Supplementation
Question: Can i get pregnant when my husband is on thyroid supplementation? My husband was recently diagnosed to be hypothyroid and has been prescribed oral thyroid hormone supplementation.
My question is, since we are planning to start a family now, Is it safe for me to conceive?
Answer: yes, if he has the energy to have sex with you. Hypothyroidism is Myxedema, he will have fatigue, decrease libido and he will have intolerance to cold. His sperm will not be affected but he can't have sex with you because he will be weak, low blood pressure and therefore he can't have sex with you.
Question: What is the best way to take pro-biotic supplementation? What is the best way to take pro-biotic supplementation?
1- Activia Dannon?
2- Kefir ?
3- Pills for pharmacy?
4- Others suggestions?
Answer: Any probiotic sold as a supplement will have a listing on the container, but when you're looking at food sources like those, the best way would be to take them with other foods so the acidity in your stomach isn't as strong (so the probiotics can survive longer).
That being said, typically the highest potency of probiotics will come in a pill. A cup of yogurt will often have much less than 1 billion viable organisms, but a pill of probiotics will commonly have 3-5 billion viable organisms or more. Because of that, you'll get much more benefit (like recovering from antibiotics) from a pill, but yogurt and kefir are still good options to have in your diet if you like the taste. You would have to eat yogurt and kefir as most of your diet to get that many probiotic organisms, but that would be for the maximum benefit... you'll still get good maintenance support from yogurt and kefir.
Good luck and I hope I helped!
Question: What are common sources of copper supplementation for horses? looking to supplement copper soures only. Need feed sources for copper supplementation.
Already feeding a good vitamin - I am looking for a sole source of copper supplementation only :)
I do not use salt/mineral licks because my IR horse can not have exccess access to them. Salt is supplied daily in the feed. What is the powder your are speaking of? I work with Zinpro minerals direct, but can not get a chelated form of copper from them.
My horses already get a vitamin - however my black friesians need a higher amount of copper in their diet - I do understad the risks associated with copper and know the amounts to feed - it is just very important to me to feed a chelated form of the mineral rather than raw form. :) Thanks for the feedback!
Answer: You can buy copper oxide in powder form. Your feed store may not have it on hand, but they should be able to order it for you. most of the time this is not needed though. If you are feeding a commercial bagged feed in proper ammounts, your horses copper requirement should be met even if your horse is on pasture and local hay. Rather than supplimentation, i would shop around for a feed with a higher percentage of copper; there are so many blends out there that ther has to be one that will meet your needs. If you do need to suppliment pure copper, please be very careful, as this mineral can be lethal in too lare a quantity.
Question: Does a planted aquarium need oxygen supplementation during the night? I have a 20 gallon aquarium with 6 fish and one large plant. During the day there is plenty of oxygen in the water from the plant's photosynthesis, but do I need to turn on an aerator during the night?
Answer: Your aquarium needs a source of mild current so that the oxygenated water on the surface can mix with the oxygen poor water of the depths. It is necessary to maintain a slight current in order to prevent the water from stagnating. Stagnant, unmoving water is unhealthy for both humans and fish because bad bacteria can grow in it. A plant alone is not enough to circulate the water in your tank.
Think about the human body. You breathe with your lungs, just like the plant breathes for the tank. But without blood flow, the oxygen in your lungs would never reach the tissues in the rest of your body. Your poor feet would die and fall off. The aquarium is much the same. A slight current that disturbs the surface of the water is needed for vital gas exchange. You have your choice between method of water circulation, of course. You can have a pump, a filter, an aerator, a bubbler, an airstone, a waterfall, or whatever method you want. Just make sure that all of the water in the aquarium is moving for several hours a day.
For your situation, I recommend a quiet waterfall filter. Here is a picture of the schematics for one such machine. (see below) They are very quiet and make little to no noise if set up properly. Filling the water up to the level of the outpour tray eliminates splashing sounds. The water in the aquarium gets circulated with such a machine, and if you want, you can stick a carbon filter pad inside the waterfall filter machine and it will also boost your water quality.

If your aerator is quiet and doesn't keep you awake at night then yes, by all means, go ahead and use it. Oxygenating your water more will help your fish, as long as they're able to sleep, too (not too strong of a current).
Question: What effect, if any, has selenium supplementation, had on your health, and well being? Obviously, this question is directed to those, who have engaged in selenium supplementation.
Answer: Selenium has a few effects. The primary is that it is a required nutrient for daily nutrition... if you go without it for long enough, it's bad for you.
As far as what it does when you take it, it's a very good antioxidant so it helps protect practically everything in your whole body. It also has overall benefits for Cardiovascular, Prostate, and Immune system health. Most people that take it (oftentimes in a multivitamin, but many take it separately) have less of a chance of getting sick.
One important thing to note is that it is a mineral, so taking too much of it can build up in your system and cause problems. The common dosage size is typically 200 mcg.

Question: How can I improve my memory ( with dance choreography) using nutritional supplementation? I am returning to dance classes after many years, and it is really difficult for me to remember the choreography. Is there any supplement (s) that will help me keep up and remember the combinations easier? Is Ginko Biloba a good choice? If you have any ideas that would be appreicated. Thanks!
Answer: Ginko Bilboa is really good for memory but another one that is good for memory is fish oil.
Question: Does Creatine supplementation make much of a difference? Can you describe? Performance differences and size differences? Does it do anything to the mind/brain?
Answer: Creatine does nothing for the mind as far as i know but it will bloat your muscles. You will gain the initial five pounds within a week of loading. after that the rest should be pure gains. You should get massive strength gains if you are taking mono hydrate. It shouldn't change endurance, just strength.
Question: What type of information or assessment tools can you use to determine whether supplementation is necessary? Joann is a 48 year old woman who works full time and is the parent of two teenagers. She is 5ft, 9 inches tall and currently weighs 175lb. In the past 2 yrs, she has gained 10lb. Her recent blood glucose test results were borderline high, and her family has a history of diabetes and cancer. She recently completed a course of antibiotics for an ear infection and has been experiencing mood swings and night sweats, which she thinks may be related to pre- menopause. Joanne has called to make an appointment for dietary counselling and has expressed interest in getting more information about how diet can help her maintain her health, manage her risk for diabetes and cancer, and prevent any further weight gain. Her typical meals are as follows: a bagel, coffee and orange juice for breakfast, a sandwich with ham, cheese, lettuce, tomatoe and mayonnaise and fat -free cookies for lunch; and pasta with chicken and carrots, a green salad with blue cheese dressing and a small slice of cake or dish of ice-cream for dinner. Her beverages include diet colas, and her snacks are usually rice cakes or popcorn. She has no regular exercise program.
Answer: Before starting any supplements or HRT, I would try:
Eliminate artificial sweeteners (diet soda included!)
Increase plain water intake
Eliminate processed foods (lunch meat, cheeses etc..)
Take a good multi-vitamin daily
Try herbal tea geared towards women's health
As far as an exercise program goes, start small! Choose a parking spot furthest away from the store/work, and take the stairs instead of elevators. Baby steps will keep you from being too overwhelmed by all the changes. Good luck!
Question: What are the Pros and Cons of vitamin and mineral supplementation? I would really like to know. I mean, we all know vitamins are good for you. But, I always heard that eating too many vitamins can poison or make you sick. What's the truth?
Answer: Very few vitamins aren't water soluable. You will simply pee them out. However, I just read an article that there are impurities in vitamins such as LEAD. It is best to go with a well-known brand such as Centrum. The problem with vitamins is that they aren't inspected by FDA. However, unless you eat a very balanced strict diet, you may benefit from taking a multi-vitamin.
Question: How do you know how many grams of protein are in each scoop of whey protein supplementation? I am using whey protein and i want to know how many grams of protein are in each scoop. It says that i should just use one scoop of this stuff and mix it with water, but i think it is better to get enough protein according to your weight
Answer: Uh read the thing. Also most people well recommend that while whey protien shakes can be used to surgoate meals that it is normally best to get protien through eating actual meals
Question: Why do snakes need vitamin a supplementation in their diet? Have been trying to find this everywhere and just can't get any info on it! Any would be greatly appreciated:) thanks xx
Answer: They don't usually need to be given any supplements as long as they are fed on a rodent diet, they get all the nutrients and vitamins they need from the rodents body and bones. Most other reptiles are fed a diet that is not as balanced as it would be in the wild, therefore they need supplements. luckily snakes shouldn't have to be given any unless they are on a fish diet, or directed otherwise by your vet.
Question: Which of the following statements is representative of vitamin supplementation practices? a. Most people who take supplements consume a poor diet
b. Most people should take supplements daily because of the great difficulty in obtaining the needed amounts from food
c. People who have low energy intakes or are pregnant are at risk for developing deficiencies and may benefit from supplementation
d. People should take supplements daily because nutrition surveys in the U.S. and Canada have detected deficiencies in some population groups
Answer: This question is, at best, incomplete and cannot be answered.
You need to know of who the statements is supposed to be representative.
In addition, the statements refer to different groups. a & b refer to "most people", c refers to "People who have low energy", and d refers to "some population groups"
Question: Would Creatine supplementation work for me; would it be safe? If I take 250mg only in my post workout shake? I am not going to load on it or anything.
1) Will I still get a reduced lung capacity or side effects from that small of an amount? I know Creatine can do that to people.
2) Will it (250mg post workout) make any difference with my lifting and muscle gaining? Should I even bother if I am going to to it this way?
Should I even consider taking Creatine?
Answer: Creatine is scientificly proven to be safe to use. i use it all the time and have done for years. it has no side effects. try taking it 30 mins before work out for best use. i take 5g a day every day. don't believe when people say it's bad for you. go on bodybuilding forums and do a little research and you'll find thats it's perfectly safe. if it wasnt they wouldn't be allowed to sell it in shops. as long as you don't have stupid amounts of it you'll be fine. just stick to 5g a day. it will help in your strength and also improve on muscle size.
