Question: What type of athlete would benefit from omega-3 fatty acids? Endurance or power athlete?
Answer: Since it helps with the heart, both would benefit.
I use it as an endurance athlete (5k+), and I know power (sprinters) athletes who use it too.
Question: how many of us bipolars are finding benefit with omega 3 fatty acids? am currently on 1000mg but ive read that 2000mg is optimal.
Answer: They definitely do help, along with a range of other nutritional supplements and dietary choices. I've found a huge amount of helpful information in books written by a guy called Patrick Holford. His books include The Optimum Nutrition Bible, Optimum Nutrition for the Mind, and Natural Highs. I'm type 2 bipolar so I spend most of my time towards the depressed end of the spectrum, and I've managed to drag myself up from what seemed like the bowels of hell on more than one occasion just by following the advice in his books. I'm doing it right now, actually. Three weeks ago I was suicidal - now I'm doing well.
I highly recommend you read his books - they're great! Good luck :)

Question: Does anyone know if the tuna served at subway has a good source of omega-3? I usually like to buy this sub from subway, but I really don't feel any benefits I read about when it comes to tuna's omega-3 co-relation. There's tons of research supporting the health benefits of omega-3 on the brain. What should I supplement my diet with in order to gain the most of the benefits that omega-3 or any "brain food" has to offer?
Answer: I would say the tuna has a good source of omega-3,at the end of the day its fish.i have started taking omega-3 supplements (capsules) i dont feel any different though and i have been taking them for a month.Pilchards is also a good source apparently.
Question: Does eating fiber help with weight loss? And, what's the benefit of taking Omega 3?
Answer: Fiber does help in a sense but its main purpose is to keep you regular (which is always good) good for your digestive system. But most foods that have fiber in them are good for you. And omega 3 has alot of beneficials. Keeps your blood from clotting, helps in weight loss(lowers amount of lipids) helps prevent cancer cell growth ect.
Question: What are the benefit of Omega-3?
Answer: There are a huge number of studies that are providing at least some evidence for the value of omega-3 fatty acids in treatment of epilepsy, prevention of Alzheimer's disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes, and heart disease, among other conditions. So far the research is just suggestive, but this appears to be a very promising nutrient.
Question: Should schools in the UK be empowered to hand out Omega-3 suppliments to students? Jamie Oliver has got parents and schools talking about feeding children with good stuff to help them grow. The benefits of Omega-3 are well documented, should schools be dispensing this type of thing free of charge to pupils?
Answer: They better make sure the children don't have any allergies to fish. I know someone who took it and almost died because of fish allergy . There is fish oil in them.
Question: Have you tried the omega 3 diet? I've heard about it around 2 years ago. Then recently there's been so much information about the benefits of omega 3. Just want to know who here has actually benefitted from it and how did you start with the omega 3 diet?
From my understanding it's not really a "diet", which is good. I just want to be healthy and more energized...any tips? I want to get into the omega 3 regimen, sounds good. Thank you!
Answer: omega 3 ? They're a nutritional element that first caught researchers' attention about 20 years ago – and what they discovered could have health benefits for anyone worried about a healthy heart.
In the early 1980s, studies showed that the Inuit had low rates of heart disease despite their high-fat diet rich in fish. It turns out the omega 3 fatty acids in the fish may be what protects their hearts, along with other health benefits.
Benefits of Omega 3 Fatty Acids in Heart Disease and Cholesterol
Omega 3 fatty acids are poly-unsaturated fatty acids. Studies show that a diet rich in omega 3 fatty acids may help lower triglycerides and increase HDL cholesterol (the good cholesterol). Omega 3 fatty acids may also act as an anticoagulant to prevent blood from clotting. Several other studies also suggest that these fatty acids may help lower high blood pressure.
Potential Benefits of Omega 3 Fatty Acids in Alzheimer's
Omega 3 fatty acids may protect against the accumulation in the body of a protein believed to be linked to Alzheimer's disease, according to the results of a new animal study published in the March 2005 issue of The Journal of Neuroscience. This study specifically investigated one particular kind of omega 3 fatty acids – Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), and the results are encouraging.
Omega 3: Fish or Plant?
With the increasing popularity of vegetarian diets and mounting fears about mercury and PCBs in seafood, people often ask about using flax oil (which contains alpha-linolenic acids – or ALA) instead of fish oil.
Our bodies can convert ALA into eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) – the beneficial elements of omega 3– but the conversion process is slow. In addition, q high concentration of ALA (as present in flax oil pills) has been linked to higher risk of prostate cancer by some early research. Until more is known, men may be safest to choose fish oil for heart-healthy omega 3s instead of plant-sourced ALA.
Where to find Omega 3 fatty acids?
All fish contain omega 3 fatty acids, but they are more concentrated in fatty fish such as mackerel, salmon, sardines and herring. The American Heart Association recommends eating fish at least 2 times a week.
Many commercial food products, such as bread and baked goods, yogurt and infant formula are now fortified with omega 3 fatty acids.
Other sources of omega 3s include:
Green leafy vegetables
Soy and tofu
Nuts and seeds like almonds, walnuts, pine nuts, and flax seed
Cooking oils such as flax seed oil, canola oil, and soybean oil (for more information, read The Best Cooking Oils)
Some eggs, such as omega-3 enhanced eggs
Caution:....
Cod liver oil is not a good source of omega 3 acids. It may cause toxicity in excess amount due to its high levels of Vitamin A and Vitamin D.
Men are best to avoid flax oil pills until more is known about flax's potential link with prostate cancer.
i had tried it...it is good for me and my family too..
so how about you try this soon...i hope we will get healthier and more
regards,
kae
Question: Is it okay to take Omega 3 supplement AND use flax seed oil? I don't want to overdo it, but i do want to get my benefits from omega 3. I read that people can develop thyroid issues from having too much...?
Answer: I've never heard of flaxseed causing any health problems but mega doses of anything could potentially cause problems. This might be one to run past your family doctor next visit. I take (ground not the oil) flaxseed daily but not o3 supplements in any other form..is there a reason you'd be taking so much O3? Just curious...
Question: Will I benefit from taking evening primrose oil or flaxseed oil if I'm already taking Omega 3 supplements? I already take fish oil supplements (Nordic Naturals ProOmega) which has 650 mg EPA & 450 mg DHA (Omega 3's) and also a tiny bit of Oleic acid (Omega 9).
Answer: Absolutely! Evening Primrose Oil has Omega-6 GLA, which is good for skin health and helping to balance out a woman's hormones (which helps a LOT of women with their "monthly issues"). Flaxseed Oil has Omega-3 ALA, which has some added benefits for cardiovascular and heart health among other things... it's similar benefits to Fish Oil, but you can take both for added effect.
Question: Omega 3 and olive oil? I've been taking a fish oil supplement and one of the doctors I work with told me to watch the fish oil because of possible mercury contamination. My question is, when I'm on the go, would it be ok for me to just take a tsp. of olive oil in the morning to get the omega 3 benefits? Will it give me G.I. distress?
yall are full of info....thanks
Answer: Olive Oil is fine but not very high in Omega 3. Pretty much any vinegarette you would put on your salad contains raw olive oil and does nothing to contribute to GI distress.
Question: Does baby benefit from me consuming extra folic acid or omega 3 while nursing? I asked this question earlier, but obviously people misunderstood what I was asking...
I am nursing my 2wk old and was told to continue my prenatal vitamin. The thing is, I have 2 different ones that I alternated during pregnancy. One was a better multivitamin and has a better variety of vitamins. The other really doesn't have much besides the B vitamins, calcium, iron, a ton of folic acid, and a bunch of omega 3 in it. The one that has more vitamins has no folic acid and no omega 3. I'm trying to figure out if I should contiune to alternate the vitamins, or if I should just take the one that has more vitamins. If the baby gets the extra benefits of the extra folic acid and omega 3 then I want to continue to alternate, but if not I'd like to just take the one that has the better vitamin variety...
(My last question just got answers saying that baby will get all of the vitamins he needs from me... I know that. I'm wondering if he will benefit from the extra folic acid and omega 3)
Answer: This is the best information I have found on diet re: pregnancy and lactating. I follow it as well as I can and everyone, I'm not kidding - lactation specialist, friends, strangers, doctors, comment on
1. How alert my baby was when she was newborn.
2. That she was holding her head up early.
2. How strong she is. How rubust she looks, and healthy.

As far as the folic acid, my doctor said that this is a necessary vitamin, mainly in the first stages of pregnancy only to help develope the nuro-pathways. I don't think it could hurt at this point though.
Fats are extremelty important. And, I know zinc is also. I take a vitamin and an extra zink tab, along with cod liver oil capsules on the side as well.
Question: Would carnivores benefit if farm raised animals were fed a healthy diet of olives and omega-3 supplements?
Answer: likely to some degree. this would be through the process of bioaccumulation
Question: 10 points best answer: Fish oil omega 3 benefits? Without the consultancy of the doctor, I bought the omega-3 fish oil..they are yellow-dirty white capsule enveloped in a transparent cover...(they look like the antibiotic in STRUCTURE)...I thought they are important for the brain...but when I read the uses, it is said that it is good for heart diseases, lowering blood pressure, regulating cholesterol, without mentioning anything related to the brain although when I googled, i realized that Omega-3 is a brain food..
Should I take them without any consultancy?? and are they useful for the brain?? I'm 17 years old.
Answer: Omega 3's are involved in an anti-inflammatory cascade. Inflammation is a component of a lot of heart diseases and blood pressure issues. 60% of the dry weight of the brain is made of essential fats and half of that is omega 3. That makes it very important in brain health.
The supplement you bought sounds a little suspect, however. A good test to see if your fish oil is not rancid is the following: take a couple capsules and stick them in the freezer. If they freeze solid, they are no good and are rancid. If they are still slushy and aren't frozen solid, they are good.
This is important because a rancid fish oil is basically a large fat soluble free radical which is not good and is actually more damaging than helpful. The omega 3's are in the algae that the deep water fish eat and and they keep the fish from freezing stiff. That is why you don't want them to freeze solid in the freezer.
I use Nordic naturals in my practice and they usually pass the test. If you are burping up fish taste, chances are the oil is rancid and your body is trying to get rid of it....hope it helps
