Question: What paint is most toxic to the environment? I'm doing a project on paint and I'm having trouble deciding what type of paint to specifically do. I need to discuss how the paint is toxic to humans, how it is toxic to the environment, how to recycle this paint, and how recycling this paint has a positive environmental impact. It seems like oil-based paint is pretty toxic when compared to latex, but can I get more specific than that? I just need to know what type of paint to start doing research on. Thank you!
Answer: All of them, regular paints are bad and need a haz mat to clean up spills--remember there was one on rt. 128 years ago and it halted traffic for hours. Just try looking for a paint with the cheapest regular retail cost.
The best paints are called Low V.O.C. and you can google that. They are not as flammable and have no lead dryers in them . I have severe chemical allergies and can be in a room that's painted with these paints a couple of hours later and be OK.
You could also try looking in google under paints-toxic or try the EPA site to find out more about paints. They might list them by the amount of volatile organic compounds in them which is what makes paint so toxic. In general, the government does not allow harmful lead paints anymore.
Also talk to Sherwin Williams or Benjamin Moore as they have the non-toxic kind and would be able to tell you more about the poor quality paints that they refuse to sell.
Good luck....
Question: Is Copper Toxic? My husband wants to put a patinaed copper skin on our range hood and island.? I think this would look awesome since it would match the bronze drawer pulls. I have heard that the patina can be toxic. Or is just drinking from copper pipes that is bad? Advice please.
Answer: Any metal ingested in a large enough quantity is toxic, which applies to many other substances, also.
Drinking from copper pipes is not bad. The problem was/is the lead-based solder used in many of them.
P.S. bronze also contains copper and how many pennies do you handle a day without poisoning yourself yet?
Question: What Non Toxic Product, do you use to clean your floors, that is safe to use around dogs? I have Ceramic Floors. I have tried using Vinegar and Water and it leaves bad streaks. I can't use Bleach, because I get Severe Migraines and the Bleach triggers them. What do you recommend, that I can use that is Non-Toxic around dogs, and will not leave bad streaks on my floors? Any suggestions welcome! Thanks!
Answer: I use white distilledVinegar & hot water. This was reccomended by the guy who put in my hardwoods. It's a "food" product, safe enough to consume & it really does a nice job. Also, a gallon is only around $1 - $2 & when you mix approximately 1/2c per gallon of water...it's super cheap, too!
***Oops, I just read your question closer...streaks, huh?
How wet is your mop?(I wring mine out really good) What kind of mop? (I use a Velleda, it's got machine washable / replaceable head) I've really never noticed streaks. HMMM....
Good luck!

Question: How can toxic and corrosive hydrogen chloride gas be dispersed or dealt with to prevent it fr harming humans? How can toxic and corrosive hydrogen chloride gas be dispersed or dealt with to prevent it fr harming humans?
Pls note that there is a rather large amount of gas to be dealt with. Some of the solutions I've come across include using water, and vapour suppression foam (which I have no idea what it is). Pls HELP!
Answer: Diluting it with water may help. One way is to use a scrubber (a system designed to remove water soluable gases and vapors from air using water). If it is designed properly, this will effectively remove the HCl gas from the air however, you now have HCl in water, still acidic and corrosive. Now that it is in water, it is easier to chemically neutrallize the acid. Of course, instead of throwing it away, you might be able to capture the HCl and reuse it in your process (saving raw matl cost and dealing with a toxic waste product at the same time). You can do some simple calculations to determine how much base is needed to neutrallize the amount of HCl you have. This chemical reaction will generate heat so you need to be prepared for that.
The chemistry of waste water handling is well known. Do some research on scrubbers and acid nuetrallization systems.
Question: How to go from black to toxic red without going blonde? I'm planning on dying my hair a toxic red before school starts, and some of my friends have known people who have gone toxic red without going blonde. But never know how to. I want to know the secret, so dying my hair can be easy and quick before school starts again.
Answer: Honestly getting anything from black to a lighter colour without allowing it to grow out or bleaching it out is near impossible. There is a brand of hairdye called Smart Colour that somehow lightens and colours though honestly I don't understand how it works and the colour isn't very bright or long lasting.
Your best bet is to just bleach it once and then dye over it, you can do all this within a day so you don't need to be seen with blonde/gingery hair. Highly recommend Special Effects hairdyes over Manic Panic just because the colours are so much brighter and longer lasting.
Hope this helps.
Question: What are some non toxic at home remedies to kill ants? I have ants by my front door on the inside of my house. I don't want to spray chemicals and can't put down the ant traps due to a new puppy we have. I would hate for her to get into something toxic. Is there any at home remedy that I can mix up and put down to help my problem?
Answer: Soapy water kills most kinds of insects, but you have to spray it directly on them.
Question: Does adding artificial sweetener to hair dye eliminate the toxic smell side effects of the dye? I add artificial sweetener to my hair dye that contains bleach to eliminate the toxic smell.
Does adding sweetener eliminate the toxic effects of the hair dye? Should I cover my dyed hair with the cap as long as the dye is processing to prevent the toxic effects from the smell? The instructions on the container doesn't mention anything about adding sweetener - it is something I've seen hair stylists do.
Answer: . artificial sweetener: "...Acesulfame Potassium (K) was approved for use by the FDA as a safe artificial sweetener in July, l988. It is a derivative of acetoacetic acid.
Aspartame, a dipeptide of aspartic acid and a methyl ester of phenylalanine, is approved for use in pharmaceutical products .
Saccharin is an O-toluene sulfonamide derivative and causes similar dermatologic reactions. Cross-sensitivity with sulfonamides has been demonstrated.
Splenda, also known as sucralose, is an artificial sweetener, which is a chlorinated sucrose derivative.
The manufacturer claims that the chlorine added to sucralose is similar to the chlorine atom in the salt (NaCl) molecule." ...
..... Many of these 'sweeters' contain weak acids, sulfer and chlorine which react with the dye's ammonia . Some sweetners, especially when aplied to the head, can cause headaches and dizziness so be careful .
There are a few odor-less dyes out there . Use them.
Question: What kind of non toxic houseplants do well in a bathroom? I've read that tropical houseplants do well in bathrooms. My bathroom is fairly brigh. I am planning on having the plant in ahanging basket, so I'd prefer a plant that trails or hangs down & is non toxic.
What would be a good starter bathroom plant for a novice plant keeper/gardner?
Are their any that flower of have a nice fragrance?
Answer: Depends on the light available to keep the plant alive. They don't grow in dark and a light bulb won't do.
Pothos is a good starter plant and rewarding. Spider plants are fun. Also hoya but can be slow and not as full as the other plants, but very forgiving. Brighter lights you have various Wandering Jews.
Question: are there any non-toxic ways to get rid of fleas in the home? we have pets, but none of them are indoor animals. i tried bombing the house last week, (used 3 bombs at once), but they are still around. looking for something non-toxic cause it was a big pain to wash everything all over again.
Answer: You need to do several things. It will be a big pain in the rear but once it's done you'll be rid of those blasted things! You need to bomb the house with something that works for a long period of time and that kills all the flea cycles. I would also get Frontline Plus for any cat or dog that you have. This stuff is fantastic. You should also see about spraying your yard with an bug/insect killer. You can find that at Home Depot. Make sure that it lists fleas on the label. And try to do all these things together (same week). You may have to spray the yard again in a few weeks depending on the product you choose. Here is a website with the house bombing stuff and Frontline Plus.

Question: How do you feel about toxic levels of Barium being found in Chem Trails? These Chem trails are done by our government, over U.S cities, and have been linked with sickness. Our government may be trying to reduce the population. What do you think? Also toxic levels of Barium and Arsenic were also found in them.
Answer: "Our government may be trying to reduce the population"
Really?
Maybe they should try some more conventional methods like providing free contraceptives, abortion and sterilisation?
