No2

Question: What is the difference between the NO2 and Denitrification tests? Okay, so I'm doing "unknowns" for microbiology and in my lab book we have a test listed under Nitrate Reduction but the tests our teacher is asking us to perform are called NO2 and Denitrification. Could anyone explain these to me and how the differ???

Answer: It's likely the same thing. I think what your teacher wants is NO2- (nitrite) test. There's a link to a test below. Denitrification is the process of reduction of the oxidation state of nitrogen from +5 (nitrate), to +3 (nitrite), then to +2 (nitrogen oxide), +1 dinitrogen oxide) and finally 0 (nitrogen gas). Certain bacteria use N2 to make ammonia, but this is a different story. Hope it helps
