer: eating lots of watery foods like lettuce cucumber tomatoes soups eat as many as you like you will not pile on weight but will feel satisfied cos you are eating lots
Question: Is the Lap Band surgery For Me? So I'm thinking about getting this surgery. I'm a little over 6ft and 307lbs. I've tried doing Exercise every night and I maybe lose 1-2 pounds. Now with the lap band it shrinks your stomach basically. But I don't eat a lot. I do drink a ton of sodas each day. I eat like 3 times a day. The first 2 times something small and then the 3rd time I eat about average. SO can someone tell me if the Lap Band would work for me.
Answer: Hi,
Most likely the Lap Band Surgery will not work for you because :
1. You mentioned that you don't eat a lot
2. Even if you are not eating a lot, you are NOT eating the right stuff.
3. You HAVE to count the calories.
They will make you attend Special Classes on Diet / Nutrition to discuss these factors if you still decide to get the Lap Band Surgery.
Your insurance WILL NOT cover the cost until you have proven that you have made reasonable effort to lose weight through the following :
1. Gone through the Weight Management Program for 3 - 6 months, depending on your insurance plan.
2. Attended at least 6 (on an average) Nutritional Counseling Sessions
3. Gotten Psychiatric Evaluation done
4. Gotten a Sleep Study done to diagnose Sleep Apnea
5. Some hospitals also require you to attend Informative Seminar before they even schedule you for a consultation.
6. They also strongly recommend attending the Support Group Sessions.
Hope this helps in making a sound decision. Good luck !!!
Question: Lap Banding/Drinking liquids? Ok so I have a question about the whole not being able to drink when your eating thing. I've been thinking about the lapbanding to help enable my weight loss, I've read that you cannot drink liquids supposedly an hour before and after you eat a meal as if you do the fullness feeling will not stay as long. Is this true? I always drink with dinner or whatever, whether it be water, juice, soft drinks (bad I know) even if I have water with dinner I am always thirsty, I have always been like this, I usually drink 3 drink bottles a day of water. So how will drinking before/after affect me say I do get it done? Would it be best to maybe drink a little before hand and then eat something and THEN wait an hour just to make sure? Thank you in advance
Answer: I have the Lap Band. I didn't understand this either until my band was tightened. Yeah, you won't want to drink liquids with your food. It's not a good sensation with most foods. Of course, you might need the occasional sip but it won't take you long to figure out you don't want to drink! It hurts terribly.... like a gas pain.
Now my physician just say 15-30 minutes before you eat so that you have an empty pouch. Try to stick with you surgeon's wishes at first and take your concerns to him/her if you can't keep up with you water intake.
Question: About the lap band alcohol.. caffeine how long? I am wanting to get the lap band procedure.. I went to a seminar about it and they said that you can not drink alcohol or caffeine which I am perfectly fine with but my question is.. is the lap band ever supposed to be removed? If not does that mean I can NEVER drink alcohol or caffeine ever again? and also how long does the lap band stay on? If I get to the weight I want to be at can it be removed?
Answer: The lap band is not supposed to be removed.
i have the lap band and i am still able to drink alcohol and caffeine.
carbonated drinks do give me problems. but it just makes you feel like you have to burp alot.... this happens with beer, wine coolers, sodas etc.
when you get to the weight you want to be at, your doctor can adjust the band so do you not continue to drop lbs.
Question: Help, Lap Band, Exercise, Still Can't Lose Weight!? I am Bi-Polar and have taken Prozac, Paxil, Lithium, Depakote, Wellbutrin, Topamax and now am on 75 mg. of Effexor a day. I have went from 135 to 235 in the past few years due to these meds. I had weight loss Lap Band surgery in June and have only lost 20 lbs. I only eat 900 - 1200 calories a day and exercise regularly and drink lots of water. I haven't lost weight in about a month now. I don't know what to do at this point! Help!!!!
Answer: You may need to reevaluate your diet. Even though you've restricted calories, they may not be the "best" calories. Cut out high fats and sugars and go easy on animal products.
Question: Lap-band plus alcohol??? Can I drink alcohol if i have the lapband??? what are the pros and cons of drinking alcohol with the band??
Answer: Before you have any alcohol, kiss everyone there you think is "kiss-able"...That way ou are safe if you decide to have a drink after the lap-band starts.
Is it soon?
Question: Lap band or Bariatric surgerY? I am 62 male and well nourished..5 foot 11 and weigh 290+ pounds..but i tried to get a bariatric sugery a few years ago and i got my dr. ok and even a shrinks report..now i would like to try a lap band as i hear they are less invassive.can a 62 year old man get this procedure on their Bc/Bs insuracne..what is a fair amount of pocket? but can someone my age still get this procedure as i have hypertension, sleep apena and trouble with my feet and knees..my heart is enlarged too..but i just want to know who i could turn to for advice..thank you for any advice pro or con.. i know I should control my food intake and exercise..but sometime we need a crutch too...i don't some for 22 years and I don't drink alchol..
Answer: get the lapband, ive heard great things about it since its removable
Question: Lap Band, Should I do it? I am an 30yr old Mother of a 16month old child. I' ve struggle with my weight my whole life and now I am starting to get really depressed with my appearance. I eat healthy and cut back on salt and sugar, I only drink water but there is no change. I now think surgery is my only choice. Gastric Bypass has way to many risk involved so I think Lap Band is better. Is there any one who's had Lap band surgery and could tell me about it?Or is there anyone who's had Gastric Bypass and could tell me about it?
Answer: First the differences in what you ask. Gastric Bypass is very radical and the procedure is permanent. Basically they sew off / close off the majority of the stomach. It can not be reversed. Any large amounts of food (larger than a 1/2 cup of yogurt) and your body gets rid of it right away. And all exits (front and rear). Proper nutrition is key. You will be taking supplements the rest of your life as well. Please note I know people who have lost 100+ of pounds and gained it back.. How? By drinking their calories in forms of milk shakes. Goes right through your stomach and turns into fat. It can be more difficult to qualify for this surgery. You really need to lost a lot of weight to qualify..
Lapband is not permanent and less invasive - but is no walk in the part. Basically they place a band around the top of your stomach and everytime you eat it feels like you are full. About 8 ounces of yogurt will fill you up. To see what this looks like just go to youtube and search for the word "lap band surgery" and you will se some cool animations. If something goes bad you can have the band removed. My wife had this procedure. Cost - $15k... You need to be around 100 pounds over weight and bmi over 40. They are marketing this procedure all over you should be able to find a free seminar somewhere..
Best of luck
