Natural Allergy Remedies
Question: Are there any natural cat allergy remedies? I am terribly allergic to cats. My eyelids feel like sandpaper, I get 'asthma', my throat and mouth feel very painful, nose stuffy but running, the skin on my hands even gets sore. My girls love them and also, their sitter(our neighbor) has one inside. This is tearing me up! Meds don't even touch it. I've tried it all, even prescriptions.
Answer: If you've been to an Allergist and taken their advise and it's still not working for you... don't have a cat in your house. your girls will understand and be more mindful of washing their hands after playing with the neighbor's cat (before they expose you). there are always sacrifices we make for our children, but this should not be one of them.
Question: Natural Allergy Remedies...? I live in Spain and have am really allergic to dust...I have been really really tired and because I play volleyball am limited to the kinds of medication I can take. Are the natural remedies effective? Also, I can get it cleared by the doctor if I need to but are injections the strongest remedies? My eyes are really sensitive and I eat and sleep well but wake up with an achy body and exhausted...any recommendations?
Answer: In Prescription For Natural Cures, Balch & Stengler discuss homeopathic remedies, Vitamin C 3-5 grams a day, Nettles 300-500 mg daily, MSM 3-5 grams daily, Quercetin 1000 mg 3 times daily, and Essential Fatty Acids (Flaxseed or Fish oils). There is also good advice on life style and other approaches. Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine (Murray & Pizzorno). Bioflavinoids, esp. Pycnogenol, have also been found to help some people.
Good luck!
Question: What are some natural allergy remedies?
Answer: Low levels of fellow antioxidant vitamin E have also been associated with asthma and wheezing illnesses.8 It appears gamma-tocopherols protect against inflammatory cell recruitment and alterations to tissue cells during an allergen challenge;9 allergy treatment with these tocopherols also appears to block certain inflammatory immune cells from entering the airspace and tissue of the lungs, nose and sinuses.10
Combining antioxidant ingredients provides additional relief. Combining vitamins C and E with antioxidant N-acetyl cysteine (NAC) appears to inhibits pollen-induced airway inflammation by blocking ragweed oxidases that induce oxidative stress and inflammation in the airways.11 On its own, NAC reduces mucus viscosity, protects against lung tissue damage and stymies phagocyte burst during an allergic reaction.12,13,14
Mixed antioxidant carotenoids, including lycopene, might also be beneficial, according to scientists. Research has shown high plasma carotenoid concentrations, reflecting a diet high in fruits and vegetables, offers protection from allergic rhinitis in adults.15
In the world of minerals, magnesium is a bronchodilator and antihistamine; and zinc supplementation may reduce inflammatory cells in the airway.16
Quercetin is another anti-allergy antioxidant, due to its antihistamine and anti-inflammatory properties. This flavonoid controls mast cell activities and allergy symptoms, inhibiting the release of histamine in nasal mucosa of allergic patients.17,18
While micronutrients and antioxidants are expected allergy fighters, some specialty natural products should also be in the relief inventory. A study in 2007 found glucomannan can suppress allergy symptoms by taming specific IgE response.19 Prebiotic oligosaccharide lactosucrose also suppresses IgE during allergy challenge, including allergen-specific IgE.20 The fatty acid conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) reduces allergy symptoms such as sneezing by affecting various immune parameters.21 David Cai, Ph.D., senior scientist, Cognis Health and Nutrition, said his team, which has focused mainly on the weight management benefits of CLA, has only recently begun to explore the product’s allergy relieving abilities, finding promising preliminary results.
One of the biggest arsenals of natural remedies for allergies is comprised of botanicals, which also curtail inflammation and histamine release from mast cells.
Licorice root and its primary ingredient glycrrhizin (glycrrhetinic acid) offer anti-inflammatory activities, in addition to thwarting IgE in allergic reactions.22,23 Similarly, sculletaria (also known as skullcap, or Huang Qin in Chinese medicine) can restrict inflammatory cytokine production and release by mast cells.24
Against histamine, the flavonoids in pine bark extract (as Pycnogenol) block release of this allergy troublemaker from mast cells, possibly better than a known pharmacological histamine inhibitor.25 In the same manner, butterbur extract has proven adept at blocking histamine release by IgE-sensitized mast cells,26 relieving allergy symptoms as effectively as drugs, but without the drowsy side effects.27
There are countless herbal remedies with long histories of use and some preliminary research against allergic reactions and related symptoms. Such is the case with the herbs in Aller Leaf, an anti-allergy formula from Gaia Herbs. This combination features stinging nettles, which may inhibit inflammatory cytokines; turmeric, which contains anti-inflammatory curcumin; goldenseal, for respiratory mucosal function; the astringent herbs bayberry and yarrow flower, which also have anti-inflammatory properties; and the aforementioned anti-inflammatory skullcap.
Another popular herbal combination is the product Aller-7, a formula from InterHealth USA found in products from various manufacturers, including Natural Factors. InterHealth explained Aller-7 is a “patented blend of seven standardized herbal extracts clinically tested to promote respiratory health and normal breathing seasonally and all year round.” Its roster of herbs—Indian gooseberry or amla (Phyllanthus emblica); Harda or Haritaki (Terminalia chebulat); Bedda Nut Tree (Terminalia bellerica); Indian walnut (Albizia lebbeck); ginger root (Zingiber officinale); Indian long pepper (Piper longum); and black pepper (Piper nigrum)—help to clear airways, stabilize mast cells and neutralize free radicals associated with allergy and respiratory distress.
A 2004 clinical trial showed Aller-7 improved various immune and allergic parameters, helping more than 90 percent of allergic rhinitis subjects greatly reduce symptoms, including runny nose, sneezing and nasal congestion.28
While a good diet rich in veggies and fruits may help maintain a healthy immune system year-round, the crux of the allergy products market, even in natural health channels, is symptom-focused. Addressing symptoms is what Sinus and Ear formula from Clear Products aims to do, with its combination of herbal and homeopathic remedies.
Stas Ozog, herbalist and acupuncturist, said he formulated this product to address the congestion that’s built up during an allergic reaction. “Sinus and Ear is a very mild product, but it helps dry up and get rid of congestion,” he said. “The herbs in the formula have antibacterial and antiviral properties.”
Based on a 2,000-year-old oriental medicine formula, Clear Sinus and Ear includes licorice, scutellaria, cinnamon, angelica, ginger and magnolia, but it also features homeopathic ingredients such as Pulsatilla, Euphorbium, Hepar Sulphuricum and Calcarea Carbonica. “In school, I remember being told we were not supposed to combine the two modalities (herbs and homeopathy), but we found much better synergistic effects in combining them in this product,” Ozog said.
Homeopathy has an abundance of natural medicines to offer allergy sufferers. Alissa Gould, public relations manager for Boiron Products, explained homeopathy treats allergy symptoms by providing a plant, mineral or animal component that can produce the same symptoms the allergic person is experiencing. In the case of runny nose or eyes, chopping a red onion produces the same result, so red onion (Allium cepa) in diluted form is among homeopathic medicines for these allergy symptoms.
Borion offers a large number of such remedies. They each contain one medicinal ingredient and, being regulated as drugs—not as supplements—they list active ingredients and dosage on the tubes. The homeopathic section has a chart which can be used by consumers to match their symptoms with the right medicines that can help. There is even a take-home version of this chart.
For newcomers to homeopathic medicine, Boiron offers an Allergy Care Kit, which features three of the most popular medicines for common symptoms—Apis mellifica for itchiness, Galphimia glauca for hay fever and Histaminum hydrochloricum for general allergy symptoms. However, the more daring and experienced can try Sabadil, a six-medicine combination featuring red onion, as well as Ambrosia artemisiaefolia for coughing, HPUS for hay fever, Euphrasia officinalis for irritated eyes, Sabadilla for sneezing, Solidago virgaurea for nasal discharge and Histaminum for general allergy relief.
Gould recommended consumers take any homeopathic remedy at the first sign of symptoms. “These homeopathic medicines are safe, do not cause drowsiness and will not interact with supplements or drugs, so there is no reason to hesitate in taking them at the first sign of symptoms,” she urged.
A. Vogel also offers homeopathic products for allergy concerns. Pollinosan spray targets hay fever, sneezing, watery eyes and allergic reaction with seven medicines, including Ammi visnaga, Aralia racemosa, Cardiospermum, Luffa operculata, Okoubaka, Larrea mexicana and Galphimia glauca. Swiss research showed allergic rhinitis or pollinosis patients taking this formula experienced a reduction in evening symptoms, although morning symptoms remained unchanged.29 Researchers reported the remedy was well tolerated.
The company’s sinusitis formulation, Sinna Nasal Spray, might also help allergy suffers, as the four homeopathic medicines involved—Hydrastis canadensis, Kali bichromicum, Lemna minor and Luffa operculata—attend to sinus congestion and inflammation, both which can occur in allergic reactions. In fact, a 2003 Swiss trial found this sinus spray reduced symptoms in both acute and chronic sinusitis patients.30
Allergies are widespread, disrupting the daily lives of many Americans. According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, allergies and asthma affect six times more Americans than cancer, striking one out of every four Americans. While the sheer scope of potential allergens is hard to plan for, the mechanism of allergic reaction in the body, especially in the upper respiratory system, is becoming more well-known. Natural products can help address these mechanisms and the mediators that choreograph the inflammation and symptoms allergies spawn.
Question: Natural allergy remedies? What are some natural (non-OTC or prescription) antihistamines? We all know cranberries are good for urine tract, vitamin C is good for most colds... what can you eat or drink that's good for allergies?
Answer: One of the most important remedies is having a strong immune system. If your immune system is strong you have a better chance of lessening the effects of the allergy, apple cider vinegar is supposed to be one of the most versatile allergy remedy as well as good for a lot of other things!
Honey is also supposed to be a natural antihistamine as well as an immune booster.
As well drinking certain teas, such as rooibos, it is good for your immune system as well as a natural antihistamine, i actually drink it and it does work. And it also suppresses your appetite.
Avoidance of allergens if at all possible, but most of the time that is pretty difficult.

Question: Does anyone have Natural remedies for sinus and allergy problems?
Answer: Go to herbalhealer.com they have homeopathic drops for specific allergies and regions of the country if your talking about hay fever etc.
Question: Does anyone know of any natural remedies for dog allergies? My labrador has horrible allergies. She's been to the vet several times and has been treated with everything from steriod and cortizone shots to antibiotics to shampoos and anti-itch creams and more. While the symptoms will go away after each treatment, they always come back and I hate to see her suffering from constant itching (not to mention all the treatments are getting ridiculously expensive and they don't solve the problem long-term anyway). Does anyone have any suggestions or know of any homopathic/natural remedies? Thanks.
Answer: Grain free diet. If this scratching is all year round than he is allergic to his food. Up to 70% of dogs are allergic to corn, wheat, soy and/or barley. Go to your local natural pet food store and tell them you need a good grain free diet. Try to find wellness core reduced fat if you can as most grain free diets can cause a lab to gain weight (most food can cause a lab to gain). If the problem continues get some Azmira Aller'G. This is a natural supplement that will help his system to defend itself. If you smoke please do so outside as this can also cause these problems. If the problems continue after six weeks than add some salmon oil or flax-seed oil to her food. this will get her omega 3/6 balance out. Good luck!
Question: What causes the Dust allergy and what are narural remedies? Would like to know the food groups that will reduce the dust allergy or any natural remedies
Answer: From what I was told at the Allergy doctor's office, dust, pollens, etc. contain microscopic "things" that irritate your nasal sinuses. Your body wakes up, investigates, and for some reason overreacts. It is like the snot switch is turned on but someone forgets how to turn off.
One of the holistic remedies I was told to try was to eat a tablespoon of honey every day. Buy the honey from a farmer who is within a 5 mile radius of your home. This might help a bit with pollens but I doubt it will help you much with dust.
Get rid of anything with feathers. Vacuum your mattress every week (or at least every two weeks) using a vacuum with a Hepa Filter. Remove all carpets. Use your A/C and don't open your windows. Change the A/C filter at least monthly. Wear a face mask when you dust and dust your house every day. Wash all your bedding weekly and use a little bleach. Vacuum your seating daily with a vacuum that has a Hepa filter. Always use a mattress pad so you can wash that with bleach weekly. Buy pillows that are made for people with allergies.
Or, go see an allergist, find out exactly what you're allergic to, and commit yourself to the regime of shots that will help you get over whatever it is you're allergic to.
Oh, forgot to mention. For some people, dairy products can make you more snotty if you're having an allergy fit.
Question: Any allergy remedies for cats? I have 5 cats, and 2 of them have allergies. They have to go to vet every once in a while and get cortizon shots. Those shots are taking its toll on their kidneys. Does any body know of any natural remedies to help my cats? Any ideas or suggestions would be very helpfull. Thank you.
Answer: I might want to see another vet, specifically an allergist. Cortizone only treats symptoms and does not get to the root of the problem/
Question: Hello, does anyone here know of natural remedies for allergies? Really need feedback! :)? In the summertime, my allergies (to pollen, dust, and other such allergens) come out full force, and just recently, I suffered a bad cold stemming from it. I would LOVE some feedback on possible natural remedies to treat my allergies. Thanks!
Answer: Raw honey...it REALLY helps.
Question: Do homeopathic allergy remedies really work? I've tried all the rest, now I'm looking at natural remedies.
Answer: If Homeopathic Remedies don't work. What medicines do ? There are no better remedy them Homeopathy in treating allergies. FIZZ seems to have taken ZINC on pathological symptoms not according to his symptoms but those of the ailment and got the opposite results.
Homeopathic remedies taken according to a patients symptoms from head to toes work like magic if you take them like FIZZ did it will create the symptoms which the medicine is supposed to cure. Its the law of similars, what can create a certain set of symptoms will always cure the same symptoms created by any reason. You cannot take homeopathic remedies like what is the best Homeopathic remedy for headache and the answer is what are given according to your symptoms ! There are too many medicines for headaches in Homeopathy you can't take them all, can you ? The one prescribed according to your symptoms is the one which will cure you. That's what Homeopathic Medication is all about, Treat the patient and you will succeed treat the disease and when you fail. don't blame Homeopathic Medicine, blame yourself :-) !
For a Homeopathic prescription your complete symptoms from head to your toes are to be taken in consideration , to get to the most appropriate medicine for you not your disease.

Question: Natural remedies from allergies? I have itchy, watery eyes and keep sneezing. It's too late for anything to bloom.... Any natural remedies you know of? Thanks.
Answer: yoga will be useful ,
Question: Natural Remedies for Mold and Dustmite Allergies? Unlike others who are pollen sensitive, my worst allergies are to mold and dustmites. I work hard to keep my environment clean, but living in classic old city buildings means there is only so much I can do. I'm tired of walking around with red eyes and "allergy shiners" all the time. Nothing has really worked since they took Seldane off the market... Benadryl gives some relief but makes me so drowsy I can hardly work. Can't afford expensive allergy shots,, don't want to do cortisone, and I would rather use natural remedies anyway. Help?
Answer: I've taken Seldane a couple of times and it was possibly the most potent antihistamine I've ever had. My methods for allergy relief now are quite different. I work as a doctor of chiropractic/clinical kinesiologist in a sports chiropractic clinic. I use a very specific allergy elimination technique that works great as well as get rid of any inflammation in the nervous system and bugs in your gut to assist with allergies of all types. If I knew what area you lived in I could possibly advise you on where to go/who to see. In any case, I can't vouch for other doctors' results but two websites may be of interest/help: see below. Allergies are nothing more than your brain's inability to recognize certain substances properly and respond properly. Acupuncture, kinesiology, nutrition, etc...are all good for relieving allergy symptoms and get to the root of the problem.
Question: Anybody got suggestions for a natural remedies for allergies? I suffer with chemical senstivity problem. Allegra helps but makes me very sleepy.
Answer: To the first guy; if lavender oil works for that, that would be awesome! No idea if it's true though.
Anyhow, first thing first. Odds are your allergies have a root cause of something in your diet. If you do a diet where you cut stuff out one at a time, you will probably be able to isolate what the problem is (there are a few common causes, Naturopathy has a whole school of thought devoted to this.)
Second, it's quite possible you are really just being overexposed to toxins in your environment (say you're downwind from a plant), and you really need to get away from the source.
Third, Homeopathy specifically deals with the problem you are detailing here, so it might be wise to try and find a good homeopath.
Finally, a while back I was seen a very times by an alternative chiropractor who would test people to find if there system was weak or allergic to certain substances (based off of energy stuff), and then fix it at an energy level. When I first was introduced to this concept, I thought it was reallllllllllllllllllllly dumb. However, after seeing it consistently work, I changed sides. If your problem is severe you might want to look into doing that.
So basically, those are all the out of the box effective suggestion I could think of for you. Hope they help!
