Vitamin C Consumption
Question: Is this too much consumption of Vitamin C? A full glass of milk in the morning and a full glass of orange juice per day? is that allot?
And what are the harmful effect of too much vitamin C
Answer: That would not be considered a harmful amount of vitamin C. The upper limit is 2000 mg per day. Exceeding this could cause diarrhea and GI upset.
Question: What does very high consumption of vitamin C mean? I've had a really bad cold for weeks and visited the chemist last week. She gave me a decongestant nasal spray and asked if I felt "run down" or tired. Told her that I'm feeling very tired all the time and she recommended a Vitamin C supplement - got a box of a known brand 1000 mg tablets.
Have been taking them for the past 4 days and I've noticed that the usual change of colour to my urine is not happening - it should turn yellow/orange when your body has had enough and needs to get rid of the excess. I am feeling slightly more energetic - not a lot though!
I've even taken three tablets in one day to see when I get to the stage where the excess is dumped out - and it's not happening.
Can anyone tell me if this is indicative of a problem, or what it may mean, if anything?
Clarification on my question - 1. My chemist didn't recommend the higher dose, and I didn't at any stage suggest that she had, so the comment re my chemist's actions being unacceptable are out of order and would appear to me to be serving some other agenda ......?????
Secondly, it's known that vitamin C is excreted from the body where the body does not need it - i.e. one of the few vitamins where an excess dose is simply dumped through the urine.
Answer: You pharmacist should be hung, drawn a quartered for making this obscenely in appropriate suggestion. There have been a number campaigns over the years by both government and the pharmacists to persuade the public to go to the pharmacy for simple medical advice. I have to say I find this a very dubious suggestion.
The case against the use of very high dose (ie many times the RDA) of any vitamin is unwise as it has now been shown that this gives no advantage and is, in some cases, toxic. A huge amount of work has specifically been done with regard to the supposed advantage of high dose and even very high dose, sometimes called mega dose, vitamin C and it has been clearly shown to be quite worthless. The expression 'enough is as good as a feast' has been clearly demonstrated with this vitamin.
Whilst it is presumed that excess of the water soluble vitamins results simply in this being excreted by the kidneys there have been a number of papers recently suggesting non specific and unexplained reductions in lifespan in patients who consume high dose vitamins, though it is not clear if this is a causal link of something else in the lifestyle or nature of those that take unnecessary vitamin supplements. Certainly in TV and some magazine articles the manufacturers have had to reduce claims for vitamin consumption in the UK. If you watch carefully the small print at the bottom of the TV ads you will now see something like 'MAY be useful to the elderly on restricted diets.' hardly a glowing endorsement, though it is often lost in the colourful scenes above it!
Question: I'm getting conflicting information about vitamin C and kidney stones, please straighten me out!? This one said it causes kidney stones
http://www.walgreens.com/library/contents.jsp?doctype=10&docid=000081
This one said it does not
http://www.newmediaexplorer.org/chris/2005/11/08/excessive_vitamin_c_consumption_does_not_cause_kidney_stones.htm
Answer: The study that says it does is from 2005, the one that says it doesn't dates from 1999.
Moreover, note that the 2005 study mentions risk in *men*; while the 1999 talks about *women*.
A normally balanced diet should already have enough vitamin C so that supplement are not required. But selling that stuff is a multi-billion $ industry. I'd be interested to see if a study shows any benefit from taking vitamin C supplement, as opposed to only risks.
If you don't need it, don't take it.
Question: Do foods rich in vitamin c really lower the potency of Adderall in your system? So I recently was prescribed a low dosage of Adderall XR for my minor case of ADHD. This morning, I was doing a little researching on the web about what foods to take and what not to, and I stumbled upon several forums that specifically forbid vitamin c consumption since apparently it absorbs the Adderall.
Im just wondering if this is actually true, and how long after consuming vitamin c is it okay to take the Adderall?
Like today i ate a banana about 30 mins. before taking my dosage and realized that bananas have lots of vitamin c.
The effect of the Adderall also seems less, but i do not know if its because of vitamin c or because Ive been taking the same mg strength for about a week now. It almost feels like the medicine is barely working.
plz help me resolve this conflict.
Answer: A banana has about 20% of your RDA for vitamin C which is a low amount. You probably had about 15 mg of vitamin C which is not that much. According to the following source you should avoid vitamin c an hour before or 2 hours after taking your medication. [1]
Drugs.com says that you should not take it at the same time. [2] Alternatives to Adderall do exist, and they might be worth your time to research. "A 2003 review of nutrition in the treatment of ADHD found that nutritional factors such as food additives, refined sugars, food sensitivities/allergies and deficiencies of fatty acids have been associated with this disorder." [3]
Fish oil might be an added benefit as a lack of essential fatty acids are thought to be at higher risk of ADHD. [4] Vitamin C in doses of 4000 to 8000mg (divided up during the day), a B-Complex 100, a high quality multi vitamin, niacinamide (500mg to 1500mg)and avoiding sugar and caffeine would no doubt do wonders for your health. [5]
You can start with the lower dosages and work your way up. Of course you would take these supplements away from taking your medication. What would you have to lose?
Question: is it true eating shrimp and vitamin C can be dangerous? I have got information that it's not good to eat shrimps and then consumption Vit. C, because it will produce arsenic in our blood.
Answer: Shrimp that is farm raised is very bad for you. It contains lots of omega 6 inflammatory fatty acids and very little, if any at all, of the omega 3 fatty acids. This is due to the food they feed the shrimp in order to make a profit.
Wild shrimp is very good for you if you are sensitive to iodine. Make sure the shrimp you buy is wild, not farm raised. How you cook it makes a huge difference as well. Don't cook it in vegetable oils of any kind, especially CANOLA or Soybean oils. Those oils break down extremely rapidly and oxidize into trans fats very easily. Cook them in olive oil with a little real butter (especially from grass fed cows and not pasteurized).
Vitamin C is very good for you. Ascorbic Acid is NOT vitamin C as it is being promoted. Ascorbic Acid is a part of the vitamin C complex and if you consume it separately, it depletes your body of minerals and can actually make you deficient in the cofactors that real vitamin C has in it. Ascorbic Acid won't even cure scurvy. It is make believe food.
Neither of these items will produce arsenic in your blood. That is a myth. Aresenic is a necessary trace mineral that we all need, but like most minerals in America today, they have become less and less available in foods due to chemical fertilization and insecticide uses.
We have lost 50% of the antioxidants in our food supply in the last 25 years. It is NOT getting better, but much worse. Oranges you buy in the stores have little to no vitamin C in them now and all you have to do is taste one to realize they are grown in bad soils.
It is becoming more and more difficult to be healthy in America today. Over 53% of ALL Americans are now chronically ill according to a CDC report 2005. In 1905, the same CDC reported that less than 5% of ALL Americans were chronicall ill. Does that sound like progress to you?
We can thank our illustrious food and agricultural industries that focus on everything but health for this tragedy. And our government supports this insanity because politicians depend on the money from the food and agricultural industries to stay in power. So the solution is to become educated and NOT endoctrinated as most Americans have become.
good luck to you
Question: how much vitamin c is ideal per day for consumption?
Answer: You're probably aware that the US RDA is, if memory serves, around 60mg. But RDA's are pretty meaningless in terms of optimum levels; they're usually closer to just enough to eliminate the most extreme deficiency symptoms.
I took 2-4 grams of C a day for several years. At that level it drastically reduces most illnesses like colds, flu, etc. For the last year or so I've been taking 2 grams a day, and also vitamin D, 800-1000 IU. There's been research in recent times regarding vitamin D and immunity, indicating that things we usually think of as seasonal illnesses, like colds & flu, are only seasonal because of vitamin D deficiency. Colder weather usually means less sun exposure, which of course means the body produces less vitamin D. Most people are already low on D because so many folks are scared of the sun these days.
Anyway, the upshot of all that is, C is important, but I haven't been sick since I've been taking D.
Question: Is eating a big plate full of potato & having 125 to 250 ml of Orange Juice per day, cause too much Vitamin C? A day/per day.
According to the back label of the brand of orange juice I buy, 100 ml, equals: 100 % of RDI (Recommended Daily Intake) and 40 mg for Vitamin C, whilst 200 ml of it, equals: 200% RDI and 80 mg for Vitamin C.
Is having any over intake/consumption of Vitamin C, bad for you?
Answer: absolutely not, I have had way more than that nearly every day since I was like 6, I'm more than healthy, don't worry about it, your body will excrete what it doesn't we often get much more than we need of many things, so they just pass right on through with out being used
Question: High intake of vitamin c? Can high intake of vitamin c cause over consumption health problems. If yes what kind of isymptoms to look for
Answer: Not really. Excess vitamin C gets excreted. The most the body can use at one time is about 250 mg so any more than that is a waste. For the average couch potato this is more than enough, but for active people, especially elite athletes, taking 250 mg several times a day has been shown to optimize health.
Question: What are the negative side effects if I consume too much of the Vitamins? (A, B, C, D, etc.) ? For example, I know excess Vitamin C is expelled, but I've heard the over consumption of other vitamins are harmful. Furthermore, what's the maximum number of IU's a male should take of Vitamin A per day? I consumed approximately 40,000 IU's of Vitamin A today? Can doing that over a long period of time be harmful? Thanks in advanced.
Answer: Certain vitamins are used very slowly by the body, so the body stores away the vitamins in the liver. The vitamins stored in the liver are very harmful if you take too much. Vitamin E, A, and D are a few vitamins you should not abuse.
The human body only needs between 100-300 milligrams of vitamin E daily. If over-consumed one could suffer from blood clots and fatigue.
If you consume too much vitamin A, you could cause fatigue or even worse, cirrhosis of the liver. Other symptoms are headaches, joint pain, nerve damage, loss of appetite, and vomiting. Adult males only require 900 micrograms of vitamin A daily. (I believe that 900 micrograms is equal to 36,000 IU's, so you are taking a little too much).
Too much vitamin D can lead to kidney damage, weak bones, excessive bleeding, and muscle weakness and damage.
All the vitamins that are water-soluble, are not dangerous if taken excessively. Whatever the body doesn't need is passed through the urine. This includes all complex B vitamins and vitamin C.
It's best to take 1 good multivitamin daily, and know all the bases are covered, rather than risking serious health problems by taking too much of 1 kind.
Question: Glutathione + Vitamin C.. Skin whitening...? Hi,
I read an answer given by someone here on yahoo that, its good to take glutathione pills with vitamin C to maximize its effect of skin whitening. Im planning to get 500 mg glutathione pills and take one tablet daily. But, is mere consumption of fruits containing vitamin c with gluathione pills will do the task for me?? Im already taking multi-vitamins everyday and its dose also contain 60mg of vitamin c along with other vitamins... do i still have to take more vitamin c pills?? or wht should be the dosage??
I like to avoid taking pills as much as i can.. pls help..
thanks..
Answer: Glutathione sold on the store shelves is mostly excreted out of your body and ends up not giving your body the intended effects. The molecule itself is too big to enter the cell. I have found a product call MaxGXL. The first ingredient is vitamin C
For proper body functioning & staying healthy, Max GXL is a must. Max GXL helps your body naturally produce an adequate supply of Glutathione which protects you from harmful affects of stress & over exertion, and is critical to optimal brain function. So if you are tired, overworked, aging or having other related problems, you need MAX GXL. It's basically a Glutathione accelerator which will naturally increase your energy, detoxify your body and improve your immune system.
Max GXL is formulated to strengthen your immune system, and provide optimal health, greater energy, and enhanced athletic performance. It provides proper nutrients that develops & absorbs glutathione. Max GXL will detoxify your liver & thus help the liver to function as the main production site and storehouse for glutathione.
For more information send me an email or call me and I will send you the ingredient list.
Best Regards

Question: Would eating lots of fruits like citrus be better and perhaps healthier than taking Vitamin C supplements? Years ago I used to take a multivitamin supplement, later switching to vitamin C supplements,as part of a regular diet.. Now I just blend grapefruits or limes in a blender with sugar and water for juices. So now I do not take any more synthetic vitamins. I had heard some reports about the efficacy and even safety regarding the intake of such vitamins. As I had no health condition I cannot say for sure whether one is better than the other, anyone ? Also, responses please from those who have at some point taken or have stopped taking vitamins ( as someone working in the vitamin industry would naturally want to endorse the consumption of these tablets ).
Answer: Eating fruits is better because not only do you get your intake of vitamin c, your body also absorbs other needed antioxidents that are in the fruits. I still take a multivitamin with breakfast everyday. The danger with that is some people consume too much of vitamins with the intake of foods or both. Vitamin A, and iron among others can be damamaging. Too much C will only give you the s@@ts! (and no, i do not work in the vitamin industry)
Question: What kind of study is this (experiment or correlation)? What type of data collection was used? 1) My hypothesis is that taking vitamin C will reduce the incidence of colds. Half of my subjects are given 500MG of vitamin C each day, the other half are given a placebo (pill with no active ingredients). After 6 months I ask subjects to report the number of colds they have and the length of each cold. Results show that subjects who took the vitamin C pill had 50% fewer colds than those taking a placebo.
What kind of study is this (experiment or correlation)? What type of data collection was used (self-report, archival, observation, case study)?
2) I am interested in determining if there is a relationship between taking vitamin C and the incidence of colds. I ask 1000 people to report their daily consumption of vitamin C (if they use it and how much) and how many colds they get each year. I will then analyze the data to see if there is a relationship between vitamin C use and colds.
What kind of study is this (experiment or correlation)? What type of data collection was used (self-report, archival, observation, case study)?
Answer: 1 experiment - observation
2 correlation - case study
Question: Vitamin C + Iron Side Effects? I've found out that i have a minor iron lack into my body (Light green hand veins proved that) so i've bought some Tablets that are supposed to be dropped into a glass of Water, well after consumption i've experienced a minor drop of consciousness, is that normal for these kind of Vitamins ?
A secondary fact i'd like to ask is that during at night while i was talking a walk and drink'd some Iced tea i've had some Kidney Pain (left one) and since i'm used to drink a lot of Cola type refreshments i'm finding all these related somehow.
Could you enlighten me fellas ?
Answer: You should not self-diagnose an iron deficiency based on vein color. Go have your blood tested if you're concerned you are low in iron. Then take the appropriate amount of iron prescribed by a doctor. Vitamin C is taken with iron to aid absorption. I cannot imagine that you would pass out from that. Taking too much iron can be bad for you, and no one should take supplements of iron without the advice of a doctor. I certainly would not use that product again if I experienced symptoms like that.
Question: Which of the following nutrients requires the most frequent consumption to prevent deficiency symptoms? vitamin A
vitamin E
vitamin C
beta-carotene
Answer: vitamin C
Question: Is it ok to send vitamins (in capsules) from the Philippines to Saudi Arabia thru couriers (e.g. DHL)? -these will be for my own consumption
-vitamin C, about 500 capsules
-does the Saudi government prohibit this?
Answer: you can, as long as its a common labelled brand and clearly Vit C.. (but the jars might be subject to scrutiny and opened to check to prove they are vitamins and not drugs.. just to warn you..
but having said this.. why? we have plenty of stores here in Saudiarabia that sell vitamins... The famous GNC (General Nutrician Center) stores in all major malls sells vitamins.. and all the pharmacies sell vitamins.. even vit C you can find at a lot of major grocery stores.. Why bother shipping?
Question: About daily percentages... If I drink 2 liters of juice one day and...? one cup(250ml) means 100% vitamin C per day and I also eat fruits and vegetables, does it mean my consumption of vitamin C is, say, 1200% in that day? That means at least 12 times more than normal?
What if I eat 300g of peanuts and 50g means 100% fat, my fat consumption is 600%, only from peanuts? 6 times more?
Answer: No, vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin, which means much of it will be excreted in your urine and sweat. Getting 100% of your daily need is important, but getting more than 100% is not any more beneficial for you than getting 100%. Vitamin C does have some toxic effects, but you'd have to consume much more than you are consuming right now. Watch the sugar though.
Fat is a different story. Excess fat you consume will be stored and either converted to energy if you exercise rigorously or turned into visible fat. Note that peanuts mostly contain unsaturated fat which is better for you. Excess saturated fat is usually the stuff that makes you appear "fat".
