Nutrition Label
Question: Why do alcoholic drinks lack a Nutrition Label? Please refrain from responding with the hackneyed joke that "alcohol has no nutrition!"
Is the consumption of alcohol not regulated by the FDA? If not, then why doesn't whatever agency with the power to do so not require a nutrition label?
Answer: Because the label would be blank.
Question: Why does the Total Fat not add up right on the nutrition label? Okay, so I am reading this book on fats, carbohydrates, and proteins. But, when I am looking at some of the nutrition labels on products I have at home, they don't add up. For example, a package of Uncle Ben's Spanish Style rice has the following fat breakdown on the nutrition label:
Total Fat 4g
Saturated Fat 0g
Trans Fat 0g
So does that mean all 4 grams of fat come from Polyunsaturated and Monounsaturated fats? And if so, why aren't they listed there?
Answer: Hey there. From the label itself, we can't tell the proportion of poly's and mono's. The only logical conclusion one can come to is that the total amount of fat is 4 grams, and that none of it is saturated or trans. Those 4 grams may be entirely polyunsaturated, or a combination of poly and mono. The answer here lies in the fact that food manufacturers aren't required to break down fat content by the poly's and monounsaturateds. The "Total Fat / Saturated Fat / Trans Fat" format appears to be standard, and more importantly, it's what's mandated by the US Food and Drug Administration - so, they're just being consistent with the FDA's requirement for nutritional labels (usually food manufacturers do only what is absolutely necessary and legally required of them - surprise, surprise). The FDA's most recent addition to the requirement was the disclosure of trans fats. Personally, I get around this minor dilemma by just keeping a good knowledge of the types of fats contained in the majority of foods I eat regularly. For example, I don't need a label to tell me that the fats in macadamia nuts are almost entirely monounsaturated, because it's precisely the reason I'm eating them to start with. Good luck, and enjoy that Spanish Style rice!
Question: What does it mean when a food product says it has no sugar, but sugar is listed on the nutrition label? Usually when I find food that claims that it is "sugar free," I look on the nutrition label and find that it does have sugar in it. However, sugar (fructose, dextrose, glucose, corn syrup...etc) isnt listed in the ingredients. Does thIs mean the sugar on the nutrition label is reffering to natural sugar or added (processed) sugar?
Answer: It means that the sugar content is less than .5 percent, regardless of the source. Any ingredient that is .5 percent or less can be counted as "zero", thus making it "sugar free". "No added sugar" means just that and it can contain a good deal of "natural" sugar. Examples are "no added sugar" jams and jellies. The only sugar (which is quite a bit in some cases) comes from the fruit, not from other ingredients such as sugar, syrups, etc.

Question: How do you find the number of calories in a food with no nutrition label? I have a vegan chocolate cake I bought from Whole Foods but it has no nutrition label, just the weight of the whole thing and a list of the ingredients.
I know ingredients are listed by weight in descending order, so is there anyway to get a rough estimate of how many calories are in the cake?
Edit: Must also say that I Googled the name of the cake + 'calories', but to no avail, I couldn't find it listed..
Answer: Try looking it up online. There are many sites that have lists of foods with nutritional info. Try googling the name of the food with the word "calories"
Question: If a nutrition label does not list minerals or micronutrients does that mean the food does not contain them? I was comparing the nutrition labels of Quaker crushed-oats and some organic crushed-oats. The organic oats' label showed minerals or micronutrients but Quaker oats did not. So does that mean the Quaker oats doesn't have any?
Answer: Everything should be listed but if you still have questions do call the company and they can answer your other questions.
Question: How do you create a nutrition label? I created a beverage product at home and I don't know what to put on the nutrition label. I know what I need to find... I just don't know how to tell how many calories, etc, vitamins, etc. there are in my beverage product. Where do you go to find that information? Help please!
Answer: First your going to have to know exactly what your ingredients are and the precise amounts of each. It won't be that hard but you will have to do a bit of math. Here's a great website that gives you the exact calorie and nutrients in just about any type of food or ingredient. Click On http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp/search/
Question: How come alcohol doesn't have a nutrition label? I can go to the grocery store and find a nutrition lable on any food or beverage, except for alcohol. I mean, even a bottle of water has a nutrition label on the back, and it lists a "0" in all of the categories! The most simple and obious response is "well, there isn't any nutrition in alcohol." This may be true, but don't you think people might want to know how many calories are in a shot of Jack, or how many carbs are in a shot of Captain? Right now, the only nutritional guidance I can get from a bottle of booze is "don't drink and drive" and "don't drink while pregnant."
Answer: As another answerer informs you there are a few countries that do require nutrition labeling on booze. And indeed, in the USA there is a small category where it is also required: wines (including hard cider) of 6.9% alcohol or less. Do to an oversight in the post-Prohibition US Federal alcohol law these wound up under FDA, not BATF, regulations. You can check it out when you next go to your favorite alcoholic beverage retailer.
By the way, many alcoholic beverages, especially some wines
and rich malt beverages, do have notable nutrition.
Question: How can I create my own Nutrition Label? I want to create a nutrition label to put on the back of my business card, and I'm having trouble finding an application to help me do it. Anyone know where I can find one?
Answer: Just make it yourself. I did one for Sara Lee Bread a while ago from scratch, If I remember right the font is just Ariel and Ariel Black with different point size lines. There should be plenty out there to copy from, I have never ran into a program that does it for you.
Question: How can I tell when a food item is healthy by reading the nutrition label? IN other words, how do I read a nutrition label? haha
thanks in advance :D
Answer: Ok.
Lets See here.
Total Fat.
Is how much fat [[ if you know what fat is]] is in a certain food per serving and what percentage it is of your daily fat recommending based on a 2000 calorie diet.
And its pretty much like that for everything else on the label.
Watch out for high levels of these...
Cholesterol [[artery cloggers]]
Sodium [[Sodium is an necessary mineral for the human body. Without it, nerves and muscles would cease to function, the absorption of major nutrients would be impaired, and the body would not be able to maintain adequate water and mineral balance.]]
Sugars [[ Fatting]]
Alot is good when it comes to...
Protein [[ Makes you stronger]]]
Potassium
Fiber [[ Improves heart health and makes you Poop]]
Vitamins [[ good for you]]
Minerals [[ good for you]]
With Vitamins and minerals 10% of a daily serving is considered a good source.
Well thats all I got.
Hope you could understand it.
Unless you cant read.

Question: Energy drink nutrition label? Why do most energy drinks lack a nutrition label? i thought by law they had to show how much of the ingredients are used.
Energy drinks like monster, amp, nos full throttle, red bull all don't have nutrition facts printed on them.
Answer: Energy Drinks are often have loads of sugar, which nobody needs. "Energy drinks are rip-offs," said Bruce Silverglade , legal director of the Center for Science in the Public Interest, a Washington, D.C.-based consumer watchdog group that has been trying, unsuccessfully, to get the US Food and Drug Administration to force manufacturers to list the amount of caffeine on product labels.
I think that is the reason why they dont tell you whats in these drinks.
The FDA does not regulate caffeine in energy drinks, some of which, contain huge amounts of caffeine: a popular one has 280 mg in an 8.4-ounce serving.. compare that to 100 mg per 6 ounces in coffee.
I am using a product called ReVIVE by nuriche which has an energy enhancing combination of over 175 natural ingredients, including 70+ live, whole food and fresh raw juice concentrates which is condensed into a vegetable gelatin capsule for easy digestion.
It works really well and you dont get the crash as you do from energy drinks and soda loaded with caffeine.
