Phytonutrients
Question: I've been hearing a lot about phytonutrients and all the health benefits. Is it BS or is it worth trying? More specifically I heard about this Acai berry which is supposed to be packed with these phytonutrients. I want to know if its real or just another money making gimick that preys on health conscious.
Answer: There really is something to it. For the real Answer, go to http://www.newstarget.com and read through all of it.
Question: What is the comparative nutritional value (including fiber and phytonutrients) of sweet potatoes and yam?
Answer: You can look up all the nutritional information on tons of different foods at www.calorieking.com. It is a free site and it is awesome!
Question: Phytonutrients in vegetables affected by cooking? What vegetables have the highest levels of phytonutrients and are the health boosting effects of these nutrients affected by cooking?
Answer: There are so many phytochemicals that it's hard to determine which ones have the "most" overall. Rather, the best strategy is to eat a wide variety of vegetables to obtain some from each category of phytochemicals. For example, spinach and collards are highest in lutein, whereas carrots and sweet potatoes have a lot of beta-carotene. A general rule of thumb is to eat a variety of fruits and vegetables of different colors - dark green, orange or red, blue, etc. A healthy diet rich in fresh fruits and vegetables will always provide enough essential nutrients to maintain good health; there is no need to plan for specific nutrients.
I am not aware of any research as to how cooking affects these compounds specifically. The only concern I know of regarding nutrient values and cooking vegetables relates to loss of some water-soluble vitamins (like vitamin C) after boiling vegetables in water, particularly for a long time. Minimal cooking such as steaming, light sauteing, etc., is perfectly acceptable. You don't need to eat vegetables raw, and loss of nutrients from most forms of cooking is minor unless you absolutely boil your vegetables to death.
Although one interesting thing to consider...some research shows that organic vegetables are higher in phytochemicals, probably since these evolved in part as strategies to resist pests and infections. So if you're really concerned, go organic.
This site gives information about phytochemicals and which types of fruits and vegetables are high in each category:

Question: who did the research about Oranges' Healing Phytonutrients ?
Answer: James Lind (1716 in Edinburgh – 1794 in Gosport) was the first who proved that citrus fruits ( oranges and lemons ) cured scurvy.
A. Szent-Györgyi was the first isolating ascorbic acid ( 1928 ) and found in 1933 its identity with vitamin C.
Hope that is the answer you are looking for!
Question: What are foods high in phytonutrients?
Answer: those high in anti oxidants
Question: What are the differents type of Phytonutrients? And how do thye work in our bodies ??? ~:(
thx ^^
Answer: Phytonutrients or phytochemicals.
Phyto is the Greek word for "light" or plant.
Interesting as phytochemicals do not form on plants unless they are exposed to the sun. Their purpose is to protect the seeds of the plant for the next generation of plants.
Not until 1996, News Week Magazine published an article "Better Than Vitamins" because phytochemicals snuff out cancer before it begins.
Phytochemicals are the pigment that forms on the fruit and vegetable's of plants and we eat them so that they do what vitamins and minerals cannot do. They go inside the cell and tote out the toxins and free radicals, thereby reversing the aging process.
Unfortunately, we live in the age of green harvesting. We pick our fruits and vegetables before they ripen so that they have a shelf life... but, in affect, we are lacking in phytochemicals.
In 1900, cancer was all but rare, as the number one cause of death was tuberculosis and your chances of dying from a bullet were far greater than getting cancer.
In the 1970's, Nixon declared the war on cancer as it was 1 in 10, and now cancer has become the number one killer... The "treament" of cancer second to the Oil Industry as our largest GNP in the world.
The number one death in children is cancer, so it's not because we are living longer.
So, here is the answer. Cancer, heart disease and auto immune disease has been scientifically proven to be nothing more than a nutritional deficiency. We lost our symbiotic relationship with plant foods due to modern day farming practices.
Eat right...? Well, don't abandon eating right, because eating wrong and taking supplements won't work either, but you have to do both.
Supplement with a phytochemical food product that has GMP's, (Good Manufacturing Practices) that have been proven to work in human blood groups in vivo and in vitro blood tests, meaning Research and Development through studies.
You have to supplement because grazing like a cow on our modern day grocery vegetables isn't enough anymore.

Question: Is Beta-glucan Phytonutrients or micro nutrient?
Answer: Beta glucan is a plant derived food stuff thus making it a phytonutrient. It is not really a micronutrient because it isn't needed in small quantities (like a vitamin or mineral).
Question: I read somewhere that food cooked in a microwave has less nutrition than food cooked in an oven. True? Also less anti-oxidents and phytonutrients. I may have read it in Readers Digest
Answer: Microwaves simply move water molecules which create friction which causes heat, since the energy has to be released in the form of heat or light. In this case its heat. Unfortunatly, heat destroys enzymes, protiens, amino acids, and other nutrients in food. So, in summary, the microwave doesnt really ruin it, its the heat. Same goes for boiling, steaming, frying, etc.

Question: Macro nutrient, Micro nutrient and Phytonutrients... can someone Pls explain..?
Answer: Nutrients you need in large quantities are called macronutrients, and micronutrients are needed in small quantities. Phytonutrients are ones that come front plants, the phyto refers to the fact that they harvest energy from the sun.

Question: Growing and taking wheat grass? I do not have a way to juice the wheat grass, but I want to start taking it.? I am well aware of all the wonderful benifits wheat grass posseses; vast amount of chlorophyll, lowering the risk of cardiovascular problems, providing vitamins, pack with phytonutrients...but I do not know how to take it. I have fresh blades of grass growing on my patio. How much should one take, athletic, rock climber, yoga girl...
Answer: Well getting grass from outside to eat it is rather risky. For one thing you don't know what's been on that grass - like dog urine or worm eggs.
As for wheat grass being good for you all I can say is that it seems to work well for beef cattle - right up until the time they are slaughtered for meat.
Question: Which packaged salads are the best? ? Well regarding my last questions and all those fancy ingredients like phytonutrients, antioxidants etc ... what is the best salad for your health?
What about other ingredients? Phytonutrients etc. - I usually take the fresh express salads since walmart is my first choice. plus it seems that their salads cover all the important ingredients.
Answer: Look for the most colorful, esp if you want antioxidants. Broccoli slaw is very healthy - a cup even has a good amount of protein. As for leaves, I think spinach is highest in nutrients.
I always look for nuts & berries. You could buy flaxseed separately and sprinkle it on for extra nutrition. Some grocers sell salad confetti (chopped up bits of veggies) to make it easier to get more in your salad since it's expensive for them to put very much besides leaves in a bagged salad. (they tend to skimp!)
My all-time favorite is Trader Joe's baby spinach mix- it has cranberries, pecans, bleu cheese & raspberry dressing. Mmmm,,,!
Question: Can sugar be removed from juice? This would allow ingestion of lots of juice, benefitting from the phytonutrients, without the adverse effects of large amounts of sugar. It would also allow people on sugar restricted diets to benefit from phytonutrients. I would think it could be done with pharma/food processing equipment of some sort.
Answer: Tropicana makes a low-sugar orange juice.
Question: does anybody know a drink called monavie? MONAVIE IS a premier acai blend that suppose to help deliver the phytonutrients and antioxidants you need to maintian a healthy and active lifestyle it says it help with a couple of problem you may something like that so what i want to know does it work or is this just anyother scam?
Answer: Yes, I know this drink and I am jacked on the juice.
It is very simple
you need fruit
you get 19 fruits in this juice
not saying that this juice is to do away with your normal diet of fruit, but to add to your diet, fruit that can be difficult to find.
Yes, I have heard many wonderful things that this juice is doing for people (and not just people I don't know).
I don't believe everything I hear so I have given this juice to people I know and trust and still heard alot about what this juice does for people.
It does seem unbelieveable and it will, until you give it to a few people you know and trust.
I wont try to sell this online because for one the company doesn't allow it and for two you don't know me and I don't know you.
The company also doesn't allow it in health food stores.
The customer base is the distributors.
Most people that drink the juice become a distributor.

Question: exceptional parent magazine and autism article? has anyone read the recent exceptional parent magazine's article on a family with three autistic children? the article is called finding their way. in the article it mentions how the children were put on a casin and gluten free diet and given cod liver oil, vitamin B12, and glyconutrients and phytonutrients supplements, these supplements had a tremendously profound effect on the autistic kids. they went from not talking at all to talking and the began passing their occupational and physical therapy goals as well as thier ABA goals it goes on to say that their awarness and understanding improved as well. my question is : what are these phytonutrients and glyconutrients? ( the article gives some explaination) are they pills or vitamins? where can I purchase these? I already know about the B12 and fish oil. but I have never heard or the phyto and glyconutrients. and if you have an autistic or adhd child and have not read this article, then get a copy of it or better yet subcribe to it .
Answer: I have heard of this and it's very controversial. My son has Aspergers. It's on the autistic spectrum. His doctor is on staff at a major teaching hospital where the chief of psychiatry specializes in autism. I asked whether or not she had heard of it and if it would help. She said that their was no research to support it.
However, improving anyone's diet has to be of some help. It certainly can't hurt.
Glyconutrients are:
Fucose (not to be mistaken for fructose)
Galactose
Glucose
Mannose
N-acetylgalactosamine (GalNAc)
N-acetylglucosamine (GlcNAc)
N-acetylneuraminic acid (Neu5Ac)
Xylose
Phytonutrients are fruits and vegetables.
I'm sure you could find these at any health food store. Some of the better ones have an advisor that works where the supplements are.
