Question: What can I use instead of tomato juice, or how can I make my own? My husband found a Beef Soup recipe and asked me to make it for dinner. It calls for 6 cups of tomato juice (I'm cutting the recipe in half, I'm only feeding two people), but I forgot to put tomato juice on my grocery list. I have tomato sauce and tomato paste. Is there anything I can do with either of them to make tomato juice?
Answer: 1 cup tomato juice: substitute 1/2 cup tomato sauce and 1/2 cup water
Question: How do I make tomato paste from tomato sauce? I am making sloppy joes and I realized I have a 6oz can of tomato sauce, not tomato paste. Can I make the sauce into tomato paste? If so, how?
Answer: Put it in a pan and on the lowest possible flame or heat setting, let it simmer uncovered until it's as thick as you want it to be. Freeze what you don't use right away.
Question: What is the tastiest tomato plant I can grow in a pot? I have a very productive "patio tomato plant" but the tomatoes
arent much better tasting than store bought. besides cherry tomatoes. what tomato plant produces big red tomatos with that awsome homegrown fresh taste, that I can grow in a pot?
Answer: Those hybrids aren't tasty. Try a "Tiny Tim" heirloom tomato. They do awesome in pots. Unless you aren't turned on by their small size...
You can grow a tomato plant in a pot very well, if you use a 2 gal pot, give it bone meal and fish emulsion, trim off the suckers and leaved that do not hold buds on, and lots of sun.
Potasium and bone meal will keep the plant's roots very strong, and the plant shorter altogether. Easy on the nitrogen!
Question: Can I make tomato sauce with tomato juice as the base tomato ingredient? I am out of tomato paste and puree (and can't make it to the market) . Will the juice thicken if cooked long enough? If so, any idea how long it will take? Could I use the crock pot?
Answer: It's just thinner than puree. Add the seasonings you usually add but at the end of cooking add grated cheese to the sauce to help thicken. You can also cook a raw potato in the sauce for less acid and it will also help thicken it (peel the potato)
Question: Can you substitute tomato soup for tomato paste? I'm making vegetable soup but don't have any tomato paste. Can I use canned tomato soup mix instead? How much would I use?
I'm not using a mix, i'm making it from scratch.
I have diced tomatoes but those are going in the soup as an ingredient.
Answer: Yes you can, I do this all the time. Nothing slows me down in the kitchen at my age!
You didn't say how much soup you were making so I would just say "experiment"...add half the can of soup, stir well, give it a taste test. if you think you'd want more tomato taste then that...add the rest.
Most veggie soup recipes (with a tomato base) are very flexible when it comes to how much of a veggie to add.
You can usually add as much as double the amount of a vegetable called for without messing the taste up.
Spice amounts are another story. Better increase or decrease those with caution.
Question: What is the difference between tomato sauce and tomato paste? Is there a difference? The recipe calls for 1 cup of tomato sauce, does that mean I use tomato paste (which I have) or should I get some "tomato sauce"? I hope this makes the question very precise, in hopes of a precise answer.
Answer: Yeah you can substitute. The difference between tomato sauce and paste is that sauce is thinner and the paste is a concentrated form of tomato sauce. So what I would do is 1/2 cup of tomato paste and 1/2 cup of hot water and mix together. That should get you the consistency of tomato sauce. If its thicker than you want, water it down to your liking. Hope this helps!
Question: Whats the difference between tomato paste and double concentrated tomato paste? I bought a tube of AMORE DOUBLE CONCENTRATED TOMATO PASTE. With recipes that call for "1 teaspoon tomato paste", will this be the same?
Answer: Tomato paste usually comes in 2 varieties:
double
triple
so the double is the normal one, just use it as it is.
Question: How many tomato sprouts spell trouble? Today I noticed that two tomatoes I had lying around on my kitchen table had a substantial number of sprouted seeds, most with little green leaves, and a few seeds that had sprouted all the way through the skin of the tomato. Fascinated with all things sprouted, I ate both tomatoes (the sprouts were extremely tasty). I felt bloated all day and had moderate diarrhea. Later on, I remembered that all the parts of the tomato plant except the tomatoes themselves are poisonous. Just out of curiosity, how many sprouts would have caused serious problems?
Aw, come on you guys. The tomatoes were fine. Minus the sprouts, they were just on the path to being sun dried tomatoes. No rotting. My apartment is just really warm during the day when I'm not there, so prime environment for growing certain sprouts, apparently.
Answer: How the heck long have those tomatoes been on your kitchen table??? Good Grief, Charley Brown!!!!
Use produce within a month of buying. If the seeds sprouted, they must have had a favorable environment... rotted tomato???
Get an enema.
Question: How much tomato sauce can be made out of paste? I have a small can of tomato paste, and I was wondering how much sauce can be made out of it. I just need a little bit extra sauce to add onto what I already have made, but all I have in the pantry is tomato paste (and I know I can go to the store, but I'd rather use what's on hand).
Thanks!
Answer: Add chicken stock(Or water) about 1/4 cup at a time until it's the consistency you want, then add spices to taste (Oregano, basil, garlic, onion, salt, red pepper, etc...)
Question: What's the difference between tomato paste and tomato sauce ? As far as I can tell, tomato paste is tomato sauce, and tomate sauce is tomato paste . Is there any difference between the two ? Why would two grocery items that are so much alike be available ? Why don't supermarkets stick to one or the other ?
Answer: "Tomato paste, or tomato concentrate, consists of tomatoes that have been cooked for several hours, strained and reduced to a thick, rich concentrate.
Tomato puree consists of tomatoes that have been cooked briefly and strained, resulting in a thick liquid.
Tomato sauce is a somewhat thinner tomato puree, and may include seasonings and other flavorings so that it is ready to be used in other dishes or as a base for other sauces. "
Question: Why does my homemade tomato sauce come out tasting bitter and how can that be prevented? I take several tomatos and put them in a blender, then drain the liquid and throw away the pulp formed by the seeds and tomato skin. I then boil the liquid portion in a pot for about 40 mins or until it thickens and becomes a paste. Before adding any seasoning I taste it and it has a bit of a bitter taste - nothing overwhelming but I could do without it. Is it normal for tomato sauce to have a bitter taste? How could this be prevented next time when I make a homemade tomato sauce?
I don't eat sugar, so if you can, please suggest something other than sugar that's effective. Thank you.
Answer: Add a bit of sugar to it...
Question: Can I plant a tomato plant in a bag and hang it somewhere? I have 40 tomato plants ,but I live in an apartment. Which mean I don't have place to plant. I want to have my tomato plants hanged around my little yard . if possible, will they have tomatoes?
Answer: I've never used a bag, but I do use buckets. I first used a hanging flower basket of medium size, but I found that I can't keep it moist enough. I switched to a five gallon bucket, and it's perfect. These plants do better than those that I plant in the ground. The plant actually hangs upside down from the bottom of the bucket, and you can then plant flowers or herbs in the top. Remember to water regularly, and use a thick layer of mulch to retain moisture.
