I suggest looking at the GNC website.
as far as foods with high omega 3 content: Walnuts, flaxseeds, beans, fish, olive oil and winter squash constitute part of the cornucopia of foods that will provide you with concentrated sources of omega-3 fats.
Curlyness is not really affected by food consumption. It is determined by genetics
Question: India:Sources of Iron and Omega 3 for vegetarian? I want to turn vegetarian. I'm already anaemic. I've already started to eat some iron-rich food like dates and prunes. But I'm unsure of omega 3 sources. In the internet, the explanation is kinda complicated...'ALA omega' what nots!
What should I eat? Do tofu and soya stuff really help?
Advice from long-time vegetarian and medical practitioners perhaps. I'm asking in the India section cos' I think most hindus are vegetarian. Please help me suggest western food alternatives cos' I'm not Indian and not in India. But I think hindus might have useful experiences.
Thanks!
Answer: I'm vegetarian and have always been so. My haemoglobin stays around 12.5 on a regular Indian diet without any extra caution. But it is true that one should be mindful especially since the vegetarian sources of iron are absorbed even less. Green leafy vegetables, pomogranates and banana are good iron sources for vegetarians (and that's mentioning just one benefit).
Tofu and soyabean are EXCELLENT sources of protein. Also, you don't have to miss dairy products or even eggs. (Vegans often absolutely need supplementation). Vitamin B12 is entirely missing from a 'vegan' diet. Have only egg white and give the 'yolk' a miss simply because it's extremely unhealthy. A vegetarian diet is truly complete. The only thing is that you have to make the extra effort to ensure it's wholesome, especially since it's not the norm where you're living so easy availabilty maybe an issue. Also, while a typical Indian 'thaali' is quite well balanced, Indian style of cooking especially the one practised in restaurants destroys the nutrients big time and uses a lot of oil. The Westerners tend to cook their vegetables much less (like steam or microwave a little) or even have them raw as in salad, which is actually far..far healthier.
Anyway, asking a local dietician maybe a better idea. Just sort it all out once and it'll be easier from there.
ALSO since you've been on a typical western non-vegetarian diet (from what I understand) and are already anemic, you would do better to have a doctor determine the cause of anemia first since 'nutritional' iron deficiency should not arise in a well fed non-vegetarian.

Question: Omega-3 sources during pregnancy? I've heard too much contradicting information on flaxseed, and I'm tired of salmon/fish. Are there other ideas?

Answer: I've been taking these Multi Oil supplements from GNC for a few years.
http://www.drugstore.com/qxp156599_333181_sespider/gnc_preventive_nutrition/multi_oil_dietary_supplement.htm
It has a blend of Fish Body Oil, Wheat Germ Oil, Evening Primrose Oil, Borage Oil, Black Currant Oil, Flaxseed Oil, Vitamin E, Rosemary Leaf Extract and couple other ingredients you'll find on the website.
I've never liked fish much, and I've read much about how omega 3, 6 & 9 fats are very beneficial. Also, when I was TTC I asked an employee there about the possiblity of mercury content, and they re-assured me (as well as showing me a pamphlet) that the levels were next to none, and safe during pregnancy and TTC. They are also lemon scented/flavored so they don't stink and as the GNC lady says "you don't burp up fish oil smell." LOL. Never had that problem, but these are the only oil tablets I've ever taken, and I continue to take them during my pregnancy.
My OB is aware and doesn't object.
Hope that helps!
Question: Do you know of any other sources of Omega -3 aside from my favorite oats? I've read some examples here: http://www.cardiologyjournal.info/
Answer: Flaxseed oil/ground, seed oil, hempseed, canola (rapeseed), walnuts, algae, & tofu.
Question: Vegetarian sources of Omega-3 fatty acids? I am a vegetarian, and I suffer from depression. I have read from numerous sources that Omega-3 fatty acids are especially helpful in treating depression, but the main source of Omega-3 seems to be fish. I am not willing "bend the rules". Are there any vegetarian sources for Omega-3 fatty acids?
Answer: Soy products and flax seeds and flax oil contain stacks of omega 3 and there is also some in walnuts but unfortunately these are all ALA of which only about 5 to 10% is metabolised or converted to DHA which is the beneficial one. Fish oil contains DHA and EPA in the DHA/EPA mix in the proportions of 60% EPA and 40% DHA.
St John's Wort is supposed to be good for anxiety and depression.
Question: Can omega 3 from some sources or all sources be bad for some people?
Answer: Yes I think if you had an allergy to fish then fish oil would be harmful. If you are getting your omega 3 from eating fish in your diet there can be some harm if the fish themselves have been exposed to mercury and you eat too much of it. Some fish oil capsules will have mercury free listed on the label.
Question: need free good information on Omega 3 & 9 sources & costs? what is the best bang for the buck - high EPA and DHA for lowest cost? probably need serveral sources in case one ormore recommendations aren't available in my area.. thanks
Answer: Fish oil (DHA plus EPA) can be obtained in small and large containers and the prices vary. The larger containers are better value for money and the odourless fish oil costs a bit more. You will have to inspect the shelves at the major supermarkets and health stores.
There is lots of omega 3 in soy products, flax seeds and flax oil and a bit in walnuts but this omega 3 is ALA which does not have the brain benefits of DHA although 5 to 10% of this ALA is actually metabolised to the brain beneficial DHA.
Question: Does wall nut and salmon fish contains same amounts of omega 3?What are other rich sources of omega-3?`?
Answer: I don't know if walnuts and salmon contain the SAME amounts, but for sure they both have some.
Other great sources are other fish, like tuna, other nuts, and flax seed.
Question: Which fish are rich in Omega 3? I realy enjoy salmon but what other fish do you know of that has Omega 3? Sources appreciated. Best Answer guaranteed within 2 days. Thanks.
You guys are the best, I'm going to find it difficult to pick BA...
Answer: The source of Omega 3 fatty acids in fish is the grey area of flesh found just beneath the skin of dark-fleshed fish such as salmon, sardines, herring, mahi mahi, etc. So if you want to eat fish for the omega 3 content, you should eat dark-fleshed fish with the skin still on. White fish contain some Omega 3 fatty acids, but much less. A skinless whitefish filet will have little to no omega 3 fatty acids, as will commercially prepared fish sticks. You are better off eating a piece of pickled herring than a box of fish sticks or a can of tuna. At least those still have the skin on them.
Question: What are some good sources of omega 3 fatty acids? Besides fish
Answer: flax seed, eggs, walnuts, pecans, meat, milk and cheese and salmon
